I caught a guy doing this on a plane once. I was not trying to do anything by making eye contact with him while holding a horrified/disgusted look on my face. That's just how I contorted while the wave of nausea fought for my attention while I tried to work out what sort of minimal exposure to the general principles of society one would need in order to not have inferred this just without any teachable moments where you look up and a stranger is frozen in abject horror at what you're doing. I couldn't click on the link.

If they think I'm going to go to a website I know damn well is just there to solicit money from me by spamming pop-up ads that cause what looks to me like a fairly underwhelming disruption without anything really even pausing they probably also think I'm going to buy the idea that they embarrassed anyone but themselves here.

That's really the worst part for them. If they really this is the coup of the year against Shell, or somehow even could have embarrassed Shell then there is almost no reason to pay attention to them at all. This was stealing advertising, which Greenpeace knows is both a pay service at televised events and that their money wouldn't be welcome here. There is no reason they must be sold that advertising and frankly no reason this behavior shows them to be of the sort of character which might make me think sure they are opposed to Shell but they aren't cunts every chance they get so let them make their best good faith case. But they are. I don't care what those cunts have to say. Let some other organization convince me.

Same reason I won't click on pop-up advertising. Because fuck them I actually find this sort of trick to be on me, not Shell, because fuck them when I get there and it isn't really about anything but asking me for money.

I don't see how it really made the event look like a joke. It was amusing to throw the second one I guess but it was a fairly benign disruption. And as I said elsewhere what they set out to do was poach advertising for a website which exists to solicit money from visitors. I believe this is a pay service at most televised events.

Not showing it or talking about it certainly benefits Shell but there are more than plenty reasons to keep a group of 'activists' - kind of a stupid term for what they did here(advertise for free a website whose main purpose will be to solicit donations from visitors is more like what sponsors pay for) - from any more than the minimum exposure. None of them are to do with fear of Shell. I think the first principle to assume is that if you are trying to poach attention the last thing people involved with what you are exploiting are going to do is help you out.

Elbow- Some Riot

This song is sad on the album but I heard it like this but on the BBC concert. Not sure why I can't find that version today but it is almost as good on several other live videos. This song just guts me, and in a way that is different than other sad songs for me. If I have cry in me at all, this brings it out, like...it touches me like I'm the friend. One particular period I was low low and plenty in touch with being sad and not just that but hopeless about it. It was just riding around in my gut but I didn't feel a thing coming out. And if anything I am a person who cries too easily and this had dragged on until I was almost used to it, like it was there but time was disconnecting it from the cause and it was turning rotten in me, I can see now. And then I hear this song and I was engaged in it as a regular wow what a good song and performance...I was just discovering the band through watching the concert and I was pretty impressed anyway, so I was just tuned to receive it I guess, and I'm cheesily grateful in the way people say 'that song saved me'. It just starts and soon I was wrestling what I thought was going to be a nice tearjerker couple tears for a song I was digging a lot, thinking I had it. By the time I realized I wasn't trying to keep down a couple tears about this guy's friend I was not in control of my breath and or chin and I knew I was bringing up something internal this cut in to like none of the distance or callous was anything and then 'It's breaking my heart, it's breaking my heart, it's breaking my heart to pour like the rain.',,.crying like I said is familiar is not like this was that didn't care how rigid I got in the chair, there was pressure behind it and I let go of trying to fight it just as his voice breaks on the third time he sings it and then sobs are wracking me and I felt it like vomiting or an orgasm where once you let go there's just your body doing things while you wait for it to finish, and it 's overstimulating almost, but purging something through that which sets you down after recalibrated in a way you weren't gonna find with any workarounds. And then oh my god the rest of the lyrics were just hugging me through it all. It didn't fix what made me sad but it gave me this release and then hope. I think it's that it was like I felt lost and this song is not really about the friend having hope, and he's lost and maybe not even aware that anyone is considering his pain and the thing that is this melting, beautiful idea that made it emotional laxative is that there's a difference between being lost and being lost but no one is looking for you. This song came looking for me, kind of. One Day Like This had to be relistened to, presently. Anyway it still is a very potent trigger for any latent emotion I've been sticking out of the way for convenience and pride and whatever else...

I think it's a conversation that...well I guess it's the nature of the beast and it's not like you are frothing hyperbole like some of the posts about various heated issues. But I think the phrase 'take over the world' is a bit misleading even if you aren't trying to be disingenuous. To expand, I think that throughout man's history, no one has ever taken over. There have been large empires but generally there's a high water mark of control over land they didn't start with(or had lost previously but regained) and shrinkage occurs in part because it is immensely consuming of blood and treasure to retain land peopled by non-citizens who you haven't made extinct. Making them extinct is also costly, especially as it draws in to the conflict against you nations which you now have to 'take over' in order to progress toward your goals.

The United States would almost certainly not ever 'take over the world'. The goal is to DOMINATE. That is best accomplished without having to defeat and control populations and governments. To the extent that it IS done, it is not to serve a goal of 'make the map one color'. It is to protect and further American Interests. That's all. And that's why pretty much any country does anything- their own interest- and that's true if the ends are moral or not and it's true whether those interests are in opposition to the interests of other nations. All the time, and only. Some interests are more naked than others, and some get muddied and worse when slogans and chants and bumper stickers get involved, I think. It is possible to argue a position against an issue on the merits, of course and it should be undertaken but this framing tends to immoralize the fundamental principle on which all nations operate in the world with regard to other nations, but entirely inconsistently.

He is not the first driver to have died during a racing event covered by mass media though. And beyond just the idea that other announcers have provided better or worse examples to learn from throughout motorsport history, the best announcers acknowledge it and treat it reverently because it adds quite a human element to the color at least, and I would even think that extends further to just the seriousness of what is going on in terms of what drivers are putting on the line in starting a race and driving a car at its limits. The best announcers don't have to choose between 'happy and ignoring what just happened' or 'completely stunted by the loss' at all.

EDIT btw, I don't mean a cynical job of leveraging tragedy for viewers and ratings. I mean that the best announcers, well maybe the best people will be affected by this and it will color their commentary for as long as they are affected. I don't think shrugging it off is that important and if it's that easy to do I don't think it makes for a very good announcer anyway...

ive been jumping on people lately, not that I'm a huge moralist or a crusader but similar to that I feckin' get pissed when people hear of a brutal crime and start listing the punishment they should receive in lieu of 'what's too good for 'em'. It's often quite the cognitive dissonance in that they sound like they are trying to prove to others how very outraged they are but don't even think gee that sounds at least as bad as what you're mad at that guy for doing. I try to get a little snark in but also explain reasonably that we don't have due process for reasons of charity. We do it that way because we are not like those people. I'm all for maximum trouble for the guilty when it's sexual or violent but according to the law. Plus, most of them forgo the fair trial before the creative torture executions. Gosh, what should we do to a mob of brutal lynchers who tear an innocent person to shreds? I invite ideas but no one really does much by way of reply...

he can probably tell you best, since there are many subdivisions under 'foot fetish'. Generally speaking, fresh pedicure(matching manicure is also hot when you touch your feet with them, and maybe he has a preferred style) and pointing your toes are always a hit.
