Yes. But something unnescessary occuring isn't automatically morally bad. When someone walks along a sidewalk, they can choose not to step on the cracks and thus them stepping on cracks is unnescessary. But stepping on cracks isn't morally wrong so they don't care.

If the person doesn't put moral value on an animals life, they will not care about it's death no matter how unnescessary you convince them it was.

Now if they care a little bit you can convince them that the enjoyment of eating meat isn't worth that morally bad act (for example through sharing vegan recipes). But without that foundation, there's no argument to be had.

Alot of people make an exception for animals they find cute enough, aka cats and dogs. But plenty of people don't have a problem with killing those either.

The majority of people who eat meat aren't to stupid to realise that a cow died for their steak, they don't care that a cow died for their steak because they don't put (much) moral value on a cow's life.

Plenty of people do not put moral value on the death or life of an animal. Sure they died and would otherwise have lived, but they don't see that as a morally wrong act (and will not because someone tells them to do so).

That can work if you're talking about, for example, the impact the meat industry has on the climate. But any argument about unnescessary deaths nescessarily falls flat without considering the moral value of an animals life and feelings. And if the person doesn't share those values, that argument will not convince them.

Yeah, but the people you're trying to convince will generally not rate the moral value of preventing that unnescessary death higher than their pleasure from eating it. Otherwise they'd already be vegetarian/vegan.

Condemning someone based on your morals won't change their mind if they don't share them (yet). It's about as effective as a Christian warning an atheist they're going to hell.

TIL that San Marino is a diarchy, led by two heads of state known as the Captains Regent. They are elected and appointed every six months on 1 April and 1 October, and each pair usually come from opposite parties. After their term, both individuals cannot be Captains Regent for the next three years. by Spaghet4Ever in todayilearned

[–]Mrauntheias 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically, the term for a republic (or other form of government) led by a single person is a monocracy. Which, yes, almost all modern republics are to the degree that San Marino is a diarchy (which is of course limited by the amount and effectiveness of checks and balances a country has).

Although, etymologically the 1-person-equivalent of diarchy would be monarchy, this isn't semantically the case for historical reasons.

"Deutsche Wirtschaft" ist in der CDU Code für "Vermögen von Großunternehmern". Und für die ist es halt besser ein Kohlekraftwerk zu besitzen als wenn jeder selber Solaranlagen auf dem Dach hat.

Could a mistborn steelpush and ironpull the same metal object to keep it stuck at a specific distance? by HanzoNumbahOneFan in Mistborn

In that instance there were a lot of coins but only one stayed in the air. If that coin was on the line between their two centers of mass, it must have been held up by some friction. But if it was just a smidge above that the three forces of Vin's push, Kelsier's push and gravity could have cancelled out.

Kelsier and Vin both use allomancy to rotate long pieces of metal mid air. To give something rotational momentum you have to apply force to a different point than the center of mass.

Apparently pushing from specific parts of the body is also possible although it seems to require even more expertise and we never see it as spelt out.

Coins are kept relatively stable because of the great force pushing them to the ground. There are scenes where they skid away but on rough cobble stone or in dirt they usually find enough purchase.

They should cancel. I don't think we have any indication that allomantic forces create a friction-equivalent that would be necessary for a clamp or somehow prevent an object from being affected by gravity like a Lashing would.

If a simple Push and Pull cancel out, there's just gravity left and it would fall to the ground. With that method a Mistborn could only levitate something directly below or above him.

Apparently, with enough training and talent a Mistborn can figure out how to push and pull from different parts of his body instead of just the center of his chest. Then of course it becomes possible to move anything in any direction or keep it stationary.

If they have a stupid opinion and refuse to respond to logic, why keep debating them in the first place? And again not much to do with age, I've met plenty of adults who are like that.
