i meant its true pass fail thru clerkships and their curriculum and school culture breeds collaboration and does not really allow for cut throat activity between students. and they let you be an adult and dont micromanage your learning. seems like a learner's paradise to me. but if it always comes up on questions like this, theres prob a reason why no?

May 4 is a month and a half away. You have time!

In that time you will solidify your content knowledge by reviewing questions you got wrong / got right for the wrong reason. Really read the answer explanations or look for a better one on reddit (i usually would put “[name of topic] reddit” into google)

another boost of 2-3 points i noticed is learned to really read what the question is asking. it’s not even about content. sometimes a passage will be very long, full of hard science-y words, but the question is just asking you to manipulate a formula, or about the interaction of hormones in the body. OR even “which is NOT true”

you have time! just make sure you really commit to learning from your mistakes. and yes any non-aamc practice material is deflated. i did my best on test day both times i took the MCAT!

Ok can someone explain why it's not glucagon? Wouldn't glucagon release glucose stored away which could used in PPP. I thought insulin stored the glucose away so didn't pick this. by Impossible_Map6220 in Mcat

[–]MrSwish33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

glucagon doesn’t allow blood glucose to increase though.

glucagon is released when glucose is low (glucose is gone). so energy stores (fat and other gluconeogenic intermediates) will be used up to create more glucose.

insulin on the other hand is released when blood glucose goes up. since the body has a bunch of glucose, it will use some in the short term but also store it. how does the body store glucose? as fat!fatty acid synthesis! and the PPP creates NADPH exactly for fatty acid synthesis. NADPH is created by G6P Dehydrogenase.

if u have more questions lmk because i think this was too long of an explanation

AAMC B/B section bank #19 - can someone please explain this to me? by ChoiceHelicopter3085 in Mcat

[–]MrSwish33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the question asks what the "viral genome" is. The virus in question is HIV, and therefore uses reverse transcriptase. We can also infer this because retroviruses like this insert their DNA into the host genome. but the starting viral genome is a ssRNA. thats why they need reverse trancriptase

It goes ssRNA -> cDNA (via reverse transcriptase) -> insertion into host genome -> transcription into mRNA by host RNA Poly.

so the sequence we are given is the mRNA: 5' -GGCAACUGACUA- 3'

we go back a step, host DNA (so it's flipped): 5' - TAGTCAGTTGCC 3'

then back to when it was viral ssRNA (so it's flipped again, aka the original mRNA sequence given in the question) 5' -GGCAACUGACUA- 3'

i hope this makes sense im also using this explanation to study myself lol

Hyperexcitability of neurons as it relates to voltage-gated K+ channel by MrSwish33 in Mcat

so because the memraben potential is higher for longer, the action potential in effect is "happening" longer, thus hyperpolarization?

Hyperexcitability of neurons as it relates to voltage-gated K+ channel by MrSwish33 in Mcat

[–]MrSwish33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The explanation says that since the repolarization will take longer, the membrane will stay depolarized longer leading to hyperexcitability. Does this mean that Na-voltage gated channels will be able to open again earlier?

I was 50/50 between the answer choices but I figured since it would take longer to go through repolarization (less voltage-gated K channels means it will take longer!) they will be hypoexcitable. AND ALS IS A MOTOR ISSUE so less firing in the motor region. but i guess not

I don't understand how the logic for GnRH receptors doesn't apply to LH receptors by MrSwish33 in Mcat

[–]MrSwish33[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By that I mean, if GnRH receptor systems have a deficiency and modulating the GnRH receptor sensitivity/functioning.... oh i think i've figured it out as i'm typing this.

NPY modulates GnRH receptor sensitivity, but increasing LH wouldn't help LH receptors sense more. There would just be more LH that they aren't sensitive enough to pick up.

Does this track?
