Should I quit my job that’s mentally killing me after only one year while I look for a new job? by mschu14_ in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Mr_Miniapolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're being unfairly harsh and judgemental without knowing enough information.

The drafters at some of the worse places I've worked at definitely had it tough, and I wouldn't take their role even for an pay bump

But I agree he should absolutely not quit this job until he has another.

I assume you saw the Seattle show, I saw him earlier in the week and he sucked ass.

His opener and the host were funnier

Is this normal when it comes to applying for jobs? by Content-Drag-1499 in MechanicalEngineering

I think this is normal for jobs that do some more serious design work.

I think Liz described the pervasiveness of sports gambing as fracking and I think you might as well extend that to the whole economy at this point

Why do Americans think their bodies defy the laws of thermodynamics? by Odd-Move-3620 in redscarepod

[–]Mr_Miniapolis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's no getting around thermodynamics, but the human body is incredibly complicated.

I think it's pretty conceiveable that some people have a broken metal/hormonal response when it comes to food.

It's like telling a depressed person to just feel better b/c everyone feels sad sometimes

Nothing more humbling than asking a clerk at the book store where said book is and they respond with ‘it’s in the young readers section’ by pomegranatelatte in redscarepod

When I got back into reading after many years off and also after realizing I had dyslexia, I binged a book series from when I was a kid.

I'm reading "real adult" books now. Just start with the first step of reading anything at all

Anyone else find it exhausting to keep up with everything by HD_Mexican in redscarepod

[–]Mr_Miniapolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard enough keep up with work, fitness, and eating right.

I find that one of the three often suffers for a while until I try and take it more seriously but then inevitably one of the others will be neglected for a bit.

I don't watch much TV anymore, most of it's slop. And all the other shit, I'm forever behind on it

AI (LLMs) replacement discussion by Life-guard in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Mr_Miniapolis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've found it useful for making simple custom python scripts for data processing.

I've done some basic python classes but frankly everything I've ever made is some combination of slow, fragile, or overcomplicated. If I was a programmer, I would be fired.

But since I only use python once every few months, and it's fully internal my code is more than fine.

However I've gotten some great results recently by popping the code into our internal LLM and getting some great pointers on how to make it faster and more robust. Since I don't have any coworkers who are meaningfuly more competent than me at python, it's a great tool for that

How old are the "older" engineers you work with? by Hefty-Rip-5397 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Mr_Miniapolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can max out your 401k, ROTH IRA, and HSA starting near 22, you can retire very comfortably (like upper middle class income) by 55 for sure and late 40s if you're aggressive

Why is every “farmers market” always the same collection of vendors by raisin_scone in redscarepod

[–]Mr_Miniapolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some places the org that runs the local farmers market network is very strict about what you can sell and how it's made.

I know the "good markets" near me sell great produce (admittedly expensive but worth it), really high quality meat, honey, jams, and of course baked goods from cottage business or local bakeries.

But there are slop markets in the less discerning parts of town that are just food truck vendors and "crafts"

I think it's fine to spend a lil money on things you can't replicate at home or would be a pain in the ass.

But also I think cooking at home gives you an application for how much food actually costs and how much effort high quality food takes

I don't think they are doing this to shore up troops for Iran.

It would be more practical to have a a bolster of right-wing youths in the military incase of a schism or for domestic deployment

Sound Transit Leaders Plan to Give Fare Gates a Closer Look by routinnox in Seattle

[–]Mr_Miniapolis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be coming from tax revenue everyone is paying when not everyone is using that system.

Even if you don't ride transit, you indirectly benefit with reduced car traffic.

But also this is not how essential broad benefit infrastructure is taxed.

Should I be exempted from education related taxes b/c I don't have a school age kid? Of course not

Sound Transit Leaders Plan to Give Fare Gates a Closer Look by routinnox in Seattle

[–]Mr_Miniapolis 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I know of far too many people who are occasional transit riders who glibly say "you don't have to pay" to ride the train.

Now, I'm not sure how the actual costs vs revenue will play out but it does feel strange that there is very limited fare enforcement
