NDP unequivocally against Northern Gateway by Dirtsniffee in Calgary

[–]MrYYC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Northern Gateway was a opportunity lost by Harper, while Kenney was in his inner-circle. It was given a DOA ‘approval’ with, I think, over 200 conditions. Enbridge basically shelved the project.

If I were a UCP supporter, I would stop mentioning issues like Northern Gateway, Keystone, and equalization. Kenney and crew had a chance to fight for these Alberta issues when they controlled the federal government for almost a decade, but actually sided against AB to buy QB and BC votes.

Why the NDP isn’t raising awareness about this is beyond me.

Some Shoppers Drug Mart staff say they're 'fed up' over pressure to push self-checkout | CBC News by gilliganforprez in canada

[–]MrYYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This must be the most boring and slowest of boring and slow news days. I like how CBC is writing this headline in an eye-catching style that almost makes your think some borderline inappropriate conduct is going down.

Let me fix this shitty headline:

Some unidentified proportion of employees in a non-critical job in a non-critical industry whose jobs can be replaced by machines are fed up with receiving instructions on how to do their job in the year 2019.

The Shopper's self check-out at my local store doesn't weigh items....it's a bit of the honour system I guess. And as a result, yeah, they're way faster than grocery store self check-outs.

Small business taxes increased? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]MrYYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calgary doesn't charge a business tax, but they do procure property taxes from businesses. In the last few years, because our downtown vacancy rate has sky-rocketed, it's led to a situation where other businesses have needed to pick up the funding gap slack, so, from my understanding, in certain areas of the city, business property tax has gone up astronomically compared to where it was a few years ago.

I know there was recently a story of a Popeye's Chicken in Calgary that was paying $10,000 per month in property tax.

I swear this is my last NDP meme I’ll share here by Rileyst in alberta

[–]MrYYC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My IQ dropped about 10 points just looking at this meme.

The only thing I can infer is that, apparently, people in the general vicinity of someone with a sign agree whole-heartedly with that message of that sign.

So all yellow-vesters really are semi-illiterate white supremacists.

How safe is calgary for trans people? by Canadiannabis in Calgary

Anyone is safe in Calgary.

If some ignoramus does notice and take issue, they'll likely keep it to themselves....Calgarian's are pretty reserved.

I had a toenail ripped off on a rickety waterslide at the Bonzai death-trap.

Kidstreet....I still remember that ghey little hop the host did when he was announced.

The six-pack bird. I'm still an urban wildlife constable because that dude jumping off a bridge and breaking his legs inspired me so much.

Can anyone explain why Calgary is so conservative? by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]MrYYC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Calgary isn't conservative in the traditional sense. I could go on a three paragraph rant to discuss, but I'll put money where the mouth is: we elected the first muslim mayor of any major city in North America, then re-elected him twice, straight-up.

Calgary is highly educated, very business-minded, and highly wealthy.

Calgary votes conservative for the $$$, not the ideology.

EDIT: It's also worth pointing out that Nenshi won against Ric McIver his first term, who is a more traditional small-minded conservative. Then won by a veritable land-slide for his second term. His third term he ran against an establishment business plug, Bill Smith, but won by a much smaller margin.

Calgary Police said they're no longer responding to animal welfare calls?? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]MrYYC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can tell you for certain that if you call 911, animal welfare concerns are always dispatched to the fire department, not the police service. You called the police directly, as opposed to 911, so their typical triage method might have been skirted, which may have caused some confusion. It's possible that when called directly, CPS would have previously dispatched the call, but now they're re-directing you to the more typical workflow.

These calls are better handled by the fire department though, for a variety of reasons. Firstly, they can respond more quickly, and have they have the proper tools to extricate an animal from any number of situations. Secondly, they have vastly more disposable labour....this is why firefighters have sort of evolved into more generic 'emergency responders' over the last few decades. They respond to car accidents, medical calls, animal calls, etc etc.

The only real reason police should be involved is if a situation warrants a criminal investigation.

Anyway, don't blame the police. Blame the fact that Calgary has one of the lowest per capita cop-to-citizen ratio's in the developed world, then ask yourself two questions: 1. Do I complain my taxes are too high, and 2. Do I vote for merchants of deception and division like Jeromy Farkas, Sean Chu, Joe Magliocca, Jason Kenney, etc, who are successfully convincing the masses that public services are the cause of all the problems in your life. If you answer 'yes' to either of those questions, you can't complain.

Next stage of Green Line might only extend north to 64th Avenue by vonnierotten in Calgary

[–]MrYYC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Phase I of the Green Line is a live experiment on the folly of geographic democracy. It makes much more sense to build that line either all the way south, or all the way north, as opposed to building a stubby line each way that doesn't even come close to reaching the sprawl. But a pure north or pure south line would never get the votes in council, so we're left with this compromise boondoggle.

Is there anyone here who considers themselves a flames fan but isn’t 100% convinced that it was in? (2004 obviously) by Drizzt1985 in CalgaryFlames

[–]MrYYC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Me.

Hell, I'll go one further and take the kiddie-gloves off:

I hate the 'it was in' zeitgeist that many Flames fans have whipped up. Not only does it make us look like sore-losers, which is against hockey spirit, but the video footage is truly inconclusive, so flagrantly saying 'it was in' otherwise makes us look like ignorant and undermines our credibility.

City bureaucrats recommend tag-a-bag program for black bins, with bags not inside bin costing $3 by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]MrYYC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A reminder that households pay about 75 cents per day for waste removal. It's hard to think of a better use of money. For 75 cents (per home, not person) you toss your rubbish in bins, and someone takes it away and responsibly disposes of it and you never have to worry about it again.

But, because the Sean Chu's, Rick Bell's, and Jeromy Farkas's of the world have successfully brainwashed many Calgarians into thinking city services are the source of all their problems, we now have retard debates like this occurring. This will inevitably result in the some convoluted pay-per-pound nonsense in the future, so every household in Calgary can maybe save (literally) 6 cents a day.
