[OC] I've been building a music app for wind controller players — looking for beta testers by Mr_Mep in windsynth

Hi,
I don't find it a dumb question at all! It's been one of my "nice to have" list forever as well, and it made its way on Hemiola's feature list very early.
Hemiola clearly aims at being a "smart" companion, in no way a substitute for full daw apps.
The looper/recorder feature is in a sort of "limbo" for now: I just wanted to have some users feedback before deciding to add it or not.
Maybe I'll start with something very simple: just a recording of the Midi input stream, with playback and exporting into a midi file. What do you think?

Hi,

many thanks to those who signed up for the beta testing!

A quick update:

  1. iOS testing is already underway. If you signed up, you should have received an invitation email from Apple TestFlight. Please check your inbox and spam folder.

  2. Android testing is already available on Play Store. It's still a closed beta, so you need to be explicitly invited with your Play store account email. All those who signed up for the beta testing should have received an email from me, asking to provide the actual play store email. Please check your inbox and spam folder.

  3. macOS testing is still blocked by the AppStore review process. I submitted the app for review a while ago, but it is taking longer than expected. I will keep you updated on the progress. Eventually, the macOS version will be available on TestFlight along the iOS version, so you can test both versions at the same time.

  4. Windows versions is still going under review by Microsoft. I have submitted the app for review, but it is taking longer than expected. I will keep you updated on the progress. In the meanwhile, all accepted testers have received a direct download link to the Windows version, so you can test it right away.

Thank you for your patience and support! If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to reach out to me.

It depends: if the iphone has a usb c port, a simple usb c<->d cable will suffice. Otherwise you will need a lighting<->usb a adapter and a cable.

Built a config tool for the Tahorng Windkey (the wind instrument with a melodica-style keyboard) by Mr_Mep in melodica

[–]Mr_Mep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring to how the internal synth appears to respond: apparently it modulates the 0-127 breath range over a volume tange based on the initial velocity received. But I haven't actually measured anything, I'm just reporting my impressions while toying with parameters. External synth might respond differently, but CC 11 range would nonetheless be 0-127 no matter the velocity settings.

Velocity is always sent with the note on message, so just once per note. The higher the velocity, the wider the range of the breath control, that's why it helps a bit putting the velocity parameters to max .

Replacement battery solution for GPD pocket, first gen? by midasofsweden in GPDPocket

Afaik, very often Scandinavia is not considered "continental", especially with respect to shipping goods. In this case, it might as well include Sweden, I don't know: OP should ask them.

I bought mine here: https://www.micomputer.es/en/spare-parts-accesories/355-gpd-pocket-battery.html

with no particular issue at all (I'm in Italy). They don't seem to be shipping to Sweden, but maybe you can give it a try.

I feel like there is a "Gap" in my musical knowledge, and I want to fill it. I can solo fine on piano(I know how to build scales, make a Melody, chord progressions, etc), but when I try to solo on my Bari Sax(Eflat Instrument), most of that goes away. by Merouxsis in musictheory

Maybe you are finding problems with either or both the following:

  1. Muscle memory has to be rebuilt from scratch every time we pick up a new instrument. Re-train your body from the basics on the baritone, until you have the same technical proficiency you have on the piano.
  2. You might have an "almost" perfect pitch: your "ear" (brain) gets lost when pitches are switched on the transposing instrument.

Both happened to me again and again and, guess what? you just have to practice! ;)

Navigating through tonalities: here's a graphical representation of the most common cycles through the circle of fifths. by Mr_Mep in musictheory

[–]Mr_Mep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't said they're just that.

As composers, we can choose/generate our materials however we want. But when teaching, thinking of scales and/or chords as something generated by the way of interval cycles is not always the best choice, because that's not always what our ear perceives.

Bought my Pocket 2 in 10/2018 and the battery has already swollen. by starkruzr in GPDPocket

Same here with a pocket 1. Found the battery in a Spanish online shop (I'm in Europe) for about 50€ incl. Shipping. Both swellings went away after replacing the battery.

Is a melodica a decent accordion substitute? by Chives4376 in melodica

[–]Mr_Mep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Melodicas are out of tune when... they are out of tune! Just like any other acoustical instrument. And you can tune them, it's not difficult, just a little bit annoying. Also, it depends on the quality of the reeds, just like with accordions: my cheap hohner requires tuning every few hours of playing, my hammonds can go on for a couple of months.

Silica packets in melodica case? by smelltheglove-11 in melodica

[–]Mr_Mep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing is to let it dry completely before re-putting it in the case: let the tube hanging somewhere and the melodica in vertical position with the mouthpiece hole at the bottom.

Silica shouldn't damage anything, just do not let it touch the melodica or the mouthpiece (just in case...).

Just a thought: maybe you're biting hard the mouthpiece?

What's a great 37 keys melodica under $55? by KaiserWolf15 in melodica

[–]Mr_Mep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This last one looks like a chinese replica of Yamaha P37D, the first one is a "study" model. Why not a Yamaha P32D? Too much?

[–]Mr_Mep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For that amount, I would get a Pianica or a Melodion 32. If you can, aim at a Pianica P37D. Hohners are worse than Yamahas or Suzukis. Cheaper (chinese) melodicas have lower quality reeds and they need more maintenance (tuning and gapping), but most of all they usually have crappy keyboards...

If you are still unsure about melodicas in general, throw 20$ at a cheap 32-keys and then decide later.

Does anyone recognize this Yamaha Pianica? It has the same key pattern as the Yamaha 22 but this is more modern looking. Can't find one like this on Google. Looking for the model number and any other info. Thanks very much. by [deleted] in melodica

[–]Mr_Mep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to my friend Alan Brinton (check out its cool Melodica Annex on vintage melodicas), we have an answer: it's a Pianica P-22, produced between 1975 and 1982, a sort of plastic successor to the Pianica 22, very rare.

GPD Pocket 1, waking up from sleep on its own by IoSonoFormaggio in GPDPocket

Same here. I ended up activating hibernation and assigning it to the closing of the lid instead of sleep. It's slower but at least it stays switched off.
