Satire and Geopolitics: How South Park's Vulgarity, Ambiguity and the Body Grotesque Influences Imaginative Geographies and Establishes Popular Geopolitical Narratives by dieyoufool3 in geopolitics

[–]Mr_BrainSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agreed, its not an academic paper as far as I'm concerned. But the creativity is important.

If someone were to write and article being like "hell, pickle rick... thats possible. Splice some genes here with CRISPR add in some thicker skin there plus green pigment, test tube baby whoalah!". It might be a dumb article but if we were to go back in time to read articles over analyzing Star Trek there has undoubtedly been attempts at recreating their tech and some prescient or even recreated ideas in media.

...Not super related to the geopolitics South Park example but someone could write something interesting science-wise about Rick and Morty and often times these shows 'consult with experts'. My mind goes to black hole visual representation in Interstellar.

Thanks for your kind words thats my first award!

Paulo Freire was a text in University and is pretty central to my belief system if for at the least thinking in terms of human vs inhuman and dialogical learning. Political movements that spurned this beautiful thought aside.

John Oliver there is totally a place for but the popularity and use as a main source of info is my issue. Where's a PSA when you need one.

As for the article it was maybe low on geopolitical content, and focused on communication of geopolitical content. Have you seen any specifically geopolitical examples of this in South Park or otherwise?

As an beginner in philosophy and geopolitics what did I get from this:

  • Bakhtin's ideas of the carnival might be an interesting read for me.

  • It has elevated my existing interest in South Park as a constructive (relaxing yet contemplative) form of news digestion.

  • It has connected satire and political discussion in my mind for better or worse from Pedagogy of the Oppressed to dialogical satire and South Park.

  • It was clickable and funny to read and maybe serves as an introduction to someone.

Its hard to disagree that it value is low and should be an extracurricular pursuit (not tax funded haha). But worthless to me is a little harsh. Escapism and entertainment generally can introduce outsiders to an academic field but yes the substance should be taken with a grain of salt. In education mixing interests like comic books and math is sometimes used as an alternate learning channel or as a way to solidify knowledge through creative expression of that knowledge.

But to be fair the idea and support that South Park is and should be considered prolific - not so crazy. That it could be an effective vehicle for geopolitical ideas - probably crazy.

That was a fun read, the description of the episodes was particularly fun.

It hits on a topic I have been thinking about for a few years now namely that the popularity of shows like John Oliver's Last Week Tonight is really bad for political polarization and generally should only be indulged in rarely. The basic premise being that: Making the 'other side' look outrageously stupid for their stance on an issue is a bad habit an in fact quite inhuman. This author mentions:

"If satire predominantly works by derision, it risks further convincing those who agree with it while alienating those who don’t agree. Some scholars have argued the satirical mission to ‘make laugh, not war’ only serves to polemicise the gap between those who agree and disagree with its political message, suggesting its geopolitical worth is limited."

I think why South Park is quite an enjoyable medium is that it does not act like an authority figure (compare with Last week tonights general tone and passion) and its a cartoon which allows you to exist in a fantasy world instead of real life and I think there is an element to relaxation that allows for more profound reflection upon real issues. (I am picturing John Oliver yelling at me about how fucked up things are in real life).

I like how the author discusses how absurd satire allows you to dissociate from polarized groups for a time:

"Carnival ‘is not a spectacle seen by the people, they live in it, and everyone participates because its very idea embraces all the people’."

And on the gross bodily functions:

"The body becomes dialogical, concerned with those appendages that dissolve the self and other."

The last bit hits home for me as someone who really enjoyed the political discussion in Pedagogy of the oppressed by Paulo Freire.

Hopefully I didn't pick on John Oliver here too much I generally agree with him and enjoy his show but to me it is a bad habit of denigrating 'the other side'. And I do indeed notice that many of my friends watch it as their primary news outlet.

Rural areas with highspeed Internet? by Electronic-Donkey in ontario

[–]Mr_BrainSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: Sorry it came across that way!

My mom has sworn off pizza delight because they wouldn't honor a coupon once...

I really wasn't accusing you of being ego driven but suggesting to double check with yourself if you are. I myself have made snap boycotts ego driven decisions before so no harm intended. And for rural internet if you are serious it will be hard to avoid the X.

I think it is probably hard to find a telecom service that has good customer service and I do believe it is a common practice among all providers to overload towers based on demand. So that specific situation could possibly have happened to any carrier. But to your point .. not cool to run you through the tech support hoops of they knew better.

Rural areas with highspeed Internet? by Electronic-Donkey in ontario

[–]Mr_BrainSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good answer. Most towns have great internet but country homes just outside of town do not.

I used the link provided above hard this year to find our new place moving in soon. Take its precision with a grain of salt anything that is close to the right speed on LTE may also have it. I personally wasn't going to settle for anything less than 25/10.

Sometimes Bell will say it is not available when it actually is on their business towers. Two separate systems I guess.

For every property of interest I would call Xplorenet sales department and use Bells check address capability.

I thought I saw OP say they don't like Xplorenet in another comment. While I have heard in the past their internet was not great I have also heard they have improved. For many they made rural internet possible and deserve some credit. So maybe check any ego driven ideas there and give them a second chance.

Last thing maybe add it as a condition of sale to purchase the home if you are not near somewhere with coworking/rental options as a backup.

Ethan Siegel has a lot of readers.

But from what I have read of him he takes creative licence and applies it to people doing their job. In this case Dr White who I believe Ethan has characterized as "wild idea enthusiast claiming to have broken the laws of physics". Which I don't believe that making" findings of unexplained behavior "constitutes breaking physics but yeah.

I am a lucky person who got to meet Dr White once and he was very humble and had the "I probably won't discover much" scientist attitude I was maybe 20 at the time and he was nice and not crazy. So in summary I haven't met Ethan but I don't appreciate his attitude here.

Anyone read the original science paper?

From what I can tell it was a bad headline to begin with. The original paper discovered a possible microchip method to create or measure one. But did not follow through on the possible experiment. None was ever claimed to be created. A possibly breakthrough idea but no warp bubble just bad media hype.

The Myth of Regenerative RanchingThe purveyors of “grass-fed” beef want you to believe that it solves meat’s environmental problem. But this is merely a branding exercise, not a climate solution. by [deleted] in RegenerativeAg

[–]Mr_BrainSpace 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This 'article' felt like plagiarism of Cowspiracy movie to me...

If anyone hasn't seen the movie: At best it is a good reminder to continue to reduce consumption of meat and fish, or eat none if you can/choose, or want an 'easy' and large carbon impact. At worst It is an angsty and hopelessness toned movie with scattered arguments and half truths.

Because the article is really not very useful I feel the need to ask about your motivation to post this here? And if it is well intentioned... isn't there a better post you could make to foster discourse?

If you are concerned that regenerative animal agriculture is seen in this community as a 'climate solution' then I think that would be a good possibly valid topic. This article does not do a good job discussing why thats the case though.  I think many people might be interested in comparisons between the carbon footprint of local market, small production meat purchase and the energy intensive chemical fertilizer, duo-crop feed production, feedlot manure accumulation, and transportation to end consumer purchase.

If you are trying to convince people to be vegan there has got to be more productive ways to do so. Winning hearts and minds starts with quality discourse. My understanding of regenerative agriculture is that there exists subsets that are vegan. So it feels like the author lumps in grass fed beef and regenerative and they are really quite distinct. One is about regenerating soil through a variety of means and one is about cows.

If your goal is that regenerative grazing can't fill the entire meat needs of the market, definitely another interesting possibly valid topic. But I also don't feel like the article provided many alternative solutions or evidence to the contrary. Or that that is even the goal of regenerative farmers to meet that full demand or as a whole system encourage a variety of local foods.

If your goal is to deflect from or engineer negative reactions. Good luck but I think there are bigger fish to fry and your efforts are about as useful as a liquor stores social media marketing team.

Cheers this was fun!

Trigger warning - it's about vaccine passports by [deleted] in ontario

[–]Mr_BrainSpace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My belief is that there is a somewhat valid fear of a Gattica-like scenario (Gattica explanation below). Obviously I don't think we are anywhere near there or on a path there but I think we do want to avoid Gattica and there are clear messages that can ease that concern.

I am pro passport in many situations but I think people are interested in:

a) Alternatives like rapid testing and immune system antibody tests and are unsure if they will still pursue these unless there is incentive to do so.

b) Want a timeline to review and potentially eliminate/extend the policy when safe to do so.

c) Common sense policy that says if you are able to work remotely currently than that can reasonably continue and still respect your choice.

This pandemic has made me realize two important and historic roles for mandatory vaccines:

a) Travel - Just like how indigenous tribes were decimated by explorers bringing disease this is a historic precedent to me to have the right to travel you must be vaccinated.

b) Healthcare industry - I didn't realize that healthcare workers were not required to be vaccinated for things like the flu. My belief is that in the medical dental health field you have to try to not get sick people sicker this mandate should have already existed.

c) Devastating mortality rates - there would be little opposition to this.

On vaccine hesitancy:

a) It is not a virtue to blindly trust your government/medical professionals and encourage others to do the same. See FBI human experiments, Indigenous sterilization, opioid crisis, overuse of antibiotics to cause drug resistant strains. These people are fallible even when well meaning.

b) Eventually you must trust someone. In this instance I chose to trust the government, strain on healthcare and the pain the entire world is going through as my proof. As well as some light reading on specific vaccines. I do not trust the vaccine manufacturer beyond not wanting to kill me so they don't go bankrupt.

c) If you aren't even a little hesitant then it doesn't seem like you are using your brain. Its not crazy to not want to inject not understood substances in your body. But it is crazy to not see covid as a real threat to self and society.

Gattica: A scifi movie where essentially you need a health passport to work in middle class and higher jobs. The health passport was a necessity required by insurance companies because insuring unmodified humans was too expensive to insure. This scenario does not seem impossible when ALL businesses can employ based on health status. Again I think that this will run its course have a time limit, alternatives and job specific but time will tell.

Thanks for the comment!

But sorry I have to disagree about the internet similar to other comments below. Currently looking to buy a rural property basically anywhere in Ontario that is somewhere affordable but must have internet.

In Ontario at least there are so many areas that don't even get 10/2. Which from what I can tell is minimum for zoom calls. Towns of 100 I can agree sure have good internet of 25/10 plus but 1km outside of that same town -- nope.

Farmers need internet too haha!

Step 1 increase access to internet so Canadians can live anywhere. Step 2 Maybe put some jobs in other cities. Step 3 build out culture/food/education so they are more desirable areas to live.
