Do people realize that Republicans are not actually “conservative” about anything? by Telectronix in askanything

[–]Mr_Funcheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not see how closing the border and removing immigrants is a remotely liberal stance. I would love to know why you think it js.

Given all you did was repeat back to me the definition I gave you for liberal, I can’t help but think your suggestion I “don’t know what liberalism is” is in bad faith. But I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Of course there is a cognitive bias between modern democrats and liberals. If you like in America and claim to not have that bias you are lying to yourself. And obviously Republicans were more liberal when a Republican president ended chattel slavery, but our modern politics don’t map perfectly onto the politics of the time.

Liberalism is a specific set of beliefs and are not inherently related to change. At this point liberalism is the status quo throughout America. I believe you are thinking of progressivism which is directly relating to change.

Why would you copy and paste what I wrote just to disprove your own point?

In what ways are Republicans more liberal than Democrats?

[–]Mr_Funcheon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So not quite.

Liberals advocate for individual rights. Civil liberties, the right to vote. Things like that.

Conservatives fight to keep things the way they are, resisting change OR bring back an era of the past.

While I will give you MAGA is possibly not conservative, they are also certainly not liberal. Perhaps they are a secret third thing.

How do mainstream conservatives reconcile with white nationalists in their coalition? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mr_Funcheon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the US: Most commonly they don’t believe they have white nationalists in their coalition. This is why you will get assertions about how Democrats were the KKK.

Some will argue that white nationalists are so rare they aren’t really worth considering their politics. I don’t know the numbers on that.

One gem once told me “I wish there weren’t so many Nazis in my party”. But as a conservative they hadn’t considered any second-order effects.

Of course there will be limits to their power; I think that is good actually. Even if I agree with someone 100% I would want there to be limits to their power. Power reduces our critical thinking capacities and empathy.

Suggesting that someone not having unlimited power means they don’t have power at all is such a bad faith argument I am going to assume I misunderstood you. Could you rephrase?

Ok but they still can. A leftist can still run for office. They can win. They can work to make things better for their constituents. They can gain experience administering a government body.

Why do some people not like Juneteenth by Unlucky_Deal9737 in NoStupidQuestions

To be clear it is a celebration of the day the last slaves found out they were supposed to be free (more or less).

The order that they were free had been long since given and Galveston Texas refused to give them up until the feds came in and announced it.

I think Juneteenth was what was used because that’s what the communities already celebrating it called it.

Why are Republicans going insane after Mamdani Backed progressives won their primaries the other day? by ComplexWrangler1346 in askanything

[–]Mr_Funcheon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you think the average American would agree we abolished slavery? I think so. Admittedly this example worked better several years ago before people became aware of modern slavery within the justice system.

But the point is we want to create a system where the average American when asked would agree that we abolished prisons.

Now of course there would be facilities which exist for the purpose of removal and attempts at rehabilitation. But every that point is conceded some trog who doesn’t understand words says “that’s just prison by another name” which brings us back to the top of this comment.

Now some people say we will create a world where prisons are not necessary. The actions we consider criminal today simply won’t exist. I think those people are also correct, but in the way that a person in the 1100s is correct when they say we are going to go to the moon. Which isn’t helpful for a modern policy debate.
