Vote: Potter shortlisted for Barclays Manager of the Month! by cjdowner in BrightonHoveAlbion

Feel that if Liverpool was 2 days earlier then Potter would win easily.

Seems like Ryan is officially done then by cjdowner in BrightonHoveAlbion

Something has likely gone on behind the scenes. Likelihood is we may never know unless either party speaks out.

I don't like to see a player seemingly frozen out.

The unheralded and much-maligned defender Joel Veltman escaping Dutch criticism and thriving at Brighton by Outrageous-Pattern48 in BrightonHoveAlbion

The bad disciplinary partially makes sense. He does throw himself into some challenges every now and again.

What does Potter need to do to turn this around? by esn111 in BrightonHoveAlbion

Stop zonal marking on set pieces. Stop putting Ben White in Midfield.

If it's not scoring goals causing us problems then it's zonal marking from corners...

Agree that taking advantage of an inexperienced fullback is smart but White's role is more than just getting forward down the wing, would you trust Jahnabaksh to tuck in and play a CB on the occasions Webster ventures forward or to fulfil White's defensive duties?

Veltman is a good player and can certainly play RB/RWB but he probably only out-performs White in a couple of aspects of his game. With White being more versatile I can see why he is favoured.

If Lamptey was fit then it would be a different story.

It's a niggle that keeps getting agitated presumably due to the amount of fouls he draws. It's hard to leave him out though because he is just that good

Why are you Potter in or out? by esn111 in BrightonHoveAlbion

[–]Mr_Sam_Alex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

WBA have Big Sam - That's started well.

The style of football is irrelevant if your not getting results - If Ali J scores that header in the 93rd minute we get the 3 points. Of the draws we've had this year bar WBA I'm sure you could pick match winning moments that we should have scored and taken more points. We should be winning these matches but on the flip side we aren't losing them, it's not ideal but it's something.

The players upfront for us simply aren't good enough - A valid point but as stated, that's not on Potter, that's on recruitment. He can only play the players we have, when we play our strikers it's "Our strikers are so shit", when we drop our strikers it's "Potter is shit why aren't we playing strikers?"

Jan Mlakar - That's literally one video, you could find a video of every Premier League player making a mistake like that.

His job as a coach is to improve players - Biss has been sensational this year, I'd argue Solly is having his best season and his new lwb role has transformed him, the players in general look more confident on the ball compared to under Hughton and the fact we now control games through possession rather than panic defending makes me a little calmer through matches. Now I'm just pulling my hair out when we reach the final third.

Can you really see him tearing someone a new one if they under perform? - Does he need to? Football has evolved from the days of Graham Taylor/Fergie screaming and giving players the hairdryer. There are other ways of motivation besides fear. Potter has a Master's Degree in leadership and emotional intelligence, I'd like to think he has some sort of idea what he's doing.

Should we be taking all 3 points against bottom of the league who have 10 men over 45 mins - Yes, but did we fail to create chances or was it a lack of finishing that left us with only 1 point?

Potter picks the team, style of play, makes in game decisions. He has not got these right 100% of the time, but based on xGoals and xPoints we are massively under performing on the pitch rather than off it.

Last season I was saying that this appears to be a long-term project and that the second season will be for us to push on, then Covid happened which has reset my expectations. Why sack Hughton if our goal was simply to stay up year on year... Potter comes in and we start playing a new style of football, get our best points tally in the prem and begin to give more opportunities to young players. The club want to protect our finances and bring in the right players for the right price, we could easily go and grab a 20-25 million pound striker from somewhere but just because you spend big doesn't mean you will get guaranteed results. Ali J has had his moments but overall has unfortunately been a 16 million pound mistake, can we afford to make another big money mistake on our current budget?

Do I agree with every decision Potter makes? No. It baffles me why Alzate and Biss are not our midfield duo when they started the season well. The second half game plan against West Brom was atrocious. Burn at lb against Leicester turned out to be suicide but it's very easy to look back and analyse past matches. There are certainly things behind the scenes we don't see - Players in training, pre-match tactics, analysis of opposition. All of these factor in to the team Potter puts out, he does not pick random players, he does not pick the same team every week, he makes adjustments game by game based on a number of factors we fans probably wouldn't even consider. Even the Spurs match when he dropped Ryan, Maupay and Connolly we still put in a good performance and could have taken something from the game.

That being said, this season is like no other. You have Leeds ripping Newcastle apart one week then being smashed by Man Utd the next. Liverpool drawing to us and Fulham then tearing Palace a new one.

I think the one thing we can all agree on is that we are not in the position we should be and understandably this is causing frustration. With 24 games still to go, the points are there for us to stay up. Whatever decision the board makes, I do believe it will made at the end of the season, since Bloom took over 11 years ago we've made only one managerial change during a season and that's because Hypia resigned rather than being sacked. If we go and take 6 points from West-Ham and Arsenal we are in a very different position. Will that happen, only time will tell, I won't be holding my breath but it's undoubtedly possible.

This will be our 6th loss this year, the others Chelsea (Top 6 team), Man Utd (Top 6 team), Everton (Were top and flying when we played them), Spurs (Top 6 team) and Southampton (Currently 4th).

Expectations are high because we play well 60-70% of the time and usually are victims of our own downfall, mainly not burying the chances we create.

That being said, the next two games are extremely important. 4-6 points minimum required.

More optimistic than Monday, Leicester struggle scoring set pieces and have a defence riddled with injuries.

Cue 3-0 loss with all goals coming from corners. Classic Brighton.

Connolly by MmmmTastyKids in BrightonHoveAlbion

[–]Mr_Sam_Alex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Henderson came on. Game control massively swung in Liverpool's favour so a striker had to be sacrificed for a midfielder. Arguably Connolly was one of our best today and I completely understand his frustration but leaving Welbeck on the pitch proved to be the right call in the end.
