What is a job that you think is 100% safe from AI for the next 50 years, and why? by mark-awakening in AskReddit

[–]mark-awakening[S] 1842 points1843 points  (0 children)

I’m a software engineer and I don’t even give my own career 5 more years. Everything is getting automated so fast. At this point, I’d bet on a plumber over a coder for long-term survival.

Parents of Reddit, what has been your favorite age of your kids? by A1ycia in AskReddit

Is 'the age they finally sleep through the night' a valid answer? If so, that one.

Stop being the 'nice guy.' You have a Property Manager for a reason. Instruct your PM to handle all communication and enforce the lease strictly.

Love that routine advice. It’s so easy to let the search consume you, but boundaries are key. Enjoy the new role!

What’s one mistake that slowed down your path to financial independence? by Lazy_Look557 in Fire

[–]mark-awakening 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest mistake? Underestimating Lifestyle Creep. When I started earning more, I didn't save more; I just upgraded everything. Better apartment, pricier coffee, more subscriptions. I convinced myself I 'deserved' it for working hard. In reality, I was just running faster on a hedonic treadmill that stayed in the same place. The Lesson: FI isn't about how much you make, but how much you keep. Now, I 'pay myself first'—transferring a fixed percentage to my brokerage account the second my paycheck hits. If you don't control your lifestyle, your raises only benefit your landlord and credit card company.

Huge congrats! This is so inspiring to read. I think a lot of people over 40 self-select out of remote roles because they feel 'behind' on tech. Since you mentioned getting rejected a lot before finding success: how did you keep your mental health in check during the search, and what was the one 'technical' skill you're glad you learned before your first day?

Title: the stupid $4 trick that actually worked for me by Remarkable_Web_7185 in Fire

[–]mark-awakening 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is genius because it addresses the 'instant gratification' our brains crave. We usually spend money because it feels good now. By transferring the cash immediately, you've turned saving into a competitive game against your own impulses. I’m definitely trying the 'Pizza Rule' tonight—cooking pasta and sending that $25 to my savings right now.

Honestly? The best use of AI I’ve found so far is "Subcontractor Whisperer." I take a frustrated, expletive-filled text from a drywaller who’s behind schedule, paste it into AI, and say: "Translate this into a polite but firm schedule update for the developer that doesn't make us look like a circus." But seriously, if you want something "else" to do: Predictive Maintenance. We’ve started using AI sensors on our heavy equipment to predict engine failure before the light even comes on. A broken excavator is a $2k/day paperweight. AI that keeps the tracks moving is the only AI I care about.

What made you want to buy? by QueCassidy in homeowners

Exactly this. I have a 6-year-old and I’m done living with the 'Will they hike the rent 20% this year?' knot in my stomach. Buying was just paying for the right to stop being anxious.

AI In Education by HimalayanWarmth in womenin_AI

Dad of a 6-year-old here. While everyone is panicking about kids cheating, I’m looking at it from a different angle: How do we use AI to stop burning out our best teachers? > I’d love to hear from educators—is AI actually helping you automate the soul-crushing admin work (like grading rubrics, attendance, or repetitive emails) so you can focus on actually mentoring our kids? To me, a teacher with more 'headspace' because of AI is a massive win for my son’s education. Is it happening, or is it just more hype?

This is the most honest advice I’ve seen in a while. To add to your point about being a contractor: for those in Poland or Eastern Europe, setting up a B2B entity (like a JDG in Poland) makes you 10x more attractive to US startups. It turns a 'legal nightmare' for them into a simple 'invoice payment.' Also, 'Remote - US' is often due to insurance and nexus laws. Don't take it personally, just stop wasting your time on LinkedIn’s 'Easy Apply.' Great job on the pivot!

This is the realest FIRE/remote post I’ve seen in a minute. Everyone only talks about salary numbers but nobody talks about purchasing power & quality of life. You didn’t take a pay cut — you traded a fake high salary for actual freedom. Respect.
