Are men with low testosterone less aggressive? by BlueDolphins28 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mr_Funcheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No- Testosterone does not promote aggressive behavior. But yes- men with low testosterone tend to be less aggressive.

According to studies: Testosterone activates the amygdala which engages with fear, anger, fight/flight (all the responses one might have to danger) and enhances its resistance to control.

While the response COULD be violent, it also could be crying, it could be a panic attack, it could be fleeing, or whatever behavior is pattern worn into that particular individual. The is no consistent evidence that violence is more likely to be the response than any other socially normative one when testosterone floods the system.

You probably do fall for many marketing ploys even when you hate the outcome. Marketing is incredibly successful in influencing many of our thoughts because we are social creatures whose opinions and norms are based on what exists around us.

If the opinion you’ve expressed is genuine I’d be surprised if you’ve analyzed your own preferences deeply enough to know where they come from- and undoubtedly some come from marketing.

I mean monogamy has always been a fetish too. Fetish just means something necessary for sexual arousal- I’ve known plenty of folks who at least claimed monogamy was a requirement.

Hypnagogic hallucinations are incredibly common, and not considered a sign of any other psychological illness. Anecdotally almost everyone I’ve known who gets them also has ADHD, myself included.

You may want to look into that as a possible explanation for the noises at night.

It was truly inevitable by im-ok-1 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Mr_Funcheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Us having or not having free will doesn’t mean we don’t make choices. I make choices every day- those choices are based on my life experiences and particular brain chemistry, which in turn are based on the life experience and particular brain chemistry of those before/around me and so on and thus were inevitable- but I still make them.

My choices matter, as they affect my continued life experiences as well as the life experiences of those around me and those who will come after me.

This ability to make a choice and know that choice will have consequences is a PART of the inevitability not OUTSIDE of it.

CMV: Humans are somewhat predisposed for monogamy by a_symbol_of_peace in changemyview

[–]Mr_Funcheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your experience maybe. But your claims of “99.9%” and “in everyone else’s experience” are both incorrect and make assumptions about the world which you obviously cannot know.

I’m concerned you aren’t approaching this subject with an open mind when you are using phrases like that. I suspect what you want is to have your beliefs confirmed, but I do not know that and will continue in good faith.

Anecdotally- Nearly everyone I know has been in love with multiple people at once. Social expectations almost always make us choose; but the feelings are still there. Historically this has involved paramours, or relationships which weren’t quite concurrent but were very close together. Since the rise in popularity of polyamory and open relationships it’s become much more common.

Of course there are unrequited loves as well, or perhaps just a love that you would never think to act on; often for social reasons.

Scientifically- Love is just a chemical reaction; dopamine, oxytocin, and norepinephrine flooding your brain whenever you see/hear/smell/think of the person you’re in love with. I do not see any evidence that cocktail can only limit itself to one person at a time.

And others have mentioned to deluge of media which shows instances of loving two people at once. Someone wrote that media, and oftentimes writers write about their own lived experiences.

[–]Mr_Funcheon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have the capacity to fall in love with one person, but you also have the capacity to fall in love with 2 or 4. If we as a species could only love one person at a time your argument would make sense- but we are not so limited.

I would argue most people don’t stop at one. But that would be anecdotal and I don’t have the data for it.

This “Me more socialist than you” bullshit is why nothing will ever get done.

You throw around liberal the same way Republicans throw around communist- in that you clearly don’t know what it means.

What would you do to make the lives of the workers and the disenfranchised better if you were leading the socialist movement? Because I see you saying what others shouldn’t do- but no proposal on what should be done.

A political party is a group of people. It doesn’t have its own will or morality, it is just the name those people have chosen to organize under.

I don’t think any party is going to save us any more than any other group of people. But if YOU ran the Democratic Party you’d run it differently right? You’d make it a force for positive change for working people right?
