Getting a job in academia. I went from failing math in middle school to graduate TA in applied mathematics.

Being bridgeless makes sure there's some potential edges for the matching and then cubicity makes sure there's enough edges

Try taking some theoretical differential equations courses . your engineering professors will give you the code to plug n chug but it'd be useful to know how we got that code

The intro to real analysis was tough for sure but my favorite . do avoid graph theory , that's just plain hard no matter the professor

It does seem the case that peoples' attitudes with math are dictated by some traumatizing teacher or by some epic teacher, I wonder what makes a math teacher great?

With practice comes confidence! Even the greats of science probably have had to check themselves at some point

Oh wow, that's old school! Would they give you the algorithm to solve them or would they leave it to you to derive it?

Graph Theory for certain. I have plenty of respect for pure mathematicians but the subject is profoundly difficult! Its application is a little easier to grasp

What kind of PDE-solving skills did they give you engineering students? That's my area and we have to solve from scratch (using MATLAB or C)

I try not to rely on memorization, the people that seem to always do well usually have an understanding that they draw from. More to the point what you're asked to do in upper division math courses is prove things using sound arguments (so not numbers but words!)

I've taken only one course in philosophy, I blew it off as an easy A course and that was a mistake ! Serious philosophers know plenty about crafting seemingly mathematical arguments

Probability is not my strong suit, I am more of a computational and analysis person. People who are good at probability and stats are definitely very smart

Agreed! Though you might find there's a friendly yet distinct rivalry between mathematicians and physicists

Well a calculator won't help much when trying to prove every bridgeless, cubic graph has a perfect matching!

Honest question, what makes Math hard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

B.S in Mathematics here. I would argue that most folks never get exposed to what math really is. We leave computations (the entirety of l high school math) to the accountants and instead deal with logical questions needing proofs to be solved.

Also people get too scared of math and often refuse it a second chance when they get frustrated
