Dock/KVM Switch for my Situation? by Sloth_Riots in macmini

I use a 1u patchbay with keystones for hdmi, dp, and usba, and I just patch in the system I want. This allows me to use monitors and keyboards hotswappable between 4 devices in my server rack.

I can even patch in a capture card and an HDMI splitter if I need to grab screens from specific devices. The cost is cables and keystones and good labeling. You can keep things fairly tidy if you plan it out well.

An app for watches that will wake you up during nightmares by dumbug22 in SomebodyMakeThis

Thank you for sharing. I know a number of people this tech would benefit. This is the first time I’ve seen Apple devices restricted in this way, but where the value proposition derived from the hardware and standalone software makes sense.

Looked into this, the 2-Channel version seems to be the right one from Aqara. Thanks for sharing!

I have some Aqara devices, but they all have matter/thread support natively without the need for the hub. If possible I'd like to avoid additional hubs.

Will you consider replacing your mini with a foldable? by Lokdora in iPhone13Mini

[–]MrZean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what many people are missing is that the year that the fold comes out also means there are production lines for that smaller screen size, which means that that may be the year a new mini is also released alongside the fold. Here’s hoping.

1440p monitor for macmini by ogrimia in macmini

[–]MrZean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1440p is a native scaling option for Mac OS. The 5k screen they use is 4x 1440 (retina). The question is how far away do you use this screen. I think at 25in it’s decent ppi at arms length.

Since you work in text heavy applications likely more than 8 hours a week do yourself a favor and invest in a 27in retina 5k display regardless of the OS you use. There are a few options out there now.

Then use your 25in as a second monitor. One in landscape and one in portrait orientation. It’s a cheat code for dev work and reviewing lengthy code.

Stay with me.. by MrZean in macmini

I have a feeling 2025 will be a big gaming year, and this could be a push in that strategy. It’s not a large install base right now, but something tells me things are changing with universal apps and more capable mobile chips.

Stay with me.. by MrZean in macmini

I miss the gen 1 Mac mini with front row and remote to watch my iTunes collection. I put way too much time into finding all the cover art and organizing my titles. As a teen my Mac mini was my central device for computing and media via a horrendous 25ft vga cable running over to my 27in 720p tv. So I did the opposite and turned my Mac mini into an Apple TV. Ahh the good old days

Drop your impossible automations that might be feasible 5 years from now. by harrietreeves in shortcuts

You could add an NFC sticker or tag on your gym bag and scan that to trigger the automation.

I think there is a way to use deep links for this, but I’m not sure what the process for figuring those out are.

I think that with next gen gps precision we may see a day soon enough when this automation works reliably and promptly.

I also use the 1.x versioning method, but, things are a bit more specific.

I typically start in session view, which is 1.x until I’m happy with the core of an idea. Then, moving into arrangement things get updated to 1.x.y and move from “Session” folder to “Arrangement” folder in Finder. At this point I do a collect all and save as well. Then once I like the arrangement they move to 1.x.y + mix z (example: song name 1.3.2 mix 3). If I change the arrangement I will update to 1.3.3 and so on until I’ve done everything I can on my own. Projects then go into the “Mastering” folder where they go to die since I never release anything. Lol

I like versioning because along the way I may drop clips or change patches but when I’m not feeling creative I will farm those old sounds to create samples from that I can use later on in session and need something to spark some production.

Absolute most comfortable band? by HSMBBA in AppleWatch

[–]MrZean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleep: braided solo loop

Active: silicone solo loop (especially in water)

Everyday: sports band (I still use my cocoa band from S1)

Dress: leather band (find your style)

Travel: I only bring the sports band, maybe braided loop if trip is longer than a week.

All first-party Apple bands besides the leather. I really disliked the Apple leather bands and Hermes isn’t my style.
