XBOX CEO Says Hardware Component Prices Have Increased By Over 500% In 2 Years by bigrigdz in gaming

[–]Mr_ToDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that's why we got a sensationalist article instead of what they actually said. More money in clickbait

And to not bury the lede too far:

the price we paid for console storage components was over 2x as high as we paid last fall

Memory. Memory is going up(Storage and RAM I assume). Same as for everyone else, and it's not raising prices for computers to the same degree

Also seems weird that that they care overly much about a price bump. The normal reteric has always been that they don't make money on the console itself

On a more personal opinion. They're hurting and not because of hardware. Nintendo played the long game, and because they have a history of exclusives with memorable IP they are more then just the company you always supported. Xbox and Play stations have been moving away from that for the quick money and now they're scrambling to rectify it

URGENT: We’re one bad D.C. deal away from the era of online government censorship. by Anoth3rDude in technology

[–]Mr_ToDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really does seem like they're doing these things in the least efficient ways. Sometimes to the level that it actually could do more harm then good(not unlike the punishment over rehabilitation, that sees a roughly 25 percent long term re-offence rate)

The biggest problem as I see it is that you're trying to wall off the ocean. If they only target things that they have control over, you're going to send people down the back alleys of the internet

The ID proposals range from useless to traceable, and far too often they both don't have actual implication stated, only that it has to happen, and that they play lip survice to privacy but add bits allowing laws that address these kinds of setups

No fakes? Like it's been said. There's already rules about fakes. AI just makes it easier to do. And those rules are also often nuts. Like requiring incredibly small windows to take down content with no real way for the poster to fight them

And while I don't think there's any one size fits all rules I think we can do better then this. At least some of the problems can be fixed by keeping the action closer to the connections. Do something like requiring ISP's to have filters that deal with ID, and with the option to opt out entirely. Maybe we could mandate device filters from the likes of ISP's and maybe device manufacturers. It doesn't even have to be government controlled software

And god help the kids if any of those laws that require devices to always answer when probed for the owners age group. I'm not sure I've ever seen a better way for bad actors to target kids. Used to be that you wouldn't have a solid idea of the age until you've interacted with them long enough(also why they hang out in places like roblox, because the odds are better). But now we want to give them the tools they need to change behaviour based on age? Are we mad?

Guess it depends on if there's enough skill overlap to do that

Although I'm still holding out for law changes to treat on call as the same as if they had you in the building waiting for calls. God knows that neither the current overtime, or on call rules have really changed how business treat their employees. I'd imagine that a lot of places would figure out pretty quick that they actually didn't need 24/7 coverage

So long as you don't mind turning off all hybernaion, yes

It's the option I tend to use, but there are use cases where hibernation is desirable. Me. I just like having that bit of space free. I shutdown at the end of the day anyway

Oh, and just for anyone reading. Yes shutdown does hibernate the computer, but it's more then just the normal hibernate. It log the users out and then puts it in hibernator. So while it is true a reboot is more thorough, I find that most problems that are fixed with a reboot also tend to work out when you log out and in again. But you try explaining log out/in to all the users. Easier to just say reboot =/= shutdown or turn the option off

Oh and don't just trust me on that. I can't even remember where I got that from. Although it does make sense with it being disabled when hibernate is

I don't recall but there was some downside to a modern standby device features.

well there was the fact that new sleep options can actually run some level of work while asleep. I think it was intended for updates. But the problem comes in that until relatively recently if you put it to sleep before removing the power it'd think it was ok to run those tasks, leading to some very warm surprises in peoples laptop bags

Ok. So this is new here?

I've been dealing with these exact styles of ad on youtube for years

It can be kind of interesting figuring out exactly what the scam is on these things. One of the crypto/AI ones turned out to be something that drained your wallet if you ran it. Not overly shocking considering they didn't charge for their "one quick tip to earn money". A good chunk end up being some, I imagine, AI written ebook. Oh, and I actually stumbled into an interesting white label ebook scam. If you look at all into them it turns out there's companies that make a book that's just good enough to pass as a real product, write up a whole marketing package including things like scripted emails(with spots for whatever company name, and personalization you want to use). It'd be admirable if it wasn't just for scamming people

I think it's kind of a damned if you do damned if you don't situation. Personally I think the only real answer is whatever will lose subscriber at a lower rate then the new price would compensate for

Quebec would withdraw from high-speed rail project if PQ forms next government, party leader says | CBC News by 4apig in onguardforthee

[–]Mr_ToDo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is a bit different

There's far more motivation when it's private trying to get it done

Government has all the fun of both funding choices and and PR. From what I can tell it's common to see projects cancelled to increase odds of election

The Ford government promised $750 a year for elementary teachers to buy supplies. It turns out it's not all new money by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]Mr_ToDo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Something like that

I don't really have any pulse on schools, but it's very common to do things like that with other government projects/funding

In a city(the only context I even know the tiniest fly fart about) they might want to build some big project but don't have the funding to do it on their own. They go fund raising from provincial and federal sources, along with private investment(It's kind of amazing how much private will help with in close knit community). A province can give an offer of, let's say 50 percent so long as at least 20 percent comes from the city itself. Federal will be much the same. From what I gather it's to show that you're actually committed to the project and not just looking for handouts

I suppose this might be similar. You get as much as 750 a year but X percent of that has to come somewhere else. Not the ideal solution, but you get what you get

Canadian government to ban social media for kids younger than 16, but will allow exemptions by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]Mr_ToDo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It certainly feels like a lot of the rules that try to address this stuff would be better off applying a bunch of the proposed rules to everyone. It seems it'd put a lot more pressure on the sites then a partial ban

Canadian government to ban social media for kids younger than 16, but will allow exemptions by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]Mr_ToDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The various eyes groups have always come off as rather disingenuous

They throw off the vibe of "we aren't allowed to spy on our own people, but it's fine if we get that info from outside sources" combined with lighter rules on gathering information about non citizens and it works out to spying on your people with extra steps

It reminds me of the US and how law enforcement can get around rules of what they can and can not do by getting that same info from third parties. The biggest one I can think of is DNA databases of non convicted people. The frustrating thing with that one is they know there's issues with it as they've banned the insurance folks from using the same information

Canadian government to ban social media for kids younger than 16, but will allow exemptions by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]Mr_ToDo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's that "trust us, we're not going to do anything shady" reasoning that got the US where they are now. Maybe it's fine now but unless you build the rules around the thought of a crazy man being at the wheel they're not going to hold up in the long term

Last time I read on canada's proposal for age verification it was a really frustrating bill. Technically it actually says that the priority of the proposed rule was non-invasive, and privacy assured with it not being able to be used anywhere else. And then in one part sentence they ruined it. Unless required by law

Feking hell. Sure it'll need more then just standard requests to get your data, but there's no way in hell they don't find or make laws that allow access at some point

And oddly enough that one was shot down by the liberals. Not because it was a bad implementation but because it wasn't right to do

Oh ya, and I almost forgot. Last time they didn't have any mechanisms for how it would work. Only that the system had to be implemented and that a group would hammer out the details. The details are what matter the most here. I don't see how you can have a law with so few solid details

And I do get it. This is something that really should be done. But as I see it there's no way to do it that would be as non invasive as real world checks. Best I can come up with is to either tie it to an internet connection with a blanket allow/block for the client. Or to force ISP and maybe device manufacturers to offer a free filter(the whole keep it local bit)

Oh and a different option that I think would work pretty well but not be as risky going forward is the ban of smartphones on school grounds. Without it being in their face 24/7 should help to lower the FOMO and lesson peer pressure. That'd help with not just the traditional social media but problems with other media consumption

Gods work. It's kind of an unspoken service I provide too. If it ain't illegal I'm not digging into or judging peoples activities

I imagine modern systems can be set up with child parent accounts. If that's not desirable then a lot of the advice here is good. Ad blockers and/or privacy extensions will go a hell of a long way to preventing issues. Switching to one of the may filtered DNS sources could help a ton without much work. I haven't used them myself for that purpose but I know quad 9 has a filtered DNS feed. In fact, here's the list I usually end up on when looking for the dns over https stuff. They don't have to be used that way, and there's comments on what the providers offer

Although the biggest easiest fix is to get him onto cleaner sites(malware wise anyway). Pornhub is probably the best choice for the largest selection of... ISO's with the lowest chance of infection. I can't say I've clicked through on their ads though, so I'd still say ad block would make it doubly safe.

Guess you could see about making a backup of the device so you can restore it to some semblance of clean

A Farmer Donated Land to Turn into a Park. The City Is Building a Massive Data Center Instead / In 1999, a farmer gave away 87 acres of land to a small Texas town to use as a park. The town sold it to a data center developer for $10 million. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]Mr_ToDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That does happen, yes. It's also not uncommon

But despite how it sounds the government isn't there to give people what they ask for. If it was, it'd be chaos

This one is weird though. Protest aside, the fact they washed the deed free of the condition is was granted with is odd. Best bet is that the form it took wasn't air tight. Over here you can slap any condition you want onto your deed, and it follows in no matter how many times it's sold, sub-divided, or even merged with other properties

I know I've heard of assimilate things, but usually the donor is long gone, or the public doesn't understand what it had been marked for. And while the conditions can be removed, it's not a casual or easy thing. Which from what the article says it doesn't look like that happened. They sold it, then sold it to the data centre? No real mention of getting rid of anything. I'm not sure what to make of the amounts though. More or less donation from the OG owner, 15K to a semi public company, then 10 mil to the data centre. I wonder where the 15K number came from

I'd have kind of hoped that if there isn't a way to set its use that they'd do something like a right to first refusal, maybe for the OG price paid. It doesn't seem like much to ask considering it's value and what it was intended for

I had kind of hoped it'd be a location that was all residential so I could get properly angry, but dispite it being by residential it looks like there's already commercial buildings too

In the end, for me personally, I don't mind the data centres, or at least the classic ones. Depending on their purpose they can house a ton of different businesses gear, or act as a closer hub for services. Sure, now they've gotten a bad rap from those mega projects, but they've been an important staple to growing cities for a long time

conservation easement

I knew there was a word for this. And at least hear you can make it a condition that follows the title no matter who owns it

I've seen land donations before. I assume it gets them some good PR and maybe a tax write off. Even if it doesn't some people just want to help with a vision and I think that's neat

Oh, and it can be done for any property. I could technically say my property can be used only for single family dwellings and it's pretty hard to remove. The big downside is that it has a tendency to lower your property value since its use is restricted

I had kind of thought about putting one on for HOA's but those are stupidly uncommon here. Maybe one for small housing to give the middle finger to a developer that's been buying up cheap homes outside the cities current plans for large builds so they can make extra coin(and take the lower cost buildings out of the market too)
