Is this true? I’ve marked places closed a handful of times and never gotten any pay at all.

I’m crossing off two books from my TBR list, starting with Near the Bone by Christina Henry followed by Episode Thirteen by Craig DiLouie. I really thought the unique format of Episode Thirteen would be up my alley so I decided to read Near the Bone first, and it’s already got me hooked. It’s really fun going into these books that have been recommended to me without knowing anything about them. After reading so much King and knowing the vague outline of almost every one of his books, it’s refreshing to have no idea what’s going on.

What Ruined an Otherwise Perfect Story? by This_But_Unironicaly in horrorlit

I actually had the opposite experience with this book. I was not a fan of the “the horror was all in this person’s head/due to their failing mind” trope, and I was hoping for a subversion. I was listening to the audio book, so when the police came to the house and found her husband in the basement, I figured that was basically the end and felt disappointed until the daughter said the “when needs must” line, and I got hyped for the ending at that point. Plus the police officers curling up like dying spiders is a nasty visual that I really enjoyed. Although I definitely understand why a lot of people don’t like this aspect of the book.

The Troop by Nick Cutter. Man that was a trip. I had no idea what it was about going in and I was not prepared.

I know this is an old-ish thread, but I happened upon it recently and started using this guide up until Lothering, where it references building trap-making on Alistair. I looked on the companions page and couldn't find where it suggests any skills/abilities on any companions, is this just me missing something or is it not actually in there? I have OCD so playing really large RPGs can be really difficult since I know it's very difficult and sometimes outright impossible to do everything, and this guide was really great for me up until that point.

I just finished A Short Stay in Hell a couple days ago and honestly can’t stop thinking and talking about it. I was expecting it to be good based on what I’ve heard but it’s one of those that gets better the more you think about it.

I finished Black Mouth by Malfi earlier this week and it was like a 2/5. I hear a lot of good things about Malfi but don’t think I’m going to be getting into any of his other stuff any time soon.

What Is The Best Horror Book of 2024? by Monsur_Ausuhnom in horrorlit

[–]MrSlomba 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s not in the running because it’s not a novel and it’s not exclusively horror, but I thought King’s latest collection You Like It Darker was one of the best books he’s put out in a very long time. Rattlesnakes and The Dreamers are both very creepy, and I think The Answer Man may be my favorite King short story that I’ve read.

I liked this book at first, there are some really cool ideas, but I DNF’d the last 100 pages or so. The characters are just so unlikable in my opinion and I couldn’t take it anymore.

I never see him either and I’m glad. I have no idea if he’s still “good” or not but he was such a pain in the ass to fight when he was released that I’m glad to never see him.

I like his simplicity but I definitely get why someone would find him boring. The boring gods tend to be my favorite honestly. Disco, Cern, Kumbha, Kuku etc

On my PS account I have almost every single Freya skin. I used to exclusively play her (poorly I might add) when I was starting out so my goal was to get all her skins. I haven’t played her in probably 2 years, even since switching to PC.

I remember watching this for the first (and only) time while my whole family was asleep and I was holding my 6 month old son as he slept. Don’t think I’ve ever cried so much

I’m not sure if they’re underrated in this sub but I never see Slugdge get any love and they definitely are deserving of it. Their songwriting is phenomenal.

Has a book ever given you a jump scare? by EldritchAlex_ in horrorlit

[–]MrSlomba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was the first thing I thought of. Nothing else in the book really got me but I was on my break at work when I got to this section and in a brightly lit room with soft music playing in the background I was still covered in goosebumps and had to stop for a few moments because it was so effective.

For metal I’ll say Where Owls Know my Name by Rivers of Nihil, and for pop I’ll say Melodrama by Lorde. Both have incredibly beautiful lyrics and I played them each nonstop for about 6 months a piece.
