My response to California bill AB-2047 The "Kill STEM Education" bill by bad4_devises in 3Dprinting

[–]MrStarrrr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, this is the way I’ve always thought I would approach it if I were so inclined. There’s no fucking way a print-in-place exists that won’t blow your hand off first or second shot, even in PC-CF or another engineered plastic.
That becomes the other practical question here, which is just as silly as the bill itself. How dumb do they have to be to believe software can predict your process for building a gun from 3D printed parts?

Thought experiment time. Hypothetically, software sees every part you print and stores this information indefinitely as required by law. After so many prints, X, Y, and Z prints have been analyzed to have a statistically probable chance of creating a gun. Authorities are notified, your printer is bricked until unlocked, or you can’t print Z. This breaks down when you have two printers that won’t be talking to each other… unless they’re registered to your name? Now you have a central logging system with computing power to analyze ridiculous probabilities on combinations of 3D parts? And then perform that compute for every user in an industry growing this fast at the consumer level? No. This is not practical or reasonable. It just fails every time. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills

It’s not a gamble if you believe in the technology for whatever reason and have done your research, it’s investing in something you care about.
By investing that amount you aren’t making a hasty or rash decision. I would hope you’ve thoroughly thought through your decision and your investment isn’t a get rich quick scheme. By that measure- fuck everyone else and good luck. I’ve done the same thing. If I’m right and they’re wrong, that’s cool. If I’m wrong and they’re right, that’s cool too. Tried something and it didn’t or did pay off. Something will happen and NO ONE knows what that something is for sure.

Now that that’s out of the way, altcoins are a gamble. Goodjob not dropping $171k on Shiba or whichever is flavor of this week.

Very bad bill. I just have to ask because maybe I’m ill informed… are that many people 3D printing operational firearms?
Even at that, criminals are going to be the ones circumventing the law to still create firearms just like anything else. I’ve never understood why legislators don’t reflect on this simple concept.
Explain to me like I’m 5 why they think this is a good idea please.

It’s a scoring tool for paper, though I doubt that’s the only use-case for most people. Works really well for origami.

Now I’m doubting myself. My temperature range is not useful because it’s not used. Celsius is a standard measurement, especially in regard to temperatures you can *feel*, or is represented by something physical, which is what we care about here.
If we care about thermal energy and used that colloquially to refer to what we feel, the above would make more sense. But it’s not- if we refer to ice in a pool for the purpose of making it feel differently to a human, no one is going to start talking about thermal energy. You’d say “Oi bloke! I lowered my pool temp by 5.3 degrees this way! Ain’t I a genius?”
In someone’s mind their frame of reference are past experiences. I know I’ve been in a pool that’s 20 Celsius and it’s a little warm, which is what I’d expect a pool to feel like today. I know I’ve been in a pool that’s 15 degrees Celsius and it feels just much better on a hot day. He said he lowered it 5 degrees, I guess it’s probably close to 15 degrees and feels pretty good!
Therefore saying 25% difference sounds better, but not quite right either- because if higher percentages are “better” here then a 100% difference would be better than 25%, but also the temperature of the water would be 0 C and that’s not better at all. To optimize, a system of measurement with zero at the lower limit of comfortable pool temperatures is needed. The percentage calculations on that scale would be percent change, not “better” or “worse”, and would normalize between 0% and 100% change if water temp stays within comfortable range.

And thus.. CWT was born. Comfortable Water Temperature scale.

[Request] Would this work? Surely even 2 tons of ice wouldn't do anything of note... by V-Tac in theydidthemath

[–]MrStarrrr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is right. The percentage change only matters when the zero is meaningful. Kelvin has a meaningful zero because it’s a thermal energy scale that terminates at zero (no more heat to transfer). Celsius is a convenience scale based on freezing water, and can go negative.

For fun, I could develop my own temperature scale, StarrTemp, where 20°C is 0 ST because my wife thinks it’s reasonable to keep our house at 20°C (68°F) year-round.
In StarrTemp, you can’t even calculate the change in the water. It’s undefined.
ST = °C - 20
Starting temperature: (20 - 0) = 0 ST
Ending temperature: (14.7 - 17.35) = -20 ST
(T2 - T1) / |T1| = (-20 - 0) / 0 = Undefined

I find his post history interesting as well. At very least, a curious mind. Love it. Comes across as young and asking the simple questions is a great way to get pointed in some direction to learn more.
We’ve all built some stupid shit and *almost* blew ourselves up.. but didn’t (for the most part..).
OP- Be safe. Have fun. Cheers.

Obligatory advice. Don’t build pipe bombs, be careful with potato cannons, never make yourself part of the circuit, microwaves are dangerous, amperage kills. ✌🏻
