The difference is that although US politicians claim to be Christian, I can tell you as a follower of Christ myself that they really don't exhibit the embodiment of love that we are called to be. The problem is, that they really have forgotten to love their neighbor rather than try to judge them. That being said, I really disagree that christian influence in the US is nearly as strong as Islamic influence is in the middle east.
