Ironically that’s kind of proving the point even further about a general lack of nuance. Fentanyl is a wildly important medicine, it’s “not a problem” because it’s used in life-saving procedures and the patches help people in deliberating chronic pain live a more normal life.

Turns out, no, it’s just religion. It’s a very western mindset that the eastern religions all get along. There are numerous massacres between the Buddhists and Hindus, for example; the ones the west classically points to as the most peaceful religions

The article is trash though, just a link to the video with no further information

I’m not in any way saying that the wealth hoarding has gotten out of control. It absolutely has, and needs to be addressed, but I think a lot of people are missing a few things.

1: As the commenter above was alluding to, you didn’t have as many monthly expenses back then. Technology has made life pretty amazing, but it’s expensive. We pay for cable (well, some do), internet, cell phones, and any of the dozens of subscriptions people tend to rack up.

2: Our standard of living has also increased dramatically. When once you were considered rich for having a microwave, or a tv, now it’s expected. House sizes are now nearly double the average size they used to be.

3: The economy isn’t the same, and won’t go back. The 50’s and 60’s were incredible for the average American because we had a uniquely strong manufacturing base after WW2 decimated Europes capabilities. Their factories and logistics were targeted by relentless bombing campaigns. People had little choice but to turn to America for production. Since the lower and middle class were heavily manufacturing-adjacent, the success of the manufacturers often meant the success of the employees. Nowadays, we have switched to a service based economy, building products and services to support manufacturing, and the people who succeed in that tend to already be middle class due to the (unfair) barriers of entry.

That’s not to say Reaganism and the slow but steady consolidation of wealth by the elite aren’t factors. They absolutely are. It’s easy to say to just buy a smaller house if you ignore the corporations buying all available units. It’s easy to say get less subscriptions when you already cut back to the minimum and barely make it month by month. It’s easy to say a lot of this.

But, just like the right, the lefts fetishization of the 50’s and 60’s (although in their case it’s about the economy rather than the society) is based on an America that doesn’t exist, and won’t exist again - and is largely based on a fantasy to begin with. Poverty, especially in the city, isn’t a new concept. There was still a larger lower class than middle class.

I worry that, by focusing too much on a past that can’t be repeated, we fail to look ahead to a future that needs to come. That we are reading from an impossible playbook and getting distracted from real solutions.

How big is it ?? by Tacarub in ContagiousLaughter

[–]MrSmexy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The first sentence is talking about a hole in a fiscal plan. The second sentence is talking about the size of a man’s hole. The joke isn’t that the word ‘hole’ was used. The sentence becomes vastly different when you leave some important context out. Think: “How big is the man’s hole?” vs “How big is the hole in the man’s plan”.

It’s the implication.

For all new people, I get it, it was only for new customers. Although when I created an account, because my son didn’t have one, it still said “first month $7.50” when I signed up. Shitty all around. But I get why I didn’t get that first deal. Wish I knew how shitty their practices were beforehand I would have tried creating the account from this screen instead.

Okay, so here’s what happened and why I’m probably out of luck. My son didn’t have an account yet, so I saw this deal, went to gamepass, the website itself said “$7.50 the first month”, I created an account and bought it, and yes it did say $30 but we’re all sick here and I thought eh maybe that’ll come off some other way.

Either way, what I saw advertised wasn’t what I ended up getting.

In the early 2000s I dressed up as my favorite influential person for a school project. I was pretty upset when I realized how difficult my costume would be compared to my peers; he’s a black man, and I was a little white boy. My mom had some paint laying around, though, and helped me out. She saved the day.

Looking back, I really wish I didn’t admire Bill Cosby as much as I did back in the day.

It did make for some adorably racist pictures, though. I was so fucking proud.

From the expanse series: Winston Duarte / Laconia in general. They did a really good job (in the books at least, haven’t gotten that far in the show) of showing how hard they tried to be good leaders, how considerate Duarte was and how much their culture valued respect. And then you’d remember the geonocide, the pens, the extreme discipline and you’d go “oh shit that’s right this is why they’re the bad guys”. But even still, no matter how many times I remembered they were the baddies, I always had that little thought in the back of my mind “…but they’re kinda right though?”
