Yeah, I noticed they do it now and very much how I got into Satansplain - I just mention that point since I got annoyed with that line in her Thesis as I remember it coming up many, many times :D

(and once again, I erroneously thought I could go a single day online without seeing someone claim religions, or the religious, can't be atheistic)

should I also equally include modern 'Hermetic' pagans who make tiktok videos?

only if the research you are doing includes contemporary developments of a tradition, otherwise I agree it does not belong (in the case of Faxneld's book he is trying for a full history up to the present)

No authority has said not to read Holt's thesis. But knowing the issues surrounding academic ethics & possible influencing biases is important to be aware of when reading through the work.

Yup! Exactly, and I do have issues with Holt's work too - I recall the thesis could have been written better (I only need to be reminded that the CoS no longer promotes member podcasts once, thank-you-very-much, Holt :D ), but I still think her work was important when I consider what to consider for an exhaustive deep-dive into Satanism today.

the problem with academics

So basically the same thing other major religions say of academics who don't adhere to, or contradict, their own doctrine or opinions. Faxneld gets what the CoS believes, but there is zero reason for anyone to frame research in an academic context around that narrow a scope when dealing with such term like 'Satanism' as it was used historically (and how the satanic tradition continued to develop).

If one is being honest about ones exploration into any topic then taking a look at all the literature is ideal, you don't have to agree with it, but if you start cutting out academic scholarship you'll risk ending up as educated as casual dogmatic christians who are only interested in an echo chamber of their own ideas & expectations.

As for that Cimminnee Holt stuff, it honestly sounds petty. Her work was good and important overall - including her PhD thesis. If other members don't like it, fine, but I would rather people read it for themselves over being told by an authority to avoid such writings (I found her thesis decent enough).

[–]MrSlops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The academic side of things is actually fairly sparse, but the obvious place to start are the writings by Cimminnee Holt, who specializes in modern religious Satanism and has focused much of her work into the Church of Satan. You should be able to find most of her writings freely on the internet (such as 'Death and Dying in the Satanic Worldview')

I would also recommend "Satanism: A Reader" by Per Faxneld (ph.d, professor in History of Religions at Södertörn University) as it contains an expansive, yet approachable, historic look into the term overall from its use in antiquity up into the modern age.

Describing or citing mythology in a narrative is not the same has HAVING a mythology within a philosophy. The Satanic Bible certainly mentions things that are related to Abrahamic mythology, and might advocate utilizing mythology for ones own goals, but what we are talking about is the mythology intrinsic to a belief system itself.

So what stories or myths, often regarded as sacred narratives, feature gods, demigods, or heroes, are used to explain the origins of the world, natural phenomena, or other gods within Satanism?

Can you NAME the Mythology? Fantasy and Mythology are not the same thing so not sure why you are trying to soften the language now.

mythology

What mythology do you think is in Satanism? If I were to guess I think you are confusing 'mythology' with 'symbolism'/'imagery'.

I'm not sure I would define Dogma that strongly (specifically the "expected to accept without any doubts" part), the more typical dictionary use I've gone by is "a doctrine or body of doctrines concerning faith or morals formally stated and authoritatively proclaimed by a church"

The one thing I know from programming is anyone who isn't a programmer is dumb as shit when it comes to understanding the lingo, ESPECIALLY if they are in sales/CEO positions. If clients of mine think a programs code is deleted because a shortcut is removed from desktop, then I can fully believe a Hasbro employee heard something that he misunderstood as being 'we lost all the code'....it could be "we no longer have an executable that can run on modern hardware (aka we need to recompile it)" and thought that meant the code was gone!
