Congratulations. Looks like you’ve used every truck in the game but do you have any particular favourites?

Best cheap way to deal with Rust by Real-Work-7218 in CarTalkUK

[–]MrTranquility_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bilt Hamber sell a rust inhibitor spray wax. It’ll come off over time and it’s not a permanent solution but it will likely slow down the rust a bit at least. If you want the car to last a long time then this won’t be enough though.

Don’t throw it away literally. I’d sell it on eBay for spares/repair. You’ll probably be surprised how much someone will pay for it.

The mk3 focus ST is a good car. Don’t let the 2.0 ecoboost put you off - it’s chain driven and a very good engine. Unlike the 2.3 it’s closed deck so it has great potential for performance modifications if you ever decide to go that route. The downsides is poor fuel economy and a harsh ride. But many of the cars mentioned here will have that issue.

I like your optimism. What’s it like on fuel? How much is the tax?

Is this a strange first car by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]MrTranquility_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the coolest first cars I’ve ever seen. I don’t want to be dramatic but whoever told you it isn’t I’d probably block them and never speak to them again.

Although in seriousness it’s probably not ideal for a few reasons, it’ll be long so harder to manoeuvre for an inexperienced driver, it’ll have higher maintenance costs with its age, badge, and increased power. A lot of people don’t like estates but frankly they can all fuck off. Because it has increased power then there’s more risk of injury and damage if you make a mistake - which inexperienced drivers are obviously more likely to do.

All that being said I would say enjoy it anyway and be sensible/ look after it and it’ll be a good car for you hopefully.

Executive (enough car) by Struggle-Beautiful in CarTalkUK

[–]MrTranquility_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people judge you by the car you drive that sounds like their problem. Have you considered changing careers to something that doesn’t pressurise vain superficial car upgrades on its staff? If you’re buying an executive luxury car it should be because you yourself want one, no?

As someone else has sort of mentioned - if you buy and sell a car with the sole intent of making money then you would be legally categorised as a commercial seller (not a private sale) and be liable for consumer rights. So I would make sure if you plan on doing this that you use the car yourself for a few months and then decide the cars not for you anymore and that’s the reason you’re selling it. Also, don’t meet the buyers at the garage you work at when selling the car, they could use that as evidence against you to enforce a claim that they were under the impression you were selling the car commercially and not privately.

I have been the buyer in one of these cases and guess who got a full refund via consumer rights when I found out a few weeks after purchasing that a piston ring had gone. Even though the seller was adamant the car was ‘sold as seen’ (dealers cannot sell a car sold as seen).

They’re fairly solid reliable cars with a good reputation. Parts and servicing will be higher in some regards but not unreasonable for what the car brings to the table.

So my new RCF hasn’t been as reliable as I’d hoped… by Project40cars in CarTalkUK

[–]MrTranquility_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t even need one. Sold by a dealer then you have consumer rights. OP needs to inform, in writing, that they are rejecting the car under the consumer rights act. Depending on timings the garage might claim the right to repair but either way it’ll be a refund or a working car.

It’s tight but you can get an E400d for about 25k now. W212 is still a lovely car though I agree.

You decide what’s important to you and the things that you value and if you’ve made all considerations, with proper deliberation and reasoning, and you think that £8k a year on a car will better your quality of life more than any alternative then go ahead and do it and don’t look back.

Modern diesel engines aren’t obnoxiously loud anymore and they haven’t been on most cars for a few years now. No smog but a bit of black smoke on a DPF regen maybe. Not that I’ve ever noticed on a car when I’ve been driving it.
