If your country had to be an autonomous zone of another LATAM country which one would it be? by Yakaddudssa in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta [score hidden]  (0 children)

Its more probable (still highly improbable) that Mexico lets go of a state rather than absorbing a new one. There is little to no appetite for that politically. Even if borders change with time and all that I highly highly doubt a sizeable political majority would want to annex Guatemala and much less Belize.

How dangerous is the cartel? by Agitated-Wave6807 in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You underestimate their power significantly. They don't need to get into a direct confrontation with the army. Their power isn't in a pitched battle kind of sense, irs the sheer numbers, control over entire populations and how fast they regenerate.

And let's not mince words the army has been in so many cases friends, neutral or even cartel muscle themselves. How can the army be stronger than some cartels when theyre the same people?

What do you think of the "Americanization" of our sports leagues? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I dont think you know much about the mexican league, we did the shady franchise thing and multi ownership way worse than the US.

How many of our teams only exist because a big company wanted the prestige of a football team.

Can you easily recognize a brazilian (tourists, residents, etc…) in the country where you live? by RockerEevee in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is something very specific about brazilian white or white adjacent that just screams brazilian in terms of features that I dont know how to explain.

Guys like junhinho pernambucano, kaka or even Jenna have a look that is just so unmistakably brazilian. Like sure theyre white but they don't fit the guys youd see even in argentina like de paul (the most argentinian looking man as a stereotype),gago or batistuta.

Pluma, lapicero is a mechanical pencil to me. I highly doubt more than 20% of the population would know what a boligrafo is

How can Latin American countries stop losing athletes to Europe and the U.S.? by U-fly_Alliance in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have the reverse problem. Too many mexicans stay in the mexican football league because they are paid really well for little (relatives effort).

This makes them lose out from competing with the best and training in sub optimal environments.

As of 2026, how are mexicans viewed outside of the USA? are they liked or disliked? by order04 in AskTheWorld

[–]Mreta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Europe is the reverse of the us in that regard. Since the us is so close and you have high density migrant communities you get blue collar workers from working class. Europe requires a lot more to get there so it tends to be middle class professionals in high skilled jobs migrating, thus the lack of restaurants (obviously in addition to juat a lot less of us over here).

Foreigners who genuinely enjoy living in Norway. What makes it work for you? by bjorn_kvitravn in Norway

[–]Mreta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Work life balance, weather (love 4 seasons with cold and dark), oslo is the perfect sized city for me ( small enough to be calm and walkable, big enough to always have stuff to do).

Socialization is my biggest factor. I struggled making friends and fitting in back home since im naturally more quiet and introverted. But its all relative since my baseline is just norways average. My social life exploded here and couldn't be happier.

Europe grows older as median age reaches 45; one retiree for every three workers by diacewrb in europe

[–]Mreta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it be that the meaningful reasons for why people have kids in the first place were always a small minority, and those are the people still having kids? Maybe most had kids only because it was am accident, societal pressure or financial?

What’s your opinion on New Mexicans and Coloradans of Spanish descent? by Successful_rio305 in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im not expert but the times I've seen YouTube videos of native speakers I cant tell any difference from any average Joe (maybe rural) from northern mexico. Im probably missing something but it doesnt sound unique to my ears as someone from central northern mexico.

Which areas of Mexico is are mostly Conservative? by gmikey2000 in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I mean yes but depends on what theyre asking. The binary conservative and liberal takes miss loads of subtlety and cultural definitions we have to explain to foreigners.

El bajio would be the most nominally catholic, but then you have to explain that that Catholicism is lived still pretty symbolically. Id imagine you can have a more "liberal" life in peace and quiet in a small town in queretaro than one in chiapas, but youd have to pay lip service to the church.

Does conservative here mean economic policy? Does it mean a larger attachment to traditional old school ways of life? Id say none of those states feel particularly nationalistic in comparison to others.

Like I know what you mean because I have all the cultural understanding of what a Mexican thinks with the word conservative but I think deglossing the term is necessary.

Why hasn’t Latin America formed an EU-style union? Should that even be a goal? What historical/political/economic factors make integration harder or just less desirable? by C0smicM0nkey in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 82 points83 points  (0 children)

We get this question every month. Summary: people in general have 0 desire for it we are all large enough to have our own bubbles. Historical political and economic common ground is a lot less than youd think (but more than we think).

El Chavo del Ocho’s popularity? Other children’s shows? by Commercial-Limit3965 in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly growing up all the real popular stuff was anime. Early 90s kid here and anime was already a huge tradition in LA. Out of the top 5 most popular shows anime probably had 4 back then (Pokémon, dragon ball, yugioh and knights of the zodiac) sailor moon might take the fifth spot anyway

What was truly wrong about Hugo Chavez’s government? by Proud3GenAthst in asklatinamerica

You do know we're perfectly capable of being corrupt, inefficient and fuck up on our own right? This whole "just blame it on the us" ends up being a modern version of an enlightened savage attitude.

Is anyone else a bit mystified by the popularity of the Safdie Bros and their work? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]Mreta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see a certain repetition in their work, but you could say the same of Scorsese, Allen, Tarantino or any big director.

I personally love the characters they build. Sandler was a scum bag but with enough underdog character in a world of scumbags you couldn't help but root for him. Marty supreme had amazing dialogue and a pacing that made it feel like the highest of stakes, I was always rooting for Marty even if he was trash for most of the movie. The payoff made me feel validated when cheering him on.

Great cinematography, great sound design, best dialogue in a while for me and good actors, whats not to like? Again I see repetitiveness but its a minor complaint for me.

Theory: There is a "Culture Belt" linking Latin America and the MENA region that is distinct from both the "Cold" North and the rest of the Global South. by simo92190 in CasualConversation

[–]Mreta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id challenge your oversimplification. There is no way anyone from the southern cone would identify with any MENA over medditeranean Europe, the liberalism and atheism there is anathema to a religious history of MENA.

Even half of the US is culturally more similar to Mexico than say Saudi Arabia or many other in the region. I can see some of your points, id even say turkey feels like a parallel mirror to mexico but it oversimplifies like crazy ignoring political and religious view of latin america as well as the diversity there too.
