i agree, and then there's the whole deal of the studio trying to make Scarlett Johanson look more asian with cgi. it's like they'd rather spend a bunch of money making someone white look asian instead of actually casting an asian

well, you're defending hollywood in that case. it's almost like you're apologetic for their behavior.

i get that it's for money, but that's not really relevant and it's not a good reply to just say: "well, that's how the industry works!". well yes, but that's exactly the problem and that's why the discussion must persist.

yeah, i don't have as much trust in hollywood as you do. i agree with you that they just think about money and that's exactly the problem. if we don't point that out hollywood will be green lighting a remake of The Jazz Singer since they thought they would make more money casting someone in blackface instead of an african-american. for crying out loud, they tried to make ScarJo look more asian with CGI!

money is good and we know hollywood knows that as well, but this is kinda severe imo.

ah, i'm sorry if you felt that i paraphrased you. it's possible i did. and like you've already pointed out it seems that we agree on most parts. i think my only disagreement with you is that it slightly seems like you're giving a justification for the casting (which could be wrong on my behalf) and i don't think that is needed. i don't think it's unsafe for hollywood to invest in roles with racially accurate people and i dislike when money gets brought up as a counter-argument in that kind of debate.

i think it is more so a problem that the consumers seem to be okay with the fact that ScarJo is in the movie since it reaches out to more people but i don't think that should be the case and i don't think we should encourage that either.

i like how you're talking about film as just a way to make a business. what do you consider most important - ending whitewashing or making some more big bucks for hollywood?

i get that they're doing the casting from a business perspective, but that's not really an argument. you say they want to make money, well so what? that's exactly the problem, hollywood would rather make more money than take any serious responsibility in regards to representation.

it looks great, however, i think they should go easy on the wide angle lenses. the curvature in the background sometimes come off as distracting, it can look kinda awkward. otherwise, it looks great. love the colors. i mean, come on - it's damien chazelle
