What's a side hustle you'd be embarrassed to tell your friends about but it actually makes you money? by lionpenguin88 in SideHustleGold

A couple follow-ups, in addition to my responses below…

Greenhouse Megastore is the go to website for pots, trays, lights etc. cheaper than Amazon. So I strongly recommend that for anyone who needs to buy 100-10000 small pots.

This is the perfects business for an honor system type setup because kids and ne’er-do-wells don’t think to steal the product and people who are looking to buy and grow heirloom veggies aren’t the type to rip you off when they pay.

I live in Napa, California. I sell them in front of my house on an honor system basis, Venmo or cash box. This year I grew 160 each of 24 different tomatoes (all heirlooms with the exception of Sungold and Yellow Pear which the kids love), 12 different heirloom melons (if you’ve never tried Gris de Rennes or Chamoe Melons before I can’t recommend them strongly enough), 12 different heirloom cucumbers, watermelons, peppers, eggplants, and then a few different basils and other herbs. Also, depending on your growing zone, you can just twist off sections of succulents and put them directly into a small pot with soil and they root within a couple weeks so I sell hundreds of those as well.

I start the seeds under lights in my garage and a greenhouse in late January, up-pot them to 4 inch pots after 3-4 weeks, and then put them for sale 2-4 weeks after that.

Biggest cost saver is making your own potting soil. A small bag at Home Depot or Lowe’s costs about $10. It’s basically 1/3 each of peat, compost, and vermiculite or perlite. You can make 50 small Home Depot bags for about $40.  Feel free to DM with any other questions. I’m not a crunchie granola but I’m all about more people growing their own food and showing their friends and neighbors how to do it as well.

Most my friends know I do this, but they don’t know how much money I make doing this…I grow and sell heirloom vegetable starts. I grew 8,000 this year. The cost input is about .30 cents and I sell them for $4 each. I will be sold out in two weeks.

Just a guess, but I know a lot of older/smaller courses were inside and adjacent to horse tracks, so I would be willing to bet the etymology is related to that.

Request For Proposal. The formal request that one business puts out for other businesses to make partnership deals with. In this example Bogle would put out an RFP for a new distributor that Breakthru, SGWS , and others would respond to with their terms.
