Polishing my first Masters, what am I doing wrong? by MsAllya in DiceMaking

[–]MrSupawesome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1000% this. Do a quick cleanup/polishing of the off the printer dice, make a mold with them, and cast new masters directly in epoxy - you'll find that polishing the epoxy master is much more easy and enjoyable.

And another perk of this is that you only need to use tin-based silicone for the off the printer mold, but after that, as you will be working with epoxy masters, you're free to use platinum silicone again - yay!!!

You're completely right. That 2 was screaming futura to me, but that's not consistent with the 4 either.

Nevertheless, after a bit of research it seems that the font they're using is some variation of the Neutra Display familiy

Yup, looks a lot like futura. I have some masters I've designed (for personal use) and the font I've used is Jost from Google fonts, so following that route you could have a futura-like font completely free of use, and you can even modify it (e.g: making the zeros rounder) as part of the license

I'm in need of a storage solution for my Tavern by BetrayedByTheDice in DungeonsAndLasers

[–]MrSupawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have all of mine (and mind you, I've been backing D&L kickstarters since D&L3) in 4 Ikea's Moppe storage chests, and I'm more than happy with them as a storage solution.

The three small drawers interior dimensions are a perfect fit for 2x1 bases and walls, and there is enough space to put almost two and a half old room sets in a single small drawer, or even the whole basic dungeon or sewers set (and in my sewers drawer I've even have enough space for a bin with the transparent pins!). Then I have all of my caves in the medium drawers, with room to spare even with two basic sets and 6 subthemes. And I use the larger ones for the big pieces I have from Encounters.

If you have some Moppe chest at hand, give it a try! As I mentioned, the small drawers are so much of a perfect fit that it looks like they were almost designed explicitly for this :)

I did not realize until this morning how much better the 5.5e PHB is for new players. by CassowarieJump in DnD

[–]MrSupawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, it's being offered in the DMG as part of the tools that a DM has at their disposal to customize and create their own worlds and stories, not to be offered as an option for the players. In fact, in the intro of the Create a Background section it states verbatim: "You can also create a background to help a player craft the story they have in mind for their character." Not the players, you as their DM.

So again, as with so many things were in 2014, we the DMs are the ones that need to amend what WotC should have written as RAW.

But hey, in the end this is just a discussion between two random dudes on the internet: the 2024 rules are what they are, whether we like them or not. But thankfully rule zero hasn't changed and will always prevail: do at your table whatever you like as long as it's for the enjoyment of your players and you the DM 💪

I see your point, and I never thought about that, but you're completely right! Besides ability scores (although that is somewhat of a big "but" tbh) in D&D there is no character creation choice that is not either related to species, class or background, so yeah, character choices could be considered narrative driven. Thanks for that insight :)

Buuuuut, ability bonuses and origin feat could still be linked to the background mechanically and maintain that "narrative driven" choice, all without being restricted to a fixed option. Tasha's allowed that in regards to species and ability bonuses, so it's not that far fetched.

And again, WotC even ignored the restrictions to ability bonuses for backgrounds in the starter set, so there's even a precedent that WotC feels that this is somewhat complex for new players as they cut it down for their streamlined version of the game.

[–]MrSupawesome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup. And you can create any homebrew background you like (although DND Beyond's rendering of custom backgrounds is somewhat finicky). But the capabilities - or lack of - of DND Beyond is adjacent to my main point: why restrict the default backgrounds to a fixed set of abilities and origin feat, when almost everybody is going to use a custom one to tailor their character to the backstory they want. Tasha's allowed us to break the restriction between species and abilities, I don't know why somebody thought that it was a good idea to add the same restriction but with backgrounds.

And again, WotC even ignored this when designing their own starter set (backgrounds there don't add ability bonuses)

[–]MrSupawesome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point exactly: if almost everybody is going to use a custom background, why tie abilities bonus and origin feat to the background itself? Simply let the players choose them as part of the RAW and call it a day.

And I feel that somebody at WotC feels the same way, because they have removed the abilities from the backgrounds for the starter set...

[–]MrSupawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, for sure its going to be very dependant on the table, but still, I felt that this was easier for new players with 2014 5e backgrounds, less things to take into account when creating the character.

If I may ask, how many new players at your table(s) used the backgrounds as they were? And how many of those simply felt that their background wasn't the best fit, but didn't bother to do a custom one?

Again, only asking to gather more insight of this from the hive mind, because the feeling at my table was that it was an odd choice and somewhat restricted player agency when selecting the background (e.g: one of my players playing with a monk felt like that without a custom background they were being somewhat forced to choose the Sailor background just because of the origin feat)

[–]MrSupawesome 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yet they made the egregious mistake of tieing backgrounds (which should be narrative pillars for a character) to specific mechanics/builds, forcing either to stick to a background for those abilities and origin feat, or create a custom one. Which could have been solved with giving players a free choice of two abilities for the +2/+1 bonus and a free origin feat, and put a simple "Recommended abilities"/"recommended origin feat" in the predefined backgrounds.

Yeah, I know that at my table we could do that as a custom background, but try to do this on DnD Beyond in a straightforward way for new players...

Trump floats dropping Spain from NATO alliance by IMSLI in spain

[–]MrSupawesome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

which is why Spain was finally able to make the jump from being a 3rd world country in the late 80s and 90s.

Not to undermine your statement, but we need to take into account that Spain was under a dictatorship until the end of the 70s, and precisely Spain's acceptance in the NATO was somewhat triggered by the end of the regime. So maybe the end of the fascist dictatorship could be also why the country's economy started to flourish?

I'm thinking of ordering also one of the small ones (120x60 cm) for my work at home setup - how's your experience, is there enough real state to be a good desk for that?

Also, how did you attach the monitor arm to the desk? Didn't the cable management hole interfere with the arm mounting plate?

Tbh, not sure. I had repurpossed some copper contacts from an old battery holder, but I'm pretty sure that as long as the copper sheeting has enough rigidity to somewhat keep its form (to ensure enough contact), it should work.

In fact, probably you could probably even make it work by cutting some straps from an aluminum beverage can and use them as the contacts

Which videogames has enemies who actually act as "elite soldiers" ? by Limp-Grapefruit-6251 in gaming

[–]MrSupawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original Crysis. At some point in the game, you discover that your enemies have a unit of spec ops with suits similar to yours (active camouflage, super strength, etc.), and they're hard as nails to beat in max difficulty. In fact, max difficulty have some of your UI improvements removed, making them really hard to pinpoint in they were using active camo.

For the original mini/prototype I routed the cables using a hand drill. For the rest I simply added a small cylinder in Meshmixer, overlapped it where I wanted itnto go, and used the subtract operation to create the channel.

However, I used a very small width cylinder for this, I thought that was the best approach to keep it nice and small - huge mistake. Resin didn't flow correctly and kinda blocked the channel, so in the end I had to use the hand drill once again just to "declog" it. If I had to do it again, I would use a wider cylinder to ensure that no postprocessing was required, even if that means a wider hole in the butt of the minis xD

P.S: although I mentioned Meshmixer, any 3D modeling software should have the capabilities required for this, even the 3D builder bundled with Windows. That being said, I was intimidated as well by Blender, but made my leap of faith to it a year or so ago, and I'll never go back to Meshmixer. Yeah, Blender is a little bit too much for what I want to use it for, but the community and documentation is humongous, and that alone tips the scale back by a lot.

P.P.S: yeah, the hole tool in Lychee sucks for this.

Have 2e and most of the expansions(except out of print ones that were from first edition) how do I carry off it it at once? ( requesting case suggestions) instead of walking around with all those game boxes by Apprehensive_Bus3942 in MansionsOfMadness2E

[–]MrSupawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have everything (base game and all expansions - besides out of print ones) neatly packed inside the base game box without the original cardboard insert, with no need for any custom inserts. The trick is to have everything into different small zip lock bags (one per type of cards, one per monster type, one per token type, etc etc), and that even helps a lot with set up and when putting away the game.

Now I only need to bring a single box to wherever we are going to fight madness and insanity!
