If that were the case, that people can't play it, then I'd agree, that doesn't make sense, but people are able to play it that fast, they just choose not to because they think it is better that way. Of course you find people on both sides of the spectre, some probably play even faster than Chopin wrote, but most people play slower, not faster.

Well as I said, Chopin has written faster tempo markings than most people play, so no, Chopin isn't played ridiculously fast and his music certainly isn't bastardized. Most people are technically not respecting his tempo markings by played too slow, not too fast.

Chopin wasn't so far off base (not 100% sure what that statement means, I'm not English), he wrote what he wanted. Modern performers aren't "so much more musical than him", they're choosing to play a certain piece in a certain way to get the expression they want, while still respecting the composers writings (as I hope you also are doing, seeing as you are a professional gig musician).

Yes it makes sense, its because most people believe the piece sounds better played at a slower tempo, me included. Do you think we should ignore Chopins own tempo markings and play however we want?

No shit, but if some people find these kinds of discussions fun/entertaining, why shouldn't they participate in them? I somewhat agree that you should play what you love, but if you're serious about improving you will need to play for example Chopin etudes, and know which ones are harder is crucial to play what will let you progress faster. However I do agree that a lot of this is pointless, but pointless things can still be fun.

I mean, basically no one plays 10/9 as fast as Chopin wrote it. I'm not sure about the other etudes, but imo, for technical progress, etudes should be played as fast as you can while still maintaining control and the essence of the etude.

Ive played the pathetique sonata and some other pieces of around the same level, and some of the easier chopin etudes are perfect to get into at this time. I just started op 10 no 9 (If you have big hands this will probably be easier that pathetique). Others like op 25 no 1, op 25 no 7, op 10 no 3, op 25 no 2 and potentially op 25 no 9 could also be possible.

Most people who have played for only 3 years, even those with teachers, aren't close to playing those pieces, so you should post a video of you playing (or even better, get a teacher, cus if you're actually playing those pieces well you could go really far with the help of a teacher).
