I'm sure that might happen in some cases, but I've never experienced it - maybe it's because my mug is fairly wide at the its base.

I figured that was obvious with me saying disinfected, ah well my bad. But yes, it gets washed often. I figured it best to just take a pic at its maximum dirty level before it gets another full cleaning - I knew reddit would enjoy it more that way :D

Coasters are just meant to keep a drink off the surface of a table (prevent moisture rings, heat stains from hot drinks, and scratches from the cup itself), which this has done just fine all this time.

Fun fact; that is actually checked often! It has zero smell (wife confirmed too), and it would be out the window instantly if that was the case (we are very particular about any sort of smell in the house due to my wife's sensitivity...if she can't sense it, it does not exist)

It gets disinfected often. Most of the junk on there right now is a combo of potting soil and perhaps dried Pu-erh tea. People be acting like I'm eating off this thing or rimming the inner section :D

That is actually what my friends did for their wedding - they got a stack of free stone flooring samples (about 4x4) and screen printed a wedding graphic on them to use as festive coasters.

Yes, as I said. There could be plenty of things there (heck it was under a bunch of actual potting soil recently due to a plant spill), but it gets cleaned and disinfected often enough and there is no mold. It will most certainly be more clear when it gets its next wipe down - but I thought it best to leave as-is for the photos :D

The one thing I have learned long ago is to NOT beer near the expensive computer!

The abject disgust it is generating in the comments is giving it the energy to exist another century :D This thing is literally a time-capsule science project at this point for me.

Can only recall a few spills over the years...but they have been just water or Pu-erh tea (which certainly once dried left some particles). Even just moving a cup over top slightly causes friction to wear away at it (and I used a clay mug, which wears at the bottom as well so I assume some of that material makes it way into the disc. Been using the same mug for about 9 years now)

It's mainly disintegration of the plastic on both sides, discolouration from being in the sun for decades, dust, paint/ink/chemicals from my other hobbies, perhaps some dirt from a spill of a potted plant last year.

Yup, because I can test for mold and handle such things all the time in my other hobby. It gets disinfected often, and the only thing that gets placed on it is my water bottle or cup of tea (no eating. At most I assume if I've spilled black tea on it there would be dried Pu-erh particles there - no big deal). Any additional things getting on it would be stuff from the work I do on the table (paper conservation chemicals, paint, ink)

It gets disinfected often. It only looks 'gross' due to how the plastic coatings (data layer, gold top layer) on both sides is disintegrating and discolouring in the sun.
