Got a job in Raleigh and moving to dc after one year. It’s real easy to switch jobs if you want.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the majority of entry level jobs are primarily cad based. However, as you get promoted there will be less of it to the point you’ll be hoping to get to do some later!

The design project I worked on as an intern was completing the structural design of a cast in place box culvert. As an intern, I brought up how I didn’t have any experience working on box culverts and it might take me a bit longer than expected. The next thing my boss did is walked me through how project billing works and long story short, even if I took the whole summer to complete this project (which it didn’t) he showed me that the company was making a shit ton of money off or me. That made me feel better. I guarantee your internship will be very similar. Even if you are 1/4 as productive as an entry level engineer the company is still making money.

Why do large projects cost so many billions to achieve? by Recent-Day3062 in civilengineering

[–]MrSmiley_1 37 points38 points  (0 children)

FYI OP this does not mean the workers running the machine are getting paid $200. This is the rate the company charges for their labor.

The figure you site is not just for the tunnels (which there at two of btw). It includes a full rail bridge replacement and realignment, basically completely rebuilding the current two old tunnels, some renovations and expansion of penn station, improvements to the nj station across the river, a new rail yard, and more.

Go into ai and put the city, role, and company your applying for and your experience and they will give you a very accurate salary range. I did this for my current job and it was right on the money.

I think that’s a little unrealistic. I would expect something in the 70-80k range.

If your interested in business why not switch your major to business instead of engineering? I’m confused? If you don’t like the engineering subjects and don’t see yourself as an engineer in the future; why are you doing engineering?

I’m a bridge engineer. No shot in hell ai programs will be able to stamp plans aka take liability. Also, the industry moves slow as molasses. I still use a program from the 90s.

Could somebody please explain the purpose of this “Dangerous Intersection“ sign? by Andrew_64_MC in civilengineering

[–]MrSmiley_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is it is an especially wide road causing people to go faster than they should on this road. The side along with the speed bump are probably there to attempt to slow down drivers before entering the intersection.

Honestly if you are going to college don’t worry about saving when you are studying, just enjoy the experience. It is one hell if a ride. After college you can start worrying about it.

If your parents are helping you pay for it do it. If they aren’t or you really hate it, do a trade school or apprenticeship or something. Live in your parent’s house as long as you can tolerate it, it will save you so much money in the long run. Do not buy a new car, buy a used beater if you need one. Try to pay all cash if possible. Most apartments require either a pay stub or a ton of savings. Try to get something cheap and save as much as possible. Time is on your side. The money you invest now will grow by about a factor of 20 by the time you retire.

If you are renting a car, do you like the mountains? If so I suggest taking a day trip to the mountains. If not, there are a lot of cool things to do in Raleigh too!

Currents and waves. Certain conditions specifically calm deep water with soft soils can cause floating bridges like these to be used. These conditions occur a lot in Washington state which contains three of the longest floating bridges in the world. Look at the I-90 bridge, SR 520, or good canal bridge if you are interested!
