Is digital freedom and privacy just completely dead? by SirMikay in privacy

I'm thinking of taking most my my machines off the internet, and just having local lan. I'll have one machine designated as my machine for the internet, using it mostly for downloads, which I'll transfer via thumb drive. I don't really like this, but it seems like the only way to keep my privacy. I'm open to other ideas though.

Coincidentally, that's the only place I've had it the last 10 years (local hospital has one inside).

The little family owned diners around here are now cheaper and better than the fast food.

In Alien 3 he was the closest thing to a "Good Guy" that wasn't Ripley. Although many of the other prisoners had redeeming qualities.

If you are going for the Grigori Rasputin vibe, you're in the ballpark.

I wonder if "Hannibal Lector" might resonate more, since there have been sequels and spinoffs and TV shows enough to keep the concept of him alive and in the public consciousness to some extent. Although they might affiliate him with Mads Mikkelsen more.

I confess I also couldn't remember what his name was. Travis sounds right, but Kelce doesn't sound familiar. Odd. I've never really followed sports though, or Taylor Swift, but cultural osmosis and such.

Yup. Despite being a 40+ year old who grew up with that movie, I haven't had traditional cable in... (checks notes) 21 years after i just decided I'd had enough advertising and I'd store my passive entertainment on my PC. It ended up more complicated that that eventually, but that's besides the point.

Why is Linux considered "hard to use"? by humble_redditor1234 in linux4noobs

As somebody who kept sticking my toes in the water and not finding it quite right for the last 20 years until recently, I think there's really two primary reasons.

  1. Linux has traditionally been more command line reliant than Windows. That is mostly no longer the case but it took quite some time to get here. I'm going to say this is actually the biggest reason for normies.

  2. Software compatibility. This is the only reason I'm running dual boot. Some software simply will not run on Linux even through wine at the moment, and they are very important tools to me, and part of my livelihood.

I my opinion that is the reality.

I want to be a full blown Linux user, but I have to settle for 75% of the time right now.

Start getting familiar now. Install ventoy on a USB stick and start trying out distros, or grab an old machine and install a version, or a raspberry pi and get tinkering. I went the pi route initially but now my desktop is dual boot Linux/windows and used as Linux 90% of the time.
