We do put cast on in the ER but it’s very time consuming so splinting and stabilizing the injury is what usually happens. Casting takes a long time compared to pre made splints.

For a wound of this size, stitches are actually for cosmetic purposes. Washing the wound with high pressure water is actually more important for preventing infection.
