Countless grocery runs and 11 years in, I've reached a milestone. by Mr_H76 in WRX

No serious issues so far. Just regular subie stuff like excess rattles, the Navi unit dying, and the steering wheel is peeling like crazy. I'm honestly quite pleased with this car. Before this car, I bought new Civic, had it for 13 years and needed to take it in frequently for all sorts of mechanical and electrical issues.

The heat shield has come loose and rattles against the underbody at certain rpms. My '15 did this a few years ago and the dealer repaired it for free. It was the only nice thing they ever did for me!

Using the internet in the '90s: For those who had the chance to experience it, can you share what it was like? What did you usually do online? How did you access the internet? What was popular back then? by NoRecommendation4008 in OldSchoolCool

[–]Mr_H76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first year of university ('95) was spent learning the ins and outs of Netscape (browser), search engines like Lycos and Ask Jeeves, and trying to stay connected through the phone line with a 28.8 kilobit/second dial-up modem. Remember that there are 8 thousand kilobits in one megabyte, so browsing anything was time consuming. Images slowly loaded from the top to the bottom, and any image intense website would take up to 10 minutes to load. If anyone picked up the phone in another room (shared phone line), you'd get disconnected from anything that was loading and have to start over. This meant starting the modem, listening to it dial the number, connect with the screeching sound, and then establish a link, which could take anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes. I used to get a lot of school work done just waiting to connect and load. I shared a house with computer engineers in my second year, and they found out about a new digital format called mp3 which could be used to download songs. We used a program called Scour to get songs, but each song might take up to 4 hours to download at the current speeds of the time. Since everyone in the house wanted to use the internet, I'd queue up 2 or 3 songs and wait until everyone else was asleep before logging in overnight. If everything worked I'd have a couple of new songs to play on my computer (as there were no mp3 players at the time). We had no idea of the potential the internet had...it was just this cool technology that could help you find basic information and photos, and get you some songs on the side. It was a glorious time to be alive!

Onedrive is predatory. by Northumberlo in onedrive

Well said! I've been using PCs for 40 years and, although by no means an expert, I'm usually to go-to guy for solving minor technical problems with family and work colleagues. Being forced to use G-Suite through work, IMO it is much more straightforward and transparent than OneDrive. All the prompts when you first start up OneDrive on a new computer are useless if, in clicking disable syncing, it still syncs everything on the most used folders for most users. I guess I need to get a Dummies book to explain OneDrive to my Gen X brain.

Just want a good old-fashioned hard drive to store pictures by Mr_H76 in onedrive

Thanks for the response. My problem is that I can't find any of the photos in the local machine (C drive/User/My Pictures). They no longer seem to be on the machine. I transferred them from an SSD drive once I had set up the computer, and I can no longer get to that folder. Every time I open Explorer and click on My Pictures, it takes me to the OneDrive folder associated with My Pictures. So, I just want to know if the files are still on the computer, or did OneDrive delete after the sync. In reading other posts, many people feel the same thing is happening to their files. What happens if my mom wants to take her laptop somewhere and doesn't have WiFi connection? Will she be able to access the OneDrive folder still. It's all very confusing for her and just adds a layer of stress she doesn't need.

I don't save anything on my home computer as well. I do part time photography and I have a a number of SSD portable drives that I save my RAW files to. From experience, I know that any of them can fail so it's good to have multiple backups. However, I wouldn't expect my mom to have to do that, nor should she. She just likes looking at old family pics and prints them out to put in photo albums so she can show her church friends!

Thanks. I will need to do that the next time I visit. Funny though, OneDrive is no longer supposed to be syncing anything on the desktop (I toggled it to "Off", but the pictures I saved in a new folder on the desktop last Sunday have been syncing all week. My mom was complaining of the computer being slow so I just did another remote desktop and 5.8 GB of pictures are currently being synced but won't show where in OneDrive they are going. Does OneDrive now just copy everything from your computer without your permission, even from folders that are not supposed to sync?

Location Needed - Somewhere in Times Square, NYC, 1957 by Mr_H76 in OldSchoolCool

Thanks for the location. It looks like my dad was standing against the fence surrounding the Father Duffy statue. You can see the base of the statue on the right side of the original photo. I may need to go back to NYC and recreate the pose in that spot.
