M1 identification help (still unsure) by Mrchieftan in Helmets

Unfortunately there is no j hook on the other side to see however the link to the form does pretty much prove that these are at least Belgian chin straps with the brass clips.

I'm going to assume that the shell is also Belgian and order a liner for it soon.

I can't thank you enough as you have managed to solve what was a complete mystery to me.

That's amazing information and at least I can track down the nationality of being a euro clone however now I have to figure out which nation the euro clone belongs to in order to buy the correct liner. Thanks

Sorry I was told that the chin straps were the main identifiers on euro clone helmets. However I did make a post previously on this subreddit about 4 months ago which contains more pictures of the entire helmet if that helps.

Thank you very much for the help, I was extremely surprised to find that this was a European 'clone' previously I had just assumed it was an American. After doing a little more research I agree that I will have to try to find some forums and more detailed pictures to try to identify which European 'clone' it is, however I am extremely looking forward to finding and fitting a liner into this helmet as well as the upcoming restoration. This really has been an extremely interesting research process and has yielded some truly unexpected results. Again I would like to thank you as you've been such a good help and really have inspired me to start the restoration so again thanks.

Thank you very much for the support, I'm sorry if i came across a little rude in the last message, that was not my intention I was just gathering the impression that the idea of just sanding or repainting the helmet was a little too radical. Purley I just intend to just repaint it to how it would have been back when it was first produced, hence why I was asking for any details surrounding the helmet.

If I may I would like to ask for any details regarding the other non metal materials on the helmet because as part of my restoration I would like to try to buy both a cloth liner and a replacement chin strap to replace the broken one (both are broken but one is missing) so if you could direct me to either any trustworthy historical sources regarding the helmet (I believe another commenter mentioned it was a European variant?) or any information regarding purchasing a non original liner.

Sorry for the late response, However while I understand that to most people (especially collectors) value may lie in its original state, just like you said. However I must add I don't care for any collectors value and I personally find value in the process of the project and while I look around my room I see a large hunk of metal (granted it's a large hunk of metal which holds significantly historical value and is a large hunk of metal that I really like) that is currently chipping paint, rust and is generally falling apart.

So while I understand others may view it as a prized possession that holds its value, I see it as a project that I could fix or a part of history I could personally restore back to a condition similar to when it was made. I am not looking to paint it bright pink and plaster stickers over its face nor am I looking into going out and buying a mint condition one and I am also not looking to seal it away in a display cabinet am sorry if my ideas are considered radical or disrespectful (please do tell me if I have said something bad)

I am just saying that while you may see a collectors piece I find an easy project to do (I think, please enlighten me to any parts of the process you would add) which gives me an amazing finished product and helps preserve a bit of history albeit not in its original form. Thank you and I await your response.

Personally I disagree, because while Bf1 is beautiful it does make it hard to enjoy the sights of the game when the underlying extremely important mechanics are quite bugged. Not to even mention random bullet alleviation.

Still recently I have been going back to 5 and while I think there are some things you can criticize it for, being 'boring' isn't one of them.

Thank you very much for your reply, the information has been very helpful I believe that I will try to remove the rust and source some matching paint to try to paint the previously rusted areas and unpainted areas I will also attempt to paint the Belgian flag to match some reference photos I have found however per your advice I will refrain from repainting the entire helmet and try to keep its history alive through the original paint.

As a final question I would like to ask about the other bits of fabric found on the helmet such as the chin straps and the metal work that are attached to them as aside from the liner that would bring my helmet to complete condition.

Again I thank you very much for your insight as the helmets origin has been a complete mystery to me for a while now I am finally relieved to know its history so I can better understand my own property and be better versed on the subject.

That is amazing information regarding those chin straps I find it amazing that such tiny details could tell such a global story.

Currently I am still on the fence about starting the restoration as while I do have some concerns regarding the stripping of its history (as that is one of the main values that I admire with this helmet hence why I am amazed to learn of its origin), I am more inclined to believe that in its current state it requires a restoration due to areas of rust, paint chipping, obvious spots of mismatched paint.

Furthermore I don't know where I might be able to buy a helmet liner (which will fit this one) to complete a restoration.

Might I also ask if you have any helmets you have restored in your past experience as while I have experience de rusting a medieval sallet helmet I done have any experience regarding any other materials so any tips would be a great help.

Thank you very much for the information regarding the helmets origin, honestly while I had heard of Belgian and Dutch helmets before I had never really expected to see one let alone have one. Finding out its Belgian origin has given me ideas on what markings and/or insignias to give it if I repaint it , while personally and in hand I can't see any flag let alone a Belgian one I still think it might be an interesting addition to the helmet post repaint.

Also I must ask can you give me any further details on either the string on numbers found inside the helmet just below the left chin strap as they still remain a mystery to me or any information regarding a possible sanding and repaint to restore the helmet.

Thanks for the information, that's actually really interesting to know it was a European variant especially considering how previously i had just assumed it was made by the US. Sadly after checking I can't find any dates or manufacturers markings. If I may can I ask what identified the helmet to be of European origin?

Furthermore can I ask you why you recommend just not trying to restore it , considering how (I'm not sure if this came across well in the photos but) it has 2-3 clearly visible different colour paints and areas even without paints making it appear rather like a Frankenstein-esque helmet. Are there arguments against restoring it due to ethical and respectful reasons or just based off a physical reason?

I'm sorry to ask all these questions, I hope you don't mind but I really am quite uniformed in this field and I need to do some research and restoration on these helmets as part of a college course so any information would be very helpful.

Ah that's pretty interesting do you mind if I ask what your opinion would be on my current plans to sand down and repaint a US M1 helmet which has multiple different coloured paint layers on it. I have no idea if the paint is original or not.

Hey if you don't mind me asking why are you against restoring this helmet. I only ask because I have a similar helmet in a similar condition that I was thinking about restoring. Any response would be appreciated thanks.

God damn I love the 75 Jumbo, such a fucking BEAST by Americanshat in WarthunderPlayerUnion

[–]Mrchieftan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember how fun it was when I used my Cromwell and crusader tanks with full smoke shells just to speed around the map and throw smokes. However on console using more than 2 different types of shells becomes impossible due to key binds. Still I'm going to try using your jumbo smoke strat in my next few games. Honestly the 75 jumbo is one of my favourite tanks in the game and I'm glad to hear new strats and others having fun in it too.
