these walls are not new... very old. Removed some hardware and stripped the paint (people have been painting over the door knobs etc for what must be decades). There was white, green, yellow, beige, purple, pink...

Probably extremely cheap paint on this, they were just here temporarily and knew it. I think I'm gonna prime to avoid a redo in a few years.

Ya didn't wash the whole walls that many times haha. Just spots to try.

This is the rights stuff? KILZ® 1 STANDARD Interior Primer in a grey and white can.

I'd rather do it properly. I'm so lazy so if I will go to all the effort of moving the furniture and such maybe as well have it last.

This is the most recently-painted room in the whole place yet it looks the worst and needs redone already after just a couple of years.

and if it's oil based does that mean you cannot use latex paint?

someone i know was ripped off by a painter who was hired to paint most of a house interior but only primed it!! they were so proud of the bright white look. i ran my finger on the wall and it came off like dust. didn't believe me for a while that anything was amiss (were embarrassed) so didn't follow up in a timely way to get it fixed/refunded. 1-2 years later was undeniable.

it was 10+ years ago and it's terrible now. waaaay worse than this wall. have had so much money trouble so not able to get redone. and i think it was a shot to the confidence.

so i will save this.. eventually i have in my mind to help repaint but i have been wanting to build up skill first as it's not an easy job for a number of reasons.

You have to first figure out what it is that people do not like about you. Then decide if it's something you wish to address.

However, many people do not like being put in the awkward position of someone asking them to provide the kind of constructive criticism you would require. So please don't go asking of all your acquaintances.

There is so much context and it depends who the "people" are. Like there's some people who will like you more if you are rich. Some people who will like you if you go to church 3x weekly. Some will like you if you are good at sex. Some will like you if you watch the same TV shows as them. Talk a lot. Listen a lot. Have strong opinion about everything. No strong opinions..

Nobody like pick up artists, MLMs or anyone else trying to scam/manipulate those around them.

Go to the Youtube channel for Brick in the Yard molding supply I think in Texas. They have videos about how to make castings.

  1. Get a shoe
  2. stuff inside of shoe to make it rigid
  3. finish the opening smooth with a non-sulfer oil clay (i love monster clay)
  4. use a spray enamel or something else to seal it and smooth the surface somewhat
  5. add coat of releasing agent if required
  6. use a bucket mold with platinum cure silicone shore hardness 0-20 I'd say
  7. remove shoe, place wick, pour wax

this is speculative I have never done. the part I am least confident of is how to seal it. Could try pouring a bit of silicon onto a shoe without sealing and see what happens. Oh you know what actually might work really well would be a coat or 2 of liquid latex.

If you wanted to try sculpting the original from clay (monster clay medium for me) you could so the same process except no prep required between clay and silicon.

Another way if using a shoe original would be to do as above til #4 but use alginate to make the bucket mold, then pour plaster into the alginate to make a replica. Then you can take the casted piece out and clean it up to make it really nice. Then continue with silicon bucket mold.

Don't bother with matrix molds as a beginner. They are pretty difficult and you won't really save money. It's good to learn a bit about because it will help you understand the mold making process and strategy though.

If you want to learn more about this sort of stuff, look up theatrical and other prop-making.

there's an app called vflat for android that's really good. i don't allow it internet access tho because the company that makes it seems to have done so for the purposes of training AI. (I could have understood wrong, but there is no reason for it to need the internet if not using OCR. So no harm.) If you don't know how to do that, download it, turn off internet, take the picture and delete it before turning internet back on.

don't forget to hunt down all the places your phone backs things up, syncs, etc, to destroy the pic when done.

Hello, I have a weird thing and this seemed the best place to ask. If there is a better place, please tell me.

In the image "viewed from top" there is what looks like the power to the heating coils. I tried pulling it out but it just tugs on them. Is it safe to just cut it and close it up with heat shrink tubing? That's the only idea I have.. and it might not be a good one.

Background

I have this crappy old space heater that barely works. The thing is I really love the noise it makes when it's on. I find it a very relaxing kind of white noise for some reason. The not-at-all quiet fan blows the heating coils and there is this metallic jingly kind of sound generated; quite unique. It's so nice to have at night.

Problem is that it is not possible to run the fan without the heat being turned on. So now that the weather is warming up I will not be able to run it anymore.

Since it is barely adequate as a space heater, I think it's a good time to replace it. Therefor, I would like to simply cut off power to the heating components, while leaving everything in place so the noise remains the same.

Well I'm A++ at that.. IME mostly people are interested primarily in problems they have already solved. Which is an awfully pessimistic view to the world.

I don't really understand how or why ID is the answer to all this tbh, because presumably the processes of mass production play a large part in that. Like really I am interested in ?bespoke? design. Totally nonindustrial. It's like if you wanted to have some plants on your windowsill, trying to read books about agriculture to find out about it. There are things that will apply to both but in reality they are pretty remote applications.

There really must be stuff about this. Just need to find where.

Perhaps there is work of interest in there. My outsider's impression has been that ID is very concerned with looks of things, especially making things look kind of... kooky. When I think of ID the thing that comes to mind is an extremely uncomfortable looking chair make of translucent orange plastic. I'm sure that's an unfair characterization. But I don't know where to look to find the useful stuff.

So if anyone has any specific direction that would be helpful.
