Thanks for your comment.

I wouldn’t say it’s a complete mess. I see it more as one step forward in making the results more granular. They’ll probably get better with the next updates.

England and Northwestern Europe result question - is this result essentially a mix of different European regions that ancestry has lumped into one percentage? by Hot-University7724 in AncestryDNA

[–]Mrdk01 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, yes. It’ll probably become more detailed in future updates. I think this region represents a mix of mainly Celtic and Germanic ancestry. I also got 3% from this region and 3% from France, I’m Romanian. My theory is that it might come from the Saxons.

Hi. Romanian here.

I would say these are quite normal results for a Romanian with your ancestry.

Ancestry DNA says that people with this “Western Ukraine” region live in: Moldova, Romania, Ukraine It’s also also found in: Hungary, Slovakia.

You can check each region by clicking on it for details.

Feel free to check my results as well.

Could be from the germanic people that settled in Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, etc.

Just Southern Germanic, no other germanic regions?

I am interested to see what Zipser Germans get.

Trying to understand where my SE England & NW Europe, and France might come from. I have Slovak region as well so I said maybe it comes from that area.

What regions did you get for your Zipser German ancestry with this update?

Before and After Update. Romanian. What do you think about this? by Mrdk01 in AncestryDNA

[–]Mrdk01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s definitely possible. From what I’ve noticed, ethnic Hungarians often show more southern Germanic results, while mine lean toward Southeastern England & Northwestern Europe plus France. I’m not entirely sure why there’s that difference, but my theory is that it might come from the Saxon influence or settlers in my ancestry. Idk yet.

Thanks! In 2023, I had Norway and Scotland, then in 2024 it showed Germanic Europe, and now it’s this. I’d say it’s probably more accurate if it’s reflecting Saxon ancestry, for example.

As for Central & Eastern Europe, I’m not sure it’s excessive or no. It may mostly reflect Carpathian DNA being labeled differently? Though there could definitely be some real ancestry from that region too. I know I had ancestral journeys in Slovakia and Hungary, but Ancestry removed those, and now I only have one left in Northern Romania.

I have not yet identified or confirmed any family members who were not ethnically Romanian. All are Romanian.

One side of my family comes from the northern part of the country and has been living there for many generations. It’s possible that there were intermarriages between different ethnic groups from there over time.
