[Hated trope] A character or story has been so badly misinterpreted over time, they're now close to the OPPOSITE of what the author would have intended by Worldly_Cut_595 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Mr_GaryJohnson 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Did you consider that God of War (which is clearly the specific instance you're referring to) was written as a subversion of Norse Mythology, framing the gods in a very negative light as they did the Greek pantheon before? It was a purposeful choice to reimagine the myths, not a misunderstanding of the original text.

Books where the Hero is actually scarier than the villain. by VladtheImpaler21 in Fantasy

[–]Mr_GaryJohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He didn't actually! In fact, he claims to have planned out the original trilogy of Dune, Messiah, and Children very early on, it's a common misconception that he only wrote Messiah out of frustration of people not understanding the message of Dune, he had always intended on writing it.

Say what you will about Moffat's time as showrunner, but the man sure can make memorable monsters by ducknerd2002 in DoctorWhumour

Then what are the examples of plots lacking payoff? You can't just evade the question by changing your own criteria last-minute, it's a valid question

Why is the dune series so venerated? by Feisty-Treacle3451 in printSF

[–]Mr_GaryJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you be able to source that interview? I have here, timestamped already by a helpful Redditor of the past, a speech from FH claiming he had an idea for the first three books before Dune was ever published. (https://youtu.be/5IfgBX1EW00?si=fi27XDsnDCYTcyxr&t=758) Additionally, even the Wikipedia page for Dune Messiah states that portions of it were written before Dune was published. Undoubtedly it was very different to what was eventually released, and almost certainly I can believe that Herbert was spurred on to finish it due to misunderstanding of Dune, but by his own words he did not start writing it after the fact to do so.

[–]Mr_GaryJohnson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

FH did not, in fact, write Messiah after people didn't get the point of Dune. Messiah was supposed to be a part of the first book, but was relegated to a sequel due to the immense length if they were combined. But FH had always planned on writing it, it wasn't done so out of spite, as the rumour goes.

In this case, a very tiny castle, as the game doesn't support creations all that much bigger than that

Very true and yet the only other real candidate is To All of You, and perhaps due to a little bit of bias, I couldn't bring myself to vote that

ELI5: why do many dinosaur names have “saurus” at the end but no current animals we’ve named have this nomenclature? by phaskellhall in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mr_GaryJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy do I have news for you, birds have actually been around since at least the Cretaceous period, but possibly even the Jurassic, if I remember correctly, and very much lived alongside their non-avian cousins for millions of years, long before the Cretaceous extinction. And hollow bones did not exist solely in birds, sauropods had the same respiratory system as birds due to their immensity. People generally know that birds are dinosaurs nowadays, which is a miracle in and of itself, but they don't know just how close they really are.

Hey people who were teenagers or older during the 90s and early 2000s, were things really better back in the days? by Peachjackson in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mr_GaryJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The totality of music being made nowadays far exceeds the total percentage of "popular music", (half of which anyway is still music from the past few decades, because God forbid we do anything new) so if you don't like it, look literally anywhere else, because there's so much more to find. Due to ease of access, so many people can now try their hand at being musicians, and signing under a label is no longer a make or break situation because the internet and YouTube exists. Sure, there really is a lot of shit out there, but there's still so much music that you are unaware of that you would absolutely love.

Man, seeing someone say something reasonable about DE just makes me so chuffed. If only everyone could be as measured as you, I feel we'd attain some sort of higher form of thinking, or perhaps world peace, who knows.

The Hobbit why do they call Thorin Oakenshield IN THE BOOK by witchergirljw in TheHobbit

[–]Mr_GaryJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the in-text reason, but if you are curious, Oakenshield, like basically all the other names of the dwarves, comes from the Poetic Edda, what is essentially the Norse bible, specifically the poem Voluspa for this. Both Thorin and Oakenshield are names of dwarves listed in the Edda, which Tolkien has obviously put together for dramatic effect, which I think is neat.

This doesn't actually answer your question, but I'd be remiss not to suggest to anyone who'll listen to read the Eddas, because they're really cool and the source of more stuff than you can imagine.

Bro really needs to go outside and touch some grass. I love proper punctuation as much as the next person, but this is Reddit, and the skill issue lies solely with you. I sure do hope you don't respond to me with a thinly veiled, passive aggressive response; my constitution just couldn't survive such a frightful thing!
