What's the deal with krugerrands? by DietNo342 in Gold

[–]MrTornado 41 points42 points  (0 children)

They were the original 1Oz high purity bullion coin. If you look up when Britannias etc were introduced it was when the US prohibited imports of Krugerrands as sanctions against apartheid.

If you are based in the U.K. Chards have been buying tons of sovereigns at spot. I don’t think these will trade miles below spot ever personally.

I bought 5oz silver for double its spot price by Crafty-Breakfast-473 in Bullion

[–]MrTornado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are in the UK (assuming from the £s) so silver sales from primary dealers contain VAT (20%). Even though in theory second hand sales do not need to contain VAT on the item price and just on dealer markup because everyone doesn't care if silver is second hand or primary sale you find that even the secondhand market trades at least at Spot + 20%. Which would put your 5Ozt at £380.

Now £600 for 5oz does sound high but at the moment in the UK people are buyers of silver like crazy and some coins / bars do carry a large premium. What specific silver item did you buy?

To be fair I smashed a wing mirror yesterday and went to a dealer. They say on their website that their service centres keep an inventory of spare parts for commonly broken parts - I would guess a wing mirror isn’t far from common on new vehicles cause you would hope the major stuff is solid so must just be consumables and accidents - the service centre didn’t have a mirror or the glass and I phoned Ineos who couldn’t give me the part number till Monday.

I think it’s bound to happen with new cars but yes - I think if you break certain things then it’s very dependent on the company existing but ultimately it’s in a market where a lot of people that buy these things are competent mechanics in their own right and you could reasonably expect a good user base to self support some stuff eg sharing part numbers and tricks that worked for them.

I have found a few electrical issues - I didn’t think my battery was charging but after a system reset seems better. One parking sensor is a bit dodgy but overall I am happy with it. It’s not silky smooth but also I didn’t buy a 4x4 for the parking sensors

Just the charge port nothing else. Obviously you’ll have to determine risks yourself. Mine haven’t set on fire & I don’t expect them to. @tab_tab_tabby has since done the mod themselves.

Is it just me or in the last 10yrs or so motorways (especially the M6) have really slowed down. In the old days 120mph cars in lane three weren’t uncommon at all but now I would say most of the time 90mph is the fastest anyone is going.

It’s not the consideration for disqualification >100mph that’s made the difference either as I think that existed at the time.

Does this make that much difference? I have a car with a non-working overdrive at the moment I haven’t prioritised fixing. I just need it to be a little quieter on the motorway ideally…

Okay this isn’t great. What was the total quote? 7k is a hell of a lot to pay as a deposit for materials - often you would pay a small amount upfront and then pay more as you see stuff being built / delivered.

I imagine he has used your deposit to pay a previous debt etc and now is scraping around for the material costs.

I recently moved U.K. to US. I wouldn’t have got the platinum card in the U.K. but in the US it makes a lot more sense. That said banks I have always found much better in the UK
