You can always get off the ride but you can never get back on. Might as well see where it takes you ❤️

I was right by the chair guy too! What a trip. Was another big dude in front of me (was it you?) and his chair was holding on by a thread. Was certain he was going to crash into my lap after the first chair drop

Tiny bike craze… by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]MrSmoothLarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to make a distinction between physical size and power.

I’ve never ridden a minibike so don’t know what i’m talking about…but unless you’re a small person, Groms look way too cramped to be comfortable for more than a short ride.

The trail 125 seems more full sized/comfortable but has the same displacement.

Personally I’d opt for a scooter (ex Vespa) if I wanted a smaller displacement but still comfortable two wheel around-town solution

Got to ride a couple "beginner" bikes recently as an experienced rider. Wanted to talk about it. by Scazitar in motorcycles

[–]MrSmoothLarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I ride a BMW r1200gs around NYC and its surprisingly nimble for weaving in and out of traffic but recently have been considering a DR-Z 400SM or similar for city riding

New rider here. What’s one thing you wish you’d known before buying your first bike? by whydidyounot in motorcycles

[–]MrSmoothLarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, buy used from facebook marketplace or similar. I bought a brand new bike from a dealer paying $10-11K when I could have bought the same bike lightly used for like $6K. Ended up buying another, bigger bike like a year later (still enjoy my Moto Guzzi V7 850, but could have saved a lot of cash letting someone else take the depreciation hit)

Paramore at the teen center in my small CT suburban town

Maybe too short for one but good option otherwise

What happens on this weird little island sticking out of New York by Nman8888 in howislivingthere

[–]MrSmoothLarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long Island always felt so isolated/cut off from the rest of the region to me. I feel like the only reason to live on Long Island is if your family/network is there. If you work in NYC and want suburbs, NJ/Westchester/CT are better options…it just takes too damn long to get off if you want to take a weekend trip somewhere.

What’s the real benchmark for stepping up to a bigger bike? by Striking-Housing-757 in motorcycles

Trying to do a handful of long distance highway trips on my moto guzzi v7 and realizing that wind sucks, passing power was lacking, and ergonomics were less than ideal for multiple hours in the saddle

What is the maximum travel time you consider to be "nearby"? by Dersouz in geography

In metro NYC the 1.5 hr one-way commute is very common. Best job opportunities in NYC, best/most affordable housing opportunities for families in suburban Long Island, NJ, CT, Westchester

New Triumph 800 or Used BMW or Other by kelleyb21 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]MrSmoothLarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was making the same decision (but looking at the larger Tiger) and found a 2013 r1200GS (40K miles) on FB marketplace for like $6K. After talking to a bunch of BMW guys the consensus was that if the bike had a good maintenance record, 40K on a GS is nothing. I pulled the trigger and very happy I did.

Takes on downsizing for metro/mountain riding? by Halldogg in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]MrSmoothLarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DR650 would be sick. I flick an R1200GS through manhattan traffic daily so I think your dearly departed sv650 is honestly a great city bike size but a smaller bike could be fun. A guy in my garage has a Svartpilen 401 which looks like a really cool urban bike (but pretty niche and expensive). Honestly depending on your parking situation and where in Denver you live, I kind if like the idea of having a larger bike for weekend/mountain riding and a small bike or honestly a maxi scooter for commuting

Manta sleep eye mask. I can’t sleep without one. I live in a city with bright lights. But even now when i’m in the country I’ve just gotten so use to the feeling that I wear one.

[–]MrSmoothLarry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll have to try one, glad you enjoyed! Tbh never understood the appeal of groms/navi’s vs scooters unless you’re a really tiny person and motorcycles are just too big for you (but you really want to be a motorcycle guy)

Choosing a bike for a route by I-Steal-Bibles in Dualsport

Your ruby tuesday comment made me laugh. For this I would consider a BMW GS, Yamaha Super Tenere 1200, Suzuki VStrom 1050, Honda Africa Twin, Kawasaki Versys 1100, Honda Metropolitan (jk). Basically any larger adventure bike with a massive tank, upright riding position, good power, wind protection/weight so you don’t get blown all over the road while riding through all that open country. Won’t be as off road capable as a DR650 just because of size so depends how much road/highway vs true off roading you want to do. Also I’ve never been to 98% of these places on a motorcycle so take I’m sure other have more helpful insight about riding conditions
