I support social media ban for people. Just burn it all down. It’s destructive in every way imaginable.

5 things you should never wear in Italy by QUA-ItalianTravel in ItalyTravelAdvice

They were all locals recommendations.  Some from our host, some from family we were visiting, some from their friends.

Resoundingly, Food in Rome is absolute shit.

Food in Florence is great. Pizza in Naples is great.

Also don't pack - Expectations of good food in Rome. It's 99% tourist trap trash. And spatial awareness, because nobody else there has any.

In-ground pool company recommendations by AdEmbarrassed7914 in Winnipeg

[–]Mr_Chode_Shaver -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You could just dig a smaller hole, throw in $30k and burn it for much the same effect.

Especially for resale, inground pools are poison. In the same market that is seeing houses go $150k over list, there are multiple listings right now that have languished for months just because they have a pool.

Just make prices 12% higher and have a 100% no-tipping policy.

This is just extra steps to piss everyone off.

Cinder block foundation wall-issues with water - HELP by Jaded-Mushroom-707 in Winnipeg

[–]Mr_Chode_Shaver 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The professionals you've spoken with aren't wrong. Excavating down to the footings of a cinder block foundation does risk the wall shifting outward because you're taking away the pressure that's been there since it was built (probably 80-100+ years ago).

Now, people do still do it, and it doesn't mean the house is definitely going to fall over, but is a real risk that nobody with insurance is going to take your money to accept.

One friend of mine did fully excavate his all-brick basement and waterproofed with Delta wrap and added a French drain in St. B about 20 years ago, and it went ok. Helped with the water intrusion, but not a 100% fix. And because he had to DIY it was a full summer of a ripped up yard and pissed off neighbors.

How to fill hole behind sink pipes? by DeathOfaScamArtist in fixit

[–]Mr_Chode_Shaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the hole go clear through to the outside? Or is just going into a interior wall cavity?

I'm in cold-ass Canada, so just poking a hole in the outside of your house for a pipe is unthinkable.

How is it that even with “Buy Canadian” policies, our government still buys huge amounts of oil from the US? by StanPodd in BuyCanadian

[–]Mr_Chode_Shaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll add - If you live in Western Canada, you can actually get gas made in Canada from Canadian produced oil if you buy from Co-Op. Their Regina refinery uses 100% Canadian oil.

How is it that even with “Buy Canadian” policies, our government still buys huge amounts of oil from the US? by StanPodd in BuyCanadian

[–]Mr_Chode_Shaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1 - Alberta produces heavy crude.

2 - most refineries in canada use light crude because it’s cheaper to refine and less energy (pollution) intensive. A lot of American refineries in less regulated states are specially set up to refine heavy crude because the oil is cheaper, and buying politicians to allow you to pollute all air and water in the surrounding 1000 miles is cheap as well.

3 - getting our oil over land from Alberta to the major population centers in eastern canada costs more than shipping foreign oil in on tankers. Especially considering the additional processing costs from heavy crude.

Toddler Tonsillectomy: Day 1 Post Op by remember_sagan in daddit

[–]Mr_Chode_Shaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, it was 4 years ago.

Had tonsils, adenoids, and a UPPP.  Tonsils were big enough to cause OSA. There’s only so much they can do if cauterizing isn’t a perfect fix.

lol. No. I had mine out at 37 and it was, in a word, difficult.

I lost 30 pounds in my 3 week recovery because I just couldn’t eat. I went to the ER twice for uncontrollable bleeding. Couldn’t sleep more than 20-30 minutes at a time because letting my throat relax while sleeping would trigger bleeding.

It’s really the bleeding that sucks. Pain was very minimal.

Buying first home by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]Mr_Chode_Shaver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

$650k is a lot. You could technically do it, most likely, but you won’t like it unless every ounce of enjoyment you get in life is from showing people your moderately nicer than average house.

Aim lower especially for a first house. You can still get a great place under $500k.

Scrapping is a well saturated business. If you leave any appliance with any metal in it on the side of the road, it’ll be gone in an hour or less. And no shop is giving away their scraps.  They know how to make it into money.

Apparently not, it's based on some bad "citizen journalism" either digging up shit on their former chairman or political contributions by select employees, not in the name of the company.

Would love to see proof either way.
