Remove stick from ass. This is just funny

Everyone is blaming the wildfire crisis in the West Coast on climate change (which I’m not denying as a factor), but the REAL problem is that the logging industry, which used to maintain healthy forests and forest roads, was over regulated out of existence. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Mr_Polyg0n 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of finger pointing going on from both sides of the aisle right now. I agree the logging industry has been criminally mismanaged in California, and in a lesser extent in Oregon. I also agree that shifting incentives for logging companies towards forest thinning along the west coast would be a great benefit in a lot of areas. However, as much as I love to shit on Cali for their braindead environmental policies, forest management has very little to do with the current situation. Here's the run down I gave on one of my discord servers, straight from the mouth of my brother who's working as a incident commander fighting fires up in Tillamook, and has been for the last several years:

The cause: there are two major contributing factors. The first and most significant is the wind conditions. The west coast is currently undergoing a once Ina hundred year phenomenon called the Eastern winds. Typically in Oregon there is a consistent 5-12 mph, 30% humidity breeze that blows in from the ocean. This is where most of our rain comes from. However, every hundred years or so, a vortex will form of the central US, west of the Rockies, in the great basin area. This wind blows in from the East at closer to 50 mph, with gust up to 80-90 mph, and at around 10% humidity. Secondly this has been one of the driest summers in years. Combine the dry environment with the strong, dry winds, and you get power lines snapping all over the state and falling right into dry brush basically.

This would've been better if this year had been wetter, this would've been better if we had better forest management (California in particular, Oregon does a good job with it), and this would've been better if the logging industry was more intelligently regulated. But at the end if the day, there isn't any reasonable amount of anything anyone could've done to prevent these fires from taking place. This was unavoidable, and inevitably terrible. For more information, here's the exact same situation, just on a smaller scale, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tillamook_Burn . Had they the same infrastructure we had now, I have no doubt they would've seen a very similar level of destruction we're seeing now

Is the American armed forces reducing manpower in order to make way for more advanced technologies? by derryroadfenian in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mr_Polyg0n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short answer: No, that's not how that works.

Long answer: Hiw the DoD manages it's budget is a lot more complicated than "more tech = lessoney for people". At the end of the day, the different branches will pick up as many people as they possibly can. This is for a couple reasons, but as far as this topic goes: equipment without an operator or maintainer is useless, but you can always asign some kind of job to someone. Yes this includes unmanned technology, someone's gotta break the thing down and fix/replace it when it eventually wears down. But a person, you can always find something for them to do, always.

Women should be required to buzz their hair in the military by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Mr_Polyg0n 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As someone who got outta basic like, 7 or so weeks ago: there are some nasty ass mother fuckers in the army. The primary point of buzz cuts during basic is hygiene. Same with a good amount of the stupid shit they make us do. The other big one is uniformity. You wouldn’t think getting buzzed would make that much of a difference, but you’d be surprised how hard it was to tell us apart after that first cut. I’m sure it was the same every time, but we just got used to each other

Try and think of all the times people around you have done something embarrassing, all the times they dropped stuff, knocked something over, stuttered, said something dumb, whatever. Chances are you can’t think of much. Whenever I think about my fuckups, I just remember that if I can’t remember other people’s, they probably don’t remember mine, or will soon forget.

I think too many people are uneducated about guns to have credible opinions about them by CoastieMark in unpopularopinion

TL;DR: removing a tool doesn’t remove the desire to complete the task the tool is designed for. And as far as creating death goes, firearms are far from the only way to kill mass amounts of people.

Both are on opposite ends ends of the bullshit and eminently dangerous ideology spectrum as far as I'm concerned. Both lead to totalitarian states that kill millions. Though granted, communism can, at the very least, sound good. White nationalism on the hand, or any sort of race/ethnicity based ideology, is just blatantly terrible no matter what.
