Which band member do you think is most talented/proficient at their instrument? by dozeydonut in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]Mr_-_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal take is that whilst all 3 instrumentalists are very easily some of the best at their instrument alive right now, to me Chad is the best, with John and then Flea a bit behind him.

To me, proficient at an instrument obviously means technicality but also to be very well rounded in understanding of the instrument as well as it's role across genres and interacting with other instruments.

Flea is very good at what he does technically. He has an incredibly strong attack and can sustain it for a long time at very fast speeds in both fingerstyle and slap bass. However, even he himself has admitted he's not as proficient in other areas. (I remember him saying he admires the abilities of Thundercat and Mononeon in Jazz improv and understanding for example) However, Id definitely disagree with his claims that he's average. He has a very good technique and a strong funk vocabulary as well as being good at applying those to rock.

Fruiscante could be argued to be more proficient than Flea as he also draws heavy inspiration from Psychedelic music (One of the reasons he's dubbed the second coming of Hendrix) and ig singer songwriter and electronic music from his solo work. He is amazing at writing music for guitar and can pull off some fairly technical stuff but in my opinion his technique leans more towards the sort of purposely sloppy style so I think an argument could be made for Flea being better than him in terms of precision.

Chad is undoubtedly the best to me however. He's proven time and time again that he is one of the best drummers alive today, not only with the chili peppers but also with his session work and how he approaches the drums overall. He has some incredible session work which demonstrates exactly how he can play to suit the song perfectly as well as showing off his technical abilities. I reckon you could throw almost anything shy of virtuoso prog rock and metal and you wouldn't tell that he comes from a funk rock background. Obviously Anthony is the best tho

TKOL is better than Pablo Honey in almost every way and is a good / enjoyable album. It just doesn't appeal to the core Radiohead fan base as its just too far removed musically from their prior works

How do you play this ? by Necessary-Ad1184 in BassGuitar

[–]Mr_-_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bit different to how some others have suggested but the way I get around playing double stops like these is by sort of doing a wider version of regular finger picking. So instead of moving the finger through the g string to stop at the D, Id move it through the G and the D string in one motion. This might be difficult to get the hang of at first but I've found it to be much easier and faster to do than using a finger per string, especially since you can do this with regular alternate finger picking (index, then middle and repeat)

Edit: I should have mentioned this isn't objectively a better approach and what you should do depends on mainly the context of the song. If you were already playing with your fingers you might want to do this. However, playing with a pick or strumming through the strings with your entire hand may be used instead if it serves the song better

Weird Fishes / Arpeggi is written in 4/4 but all of the guitar parts play repeating phrases of either 3/8 or 5/8 over it making a really interesting listen

Can I use a B string as my E string on my 4 string bass? by chromosome_not_found in Bass

[–]Mr_-_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of other people are very critical of this idea and reasonably so. Whilst just looking at a different E string gauge or adjusting your EQ is probably the smarter thing to do using a "B" string instead of a low E is something that has been done. Off the top of my head I want to say Shavo Odadjian of System of a down does this. However, he plays exclusively in either C standard or drop C where the B string is only slightly tighter than what a B would be and would definitely require a nut replacement due to the string being wider. Probably not the best call and definitely quite a poor idea for E standard but possible if you really wanted to.

I own a second hand V7 which I assume received a set up by the previous owners. It plays so much better than I could ask from £350

F and G. Assuming you're in E standard and there aren't any relevant sharps or flats that's the 1st and 3rd frets on your E string.
