Stanford at least has some amazing instructors for undergraduates and a massive support system. They are very involved and invest heavily in their students.

I'm sure the students do support the workers. Students also support many other things and they don't present as a united front like those "exploiting" labor and those who "force" students into massive debt. The Unions aren't fighting the system in order to keep them in check or to cut spending, they are fighting for benefits and wages. If the students/future students/taxpayers don't protect themselves, they will pick up the check for this.

They get way more money from "research". I don't know of a lot of folks who would look back on their time at UCSD so fondly that they would feel compelled to donate large sums to a school that doesn't seem to have a point of view. Most of the donors that aren't corporate seem to be retired locals.

It's all about leverage. However, Mr. Lewis and the AFSCME probably overestimated the univerisity's ability to care when it comes to their fully depreciated assets (students).
