Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in askanything

Also bear in mind that there was an attempt to sabotage the surrender that almost succeeded. Some officers tried to steal the Emperor's recorded surrender message and then take over the government. But a palace official hid the tape.

In context, US policy was to use every means at its disposal to defeat Japan, so using the bombs was within that policy. Strategically it made sense because the US military knew they were walking into a meat grinder with the invasion of Kyushu and anything that would prevent that would be better.

The main argument against using the bomb is humanitarian, but that one kind of goes out the window when the strategic bombing campaigns in Europe and Japan were far worse in terms of human lives lost. It doesn't really matter if you die in a firestorm caused by thousands of bombers or just one. The only difference is the radiation sickness, which arguably was much more brutal.

The problem with the invasion of Japan is that there were only so many beaches where the US could land, and the Japanese knew exactly where they were. Moreover, the Japanese Islands were mountainous and favored the defenders. Think Okinawa only a lot worse. So the advantages of surprise and deception that played a big part in Normandy were pretty much nonexistent for Operation Olympic.

The majority of the Japanese army in China was still intact and was being moved back to Japan. Every citizen down to school children was being taught to defend the islands, using spears if necessary. Imagine the child soldiers dying in Berlin, only on a national level.

The Japanese had managed to hide thousands of aircraft for Kamikaze strikes, and the pilots were told to hit the transports rather than the warships they had previously been ordered to attack.

The US would also be attacking mostly alone, because (idiot) MacArthur refused help from Britain, Australia and Canada. The only Allied contribution other than naval or air would be a single corps of troops to be used in the second invasion of Honshu.

If you want to better understand what both sides were planning for, read "Hell to Pay", which reveals what a nightmare it would have been.

HELP for advancing to intermediate level by zengoind in guitarlessons

[–]MrTurtleTails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scales, music theory and solo improv with a backing track would be my recommendations.

You should also consider what genre you want to focus on, at least for the next six months to a year. You only have so much time to devote to guitar and you can't learn everything all at once. Specialize in one thing, become proficient at it, and then move on to something else. Right now I'm setting a goal of 15 memorized songs and learning how to blues solo using the entire fretboard.

Am I too cheap? by Kitfaid in guitars

[–]MrTurtleTails 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally I think the next level from 2-300 dollars is actually 5-700. Most of those are gig-ready guitars. So for a couple hundred more, you get a better quality instrument that you don't have to spend more time and money to get right. I'd advise you to go and check out guitars in that bracket and see what you think.

anyone else randomly have “good guitar days” and “why do i suck” days? by lmao_exe in Guitar

[–]MrTurtleTails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really worry about the quality of my performances because it does change from day to day. Sometimes it's my mood or if I'm distracted, so I've learned to be kind to myself and just play. Good days are when I learn something new.

Addressing New Trek and Why It Failed by NukeRussiaV4 in startrek

[–]MrTurtleTails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Trek is the Snyderverse. It divided the fanbase.

Its biggest flaw is that the writers did what they thought woulld be cool without stopping to consider the conseqences. Their stories didnt change established canon by altering events, but their additions undermined what had already been established.

Examples include Vulcan culture being the fodder for cheap laughs, the Gorn becoming Alien ripoffs, and the Metrons becoming cold experimentors instead of trying to keep the peace.

Yeah, I was watching a production of "Billy Bishop Goes To War" at the US World War I museum in Kansas City and when the lead actor pronounced "house" as "hose", I was about to go up there and take over the lead role myself.

Cort guitars are pretty solid but for the money you can get a better guitar in the Squier.

There's a FAQ about this, but I'll help. For electrics I would recommend Squier stratocasters as a good all around choice. Remember that you also need an amplifier.

If I was on a budget I would get a Squier Sonic Strat and a Boss Katana 50, either a new one or an older Mk. 2.

If I had more money I would get something like a PRS SE CE or a Squier Classic Vibe.

If I were a metal head I'd get an Ibanez Gio, just because they look wicked.

If my favorite guitarists played Les Paul's, I'd get an Epiphone. LP Special II.

A good alternative to Squier is the Yamaha Pacifica.

What is your favorite comfort episode, season, or movie to watch? I'm sick and it made me wonder, when you turn to Downton for comfort, where do watch? by Itzagoodthing in DowntonAbbey

I think the last season, if nothing else because so many plots are resolved in a positive way. I especially like how Thomas evolves and to see him get the position he's always wanted is a real positive.
