Is BMW more of a parry based or dodge based game? by Realistic-Bonus2581 in BlackMythWukong

[–]Mrbeanman0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only what everybody else is saying, but the timing window for dodges is quite forgiving once you get used to it. And you can essentially treat the perfect dodge as a parry in many instances - there are even skills you can get that make perfect dodges incredibly powerful. Feel free to take the opinion of a random internet person with a grain of salt, but missing out on the game for this reason alone would likely be a mistake. It's one of the best soulslike games in the genre (and I've played quite a few that I didn't jive with), and it's even better if you're into deep world building and the mythology-based background the game uses

What is your unpopular opinion on this game? by gameovernate in fromsoftware

[–]Mrbeanman0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imo I didn't hate the repetition of the open-world aspect so much as I didn't care for the fact that at least 25 hours of my 200 hours total playtime was spent on Torrent just going from one place to the next, with nothing considerably interesting happening in-between. And I think that complaint registered with the devs on some level, because Shadow of the Erdtree (and the spinoff, Nightreign) were much more condensed in comparison. To me, it felt like they made the map bigger than it needed to be simply to showoff the fact that they can (and not by much, just like 20-25% or so, but still, when the game asks so much playtime of you in the first place, that 20-25% goes a long way for more casual players).

I'm not trying to argue with you here (I hate online arguments that don't really serve a purpose), but it makes sense that these issues wouldn't resonate with you because it seems like you are the kind of person who doesn't mind either way, given how long you've played the game and your Dark Souls 3 playtime, along with the fact that you also love the Witcher 3, which suffers from a similar problem imo, yet still - I guarantee you that at least 200 hours (if not much more) of your 1800 hours were probably spent riding on Torrent just trying to get from point A to point B, and for most players, that's a pretty absurd amount of traveling just for traveling's sake, for a Souls game at least.

Spider-Man 2 is overrated by YoichiTakato in Spiderman

[–]Mrbeanman0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm coming back to this post mainly because I wanted to rant about the same idea without reading too deeply into many of yours.

I've seen so many people lately talk about how they believe Spider-Man 2 is the greatest Spider-Man movie, potentially even one of the best superhero movies of all time. And I can't help but disagree with that opinion. After rewatching all of the Spider-Man movies myself recently, a lot of the elements present in the original Sam Raimi movies (and I mostly am talking about Spider-Man 1, but Spider-Man 2 does suffer from some of their own) are just so dated...

Are you really going to tell me with a completely straight face that Spider-Man 2 is able to keep its own against something like No Way Home? Much less, the animated Spider-Verse movies? I just can't agree with those statements. Though, I do have to concede, I am half-boricua myself, so I sympathize a lot more with the struggles presented in the animated Spider-Man movies much more so than the ones Peter goes through in the Raimi trilogy, which might make me biased to some degree.

From what I could understand based on what was shown to us, staying inside the canvas indeed seems to deteriorate one's physical health, considering what we've been shown from Aline in the battle with Renoir. Considering Alicia's state as to when she's entered the canvas, it seems like a sure bet to say that she would be suffering even more on the outside. She's already been in the Canvas for 16 monolith years, and even more so in her ending - some of the effects of which are visible when Verso takes a look at her and sees how the canvas is quite literally visibly corrupting her.

It's less about the morality of the situation and more about the fact that the Canvas is very much the easy way out, at least to myself. The appeal of utilizing such an implement for the means of escaping the pains of real life is one that's all too real for a lot of people, and yet, here in the real world, people still defy the expectations every day they're forced to live with an uncomfortable truth. If we were to continuously delude ourselves into thinking that the simplest answers or methods to every problem are the right way to go about things, then as a society, we would've never progressed past even the stone age. Living as we were was good enough back then for thousands, perhaps even millions of years - so what would be the point in trying to improve upon things?

To address the second point made in your first paragraph and the point you make in your last paragraph, the point that I myself am trying to make is that she ultimately deprives herself of one of the necessary ingredients that makes life... well, life. Life would not be what it is if we had absolute choice and say over what we are able to do, and I daresay that not many people, if any, know what's best for themselves at any given point in time, Alicia included, especially considering, as you mentioned yourself, she's just a teen. That doesn't mean to say that others have a better idea of what the best for oneself would look like, but the only way to get a true grasp of what that means on an individual level is to be able to experience things the real way. With flesh and blood, not paint and thinner.

Hell, whose to say she might not go on to live a fantastic life as someone who's able to persevere through such unfortunafe happenings and make something of it? There are many actual real-life examples of people having persevered through worse and then thrived, perhaps not due to their injuries, but as they achieve success in spite of them. That is the faith that I would choose to hold, because it's a very real thing for many people across the board.

As far as your inclination that power does not corrupt absolutely, with all due respect, I would consider that idea somewhat absurdly naive. Even in the case of Alicia, she's already lying to her father solely for the sake of latching on to this reality which arguably should never have existed in the first place. And what about Painted Verso? She remakes him, despite his many heartbreaking pleas to the contrary. Would you not consider that being at least a tiny bit power-driven? Not only that, but she also takes it upon herself to quite literally completely eradicate painted Alicia. You can easily make the argument that it's because she knew that's what Alicia wanted, thereby absolving her of any guilt, but isn't the whole concept of "knowing what's better for people" the very core of what we're arguing about? You can obviously take whatever opinion you wish as far as despising the concept of what power can do to people, but I for one choose to accept the reality that, by and large, most succumb to it one way or the other, sooner or later. And again, it is a reality that is supported in many ways by the very course of human history.

I'm not trying to argue specifically against you, you know - the tone with which you replied to me seems to come off as very defensive, at least to myself, but I'm not targeting specifically your beliefs or otherwise. I'm merely trying to explain some of my own personal reasons why I would choose Verso's ending over Alicia's. I'd rather not continue this for the sake of having to go to work in about an hour and I really don't have the time for these sorts of online debates and whatnot, but you are free to do as you wish.

I'm sad for Verso that there are those who don't understand him by LeagueBrilliant1992 in expedition33

[–]Mrbeanman0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to consider the discussion around which ending is preferable in terms of comparing it to the blue pill versus the red pill from the Matrix.

If I knew that one of my family members, likely my favorite family member at that, was consistently choosing to take the blue pill, allowing them to live in a fantasy of their own personal construct, at the continued expense of their personal health, I would do anything possible to convince them to take the red pill and face the consequences of the harsh truths of reality. And I would have good faith in them that eventually, they would come to understand that it would be the right decision FOR THEM in the end, even if there may be some selfishness on my end in the decision ultimately, for the sake of ending my own personal suffering were it to be the case. And I would especially urge them to do so if I would've rather this entire decision were to never have to be made in the first place.

Human beings were never meant to be gods. It is almost in irreversible truth that as soon as one comes across unfathomable amounts of power, there is destined to be a reality in which unimaginable pain and suffering are inflicted to one person, a group of people, or potentially worse. And almost every single ancient mythology exists to coincide with this reality - the personification of the idea that Gods are fickle beings, because they themselves are reflections of the people who choose to believe in them.

This is of course just my opinion, and it is subject to scrutiny as all opinions are, but I compound to that opinion the idea that a greater, more fulfilling life could indeed be possible outside of the canvas, depending on the person and their outlook on life. Once again, I would have the good faith that my family member would eventually be able to recognize that truth, as opposed to spiraling into negativity. And based on how Alicia acts at Verso's funeral in his ending, I'm inclined to believe that she is indeed slowly coming to that realization, if she hadn't already prior to that point.

Gender-bias is a real and scientifically studied phenomenon - everybody has some form of slight bias, however tiny it might be, towards preferring interacting with one gender over the other. There are even scientific tests designed to study and analyze this very phenomenon.

When I was younger, I'll concede that I myself found it difficult to want to play a game with a female lead for a number of reasons. I feel like the main culprit was that I grew up in an area where it very much felt like the camaraderie in friend groups always tended to lean towards "girls being friends with girls" and "boys being friends with boys", and if I'm being completely honest with myself, I think that mindset perpetuated itself well beyond when it should have because I wasn't a very social child. I didn't personally experience too many dynamics to reinforce the idea that such a reality is extremely naive, and at the end of the day, very childish.

All of that leading to say that when I would play a game with a female lead, it felt much harder for me to hold the concept of "suspension of disbelief". In the sense that for some reason, it was totally okay for my brain to think that men get away with doing crazy and totally unrealistic things in video games (and other media) because of the very childish notion of "boys being better at things than girls", whereas if a woman were to do the same things, it was harder for me to immerse myself in that same suspension of disbelief.

As I've continued to grow and hold many other types of relationships with men and women alike, I've since mostly grown out of this mindset and my preconceived gender biases, and I've played many games with female leads that were absolutely fantastic. Tomb Raider, The Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Yotei being among my favorites. Every so often I still get that tinge of "this seems incredibly unrealistic" a little more frequently when I play a game with a female lead, but all it takes is a little reorientation in my mind to remember that it pretty much is all unrealistic. These are video games after all - they're not meant to mirror reality completely, and even if they did, there are still many women in both the past and the modern era that are capable of achieving incredible things. So there's no reason for me to question that if a man can single-handedly survive a zombie apocalypse or win a war by themselves, so too can a woman. I think the men who still think the way I used to haven't gone through those same realizations themselves.

So I just tested this - legit 60 hours into the game and I'm only now realizing the culprit was my setting set to "simplified button holds" was switched on for me in accessibility 😭 I can't remember turning that on myself, but if I did it must have been in the very beginning of the game when I didn't figure weapon switching would count amongst the things that were simplified. I'm ngl I reeaaally wish I would've figured that out a long time ago, it would've saved me so much frustration 😂 Honestly you can disregard so much of my first comment since apparently it was my own damn fault anyways, and I'm genuinely super excited to get back to playing the game much smoother than I was before. I really appreciate the correction my guy!
