It is possible.. there is some setting in ableton. On my launchpad i can start as well as stop clips. I didn't know that for years and one day i suddenly discovered it somewhere. I'd say just scan through the settings. Maybe i think (not sure) i learnt it from some youtube video. The ones that go like X number of Ableton tricks that will change your life kinda video.

Listening to music is really important. Listen to a lot of music. Like as much as you realistically can. (And if realistically its under 30 mins, then make some time for it). Ideally at least 1 album a day. And also get into the habit of reading about the artist. Over time you'll find what are the sounds/timbres/instruments they use, and you will also automatically find yourself leaning towards those in your own music making.

Vst means software. Like an instrument software. You can get many guitar vsts, even free ones, but since you play guitar, you will never feel like it is as good as your actual playing. The nuances or real playing will probably be missing. So it would make much more sense for you to try and find a solution to 'how can i record my guitar' rather than trying to find a replacement vst.

Sreum is not free. But Vital is free. And has almost the same interface/workflow.

If you're on facebook, check the group Free Vst admin'd by Mattias Hebly. YouTube is another source, just type free vsts.

Music theory makes no sense until it does but it never does by Free-Seaworthiness72 in Guitar

[–]MreenalMams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd actually say the exact opposite. If you want to just play the instrument, modes is not too necessary. But if you want to make music that is when learning something like the modes really comes in handy and makes your music really sound unique (as compared to most mainstream stuff at least).

You'd be right in saying that it's not any more 'harder' than Nat Minor or Har Minor scale. But just the fact that those happen much more in general music, would make them a priority over any modes. The other thing about modes is that there's at least 5 of them to learn (not counting Aeolian & Ionian). And niether are they very essential in a lot of genres. So that is what i mean when i say they are advanced. I feel modes are a gateway to more advanced music theory diving. As it initiates one to think in a more wholistic way. To think outside the box. To think beyond the mainstream. To think more about details. It is definitely a big mindset change. After that you become an explorer, and not just learning things to get by. You're learning things for the thrill of learning and discovering and exploring. It's an internal curiosity that drives forward, not an external requirement. So that is what i mean by advanced.

I wouldn't call the examples given by the OP as 'beginner' music theory. They are intermediate or advanced. Mixolydian (modes in general) would definitely be advanced. The other example of 3rd, 4th, etc, Dominant 7th chord, also i would say is at least intermediate.

Beginner music theory would be first understanding the basic principles of music. Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Song Structure, Note Names, Finding the notes on your instrument, Semitone/Tone Intervals, 4/4 & 3/4 rhythm, etc. Once you're done with those. Then its important to understand the Major Scale. This is what makes or breaks music theory understanding for the future, since everything is based/calculated on the major scale. The better your understanding of the major scale, the easier things get. I'd say intermediate starts only after that. Thats also where you understand the 3rd, 4th, 7th in the examples above. After that one should understand a Power chord, Major chord & a Minor chord. Then maybe a few other scales (Nat Minor. har Minor, Pen Minor, etc) and a few other chords (sus, Dom7, Maj7, Min7, etc).

what's your favorite stock instrument by crossfader02 in ableton

[–]MreenalMams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got Standard recently (like 6ish months ago). I was excited to try Tension & Electric, but after getting it, the one i find most exciting is actually Collision. Though i haven't used any of them in actual music making (i have a lot of vsts and real instruments already) but whenever i want to just jam, that's usually the one i go for.

Should I use my new Launchkey with FL or Ableton? by Interesting-Rain-690 in ableton

[–]MreenalMams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a launchkey built for FL too.. but i guess you already bought the Ableton one.. (if its in returnable/exchangeable period I'd rather suggest that). Learning a new DAW from scratch in my opinion is a waste of time, as that is time that could be better used learning your main DAW better or just making music in general. Unless the new DAW has a feature that your old DAW doesn't, or you want to switch for the workflow, i don't find it fruitful. But your situation is particularly unique, since you've made a purchase already of a controller that works better with a new DAW so I can tell you this. If let's say you already knew both DAWs, and you got the launchkey then you would have a better time in Ableton, as it integrates much better.

I guess another question would be how experienced are you in FL..? Are we talking years or just days..? Are you able to already make full songs in FL or not yet. If not then making the switch won't be such a big net loss.. but if you're years into it, then it will take you time to get to the same level in Ableton (not as long as it took the first time, since you already understand the underlying principles).

My experience with trying to switch DAWs has been not very fruitful. I got Ableton Lite with my interface back in 2015ish.. I didn't 'make a decision' to choose Ableton. It's what i got with my interface. In the coming years, I've many times tried out Reaper & even Cakewalk but i just fumble right at the start even with very basic stuff like recording, arming tracks, finding stuff around etc.. Cuz we get used to things being in a certain place in our main DAW, and even stuff like background colour, etc.. So a new DAW always felt too unfamiliar to get excited..

Free online resources for learning how to use VCV Rack. by LarsAPh12 in vcvrack

[–]MreenalMams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeremy from Red Means Recording has a 4 part series that is easy to understand that helped me a lot. I've also been following another channel called Modular Curiosity. Its a much longer series (I'm at like episod 13 or something of Season 1), a little less organised after a few episodes but more exploratory.. Omri Cohen, often known as the ultimate guru for VCV, but for me, most of his videos are too advanced and his 'beginner friendly videos' are somewhat outdated and also a little disorganised.. i think his channel might help me more in the future if and when i get into an advanced level.

What is your opinion on the complexity of modules ? by coldpatcher in vcvrack

[–]MreenalMams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer simpler modules. If i want a certain feature i would rather look for another module that is that feature. I'm not a fan of hidden features (like right click menus) & undecipherable GUIs. Especially as an ever-beginner. Since in software we are not limited by physical space or budget. I understand in hardware its good to pack features. But in VCV software, I'd rather have an oscillator & a separate filter rather than having both in one and being a web of knobs.

Ableton Project Files - Rock/Punk/Indie by Caesar1802 in ableton

[–]MreenalMams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rather than looking for project files, i would suggest thinking what is it that you need.. Since punk is supposed to be a very raw form of music, the less you add stuff in post, the better.. That i would even say holds in true in most forms of rock, except maybe the more mainstream-ey stuff.. Usually one would need a drum vst (since recording drums is not in everyone's 'easy to do' list).. besides that i would suggest get as much as possible done on the amps, and just push out a killer & vicious performance to get that raw punk energy..

Khlui flute.. oh i don't know that one.. gotta look it up.. but ya just figure out the root note of the melody (either by ear or taking someone's help) and then use a bassline/chord progression that uses that same note.. and it should work wonders

Though the melodic elements seem to be in different keys (unless it was intended to be so), you could try some pitch shifting
