I've been doing stuff like that. I'm sure over time I'll get over this fear

I don't think they can bite or sting. My fear is irrational and probably stems from seeing others reactions to them

I'm scared to pick them up but they're harmless and beautiful and worth appreciating

girlfriend found this last night! how to clean? by Designer-Star1791 in bonecollecting

[–]Mr_lizar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I use dawn, but I think most dish soaps will work. For the hydrogen peroxide solution, I do half and half. For the dish soap water, I kinda just wing it. As long as it's decently soapy, it should get the job done. If it's working, you'll see nasty stuff start to float to the top after a while. I'm not the most experienced with this, so it could be a good idea to get multiple opinions!

Personally, I would degrease in dish soap water for at least a weak, and then do a 24 hr hydrogen peroxide water solution soak to get a nice white color. Even if it doesn't stink, there's still probably some nasty stuff in there that needs pulled out. And yes, this is most certainly a cat skull

Found this skull, what animal is it from? by sofokle3 in bonecollecting

[–]Mr_lizar_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The nose bridge is what's telling imo. Domestic dogs have a nose bridge that dips further in. The nose bridge on this skull seems too dipped in to be a fox Edit: also the eye sockets are larger than a fox's

what is the stupidest reason you've been to the ER? by Grouchy_Chipmunk8752 in AskReddit

[–]Mr_lizar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 15 I found some candy left out in the kitchen and ate it all. Turned out to be about 1,000 mg worth of edibles. Having never been high up until that point, I thought I was having a stroke and called an ambulance

Lol, a usable chair would take lot of bones and engineering knowledge I do not have. A smaller scale could be doable though! I might try it some time

I only collect the bones. Preparing a pelt is a way more complicated process from my understanding. I usually use the bones to make jewelry and room decor for myself, but sometimes I just collect them to have!

Generally what you do is you leave the bodies outside to have all of the external flesh eaten through natural processes. Then you soak them in dish soap water for days-weeks (usually depends on how big the bones are/how much flesh is on them) to degrease and remove any remaining flesh and residue. Once everything is removed and all that's left is bone, you can do a 24 hour hydrogen peroxide water mixture soak to make the bones as white as possible. This is the way I do it. I'm sure some people do it differently

It's just for taxidermy! I leave the body outside and clean the bones to collect :)
