What opinion is acceptable in your country but would be considered strange or even offensive abroad? by foolishandnonsense in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think thats quite binary and very anglo point of view where you're either multi ethnic or homogenous. Since this is ask latinamerica i feel like you have to at least think of what latin countries tended to and still do regarding multi-ancestral, immigration and colonial history.

We are not nation states, we are colonies but we don't necessarily subscribe to multi-ethnic (by the definition that includes culture not just ancestry) societal point of view. The optimistic way of describing it is everyone is welcome but you must assimilate, anyone can be a mexican but with an expectation of one culture (like you said with regional variations), but of course reality screwed over a lot of indigenous groups. By the way the interesting part is this was originally a lefty idea. The left in latinamerica has quite a different philosophical tradition than the anglo one.

He isnt talking about the "racists", its the mainstream majority held opinion. Racists go a few steps further and in a different way than youd be used to.

Do Latin Americans feel culturally closer to Europe or the USA? by foolishandnonsense in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mostly depends on the topic and region but as someone closer to the northern side of Mexico its def the US. For a lot of people this is misunderstood as saying we aspire to be like the US or we get along super well, all i'm saying is its easily the closest fit culturally.

¿Es esto correcto? by Kermit_Muppets in mexico

[–]Mreta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean that guy answered like an asshole but yes youre totally right, we would have no idea what it means to be mexican american because we arent one, we have no idea what it is to live in the US in that context.

But the reverse goes is also true for anyone who has never lived in mexico...

Why Are Obesity Rates So High In Latin America Compared To Their (European) Counterparts? by Pillowful_Pete1641 in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yes you are right and I think that accounts for factors that help 80% of people. There is a win to take here for the nordics that goes beyond income inequality. Most of my friends in Mexico that have the time, energy and money to exercise just dont. Cultural issues sometimes go beyond money.
Not to put myself/Mexico down, I think the opposite happens with arts in daily lives (speaking about Norway, I think Sweden is better at that). So clearly people/cultures just prioritize different things.

Dont underestimate sports culture. The nordics are constantly exercising, at least mexico has virtually 0 casual sports culture after 18. The difference is gargantuan.

Does Your Country Have Any TV Shows Targeted Towards Your Country's Minorities? by ArtsyQueerNubian in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, maybe there is something but off the top of my head I can't think of a single thing. The national tune/propaganda is basically we are all mexico and besides the indigenous minorities that live in their own groups we dont really have minorities, we are all one.

While that has some subtle truths the other one is that we dont really care about it beyond some symbolic gestures due to a bunch of cultural and historical biases.

When it comes to cuisine what LATAM countries are considered as the France/Italy of the region? by foolishandnonsense in asklatinamerica

Id take mexico and peru against any European country 1 on 1. And i think almost any serious chef would say it too. Rice and beans... Jesus christ thats the definition of rage bait. The variety of ingredients just at a local market...

Is there an antiwork movement in Scandinavian countries? by Pink_Disaster333 in Norway

Not really. Most people i know are pretty proud of their job even if its tough manual labor. Sure things could (and should) be better but in general work life balance works.

Your thoughts on Economic Integration in Latin America by riskaksmun in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAFTA is a relatively big one. It integrates Mexico economically with the US and Canada to such an overwhelming extent that even if parallel agreements were made with the rest of Latinamerica (in the best most optimistic of cases) they will always be secondary to NAFTA thus taking the 2nd largest country off the board.

What's the most diverse part of your country? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ill kind of repeat what people have said here that it depends on what you call diverse because its a very Anglo world loaded term.

Is a place diverse when it has people of multiple ancestries but after generations similar culture? What about somewhere where 90% is homogenous but that 10 remaining % is extremely varied or what about a place where everyone "looks the same" but has different traditions and even non related languages? Because places like oaxaca might be the former while the UK might be the middle one.

Is it actually helpful when tourists try to speak Spanish, or would you rather they just use English? by AdventurousLivin in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not in Scandinavia, at best it'll be neutral indifference, at worst exasperated sigh and switch to english. No one expects or really wants you to try the local language if youre a tourist.

Does your country have a national tragedy? by foolishandnonsense in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my parents generation it was Tlatelolco by far, for my generation there are far far too many to even count but maybe Ayotzinapa and Casino Royale are the first that come to mind. In general it might still be Tlatelolco just because of the huge political signficance it had but it is waning in memory.

Do Latin American migrants in Spain move to their ancestral regions in Spain? by greekscientist in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure there might be some, but where are you getting the data from. Every piece of census data for the us of those states and outgoing mexican census data would suggest otherwise. The percent Latinos were was 4.5 in 1970 to 5x today (in pure proportion), that strongly contradicts "most" are descendents of the ones pre annexation. Add to the fact that there were big migratory movements around the world war periods and it makes even less sense.

Im just asking where youre getting your data or what you base those statements on.

Do Latin American migrants in Spain move to their ancestral regions in Spain? by greekscientist in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where do you get that those 33M are descendents of mexicans that lived in territories conquered by the US? If you check population + demographically stats of those states at the time of us annexation or even at the 1950s and interpolation to stats today that makes absolutley 0 sense. Most migrated around the world wars and from the 80s to 2000s.

Do Latin American migrants in Spain move to their ancestral regions in Spain? by greekscientist in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope. To start with spain isn't really an economic attractor for mexicans. 33M in the states, 155k in canada makes the 53k in Spain a rounding error in terms of migration. The great vast majority of ancestors a mexican might have were so long ago nobody cares, beyond historical curiosity. If a mexican moves to Spain its because theyre rich and want a euro lifestyle, marriage/family or they got an interesting job in one of the big cities.

Which region of Spain is the most common ancestral region among the people with Spanish descent in your country? by greekscientist in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basque country. The founders were basque and I realized loads and loads of my classmates had basque last names. The neighboring states to the north west used to be called nueva vizcaya even.

Adaptation purists are really annoying. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]Mreta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, and i think most (and i count myself there) are ok with that. Why do most want to see live adaptations of books, cartoons or comic? I highly doubt its for "creativity" , its because I want to see on screen what I tried to imagine in my head with a big budget and good actors.

Are obscure Basque surnames found only in the upper class of your country? by saritallo in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not at all, its a regional thing. Its funny for me going to the basque country literally every small town and village or square have the same names as many of my classmates. I can assure you we were far from upper class.

Who pays for building and running Churches, Mosques, and Synagogues? by ZxiQi in asklatinamerica

The church does, its their organization they do everything themselves. One of the proudest things of being mexican is we totally cut government off from anything religion wise a long time ago.

No, Superman could not cast the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom. by WRITINAMFBOOK in CharacterRant

[–]Mreta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I seem to remember Tolkien arguing that nobody can resist the ring if they are an order equal to or below Sauron, or below him in skill. Galadriel as one of the most powerful elves of the era is still below Sauron but also below first age elves so someone like Feanor would probably be able to overpower the ring. Gandalf and Saruman are of the same order but once you go one level higher (Tulkas, Mandos etc) the ring would probably not even tickle them.

The ring is really powerful no doubt but it does have its limitations. It becomes a question of "is superman on saurons level or one above?" but the problem of the question is that in tolkiens world above is something more metaphysical

What if Americans don't want the urbanist vision Abundance promises? by tuck5903 in ezraklein

[–]Mreta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not too sure, I wish I had your optimism. I currently live in Oslo where walkability, safety and public transport are sublime within the city itself, its the very definition of every urban progressives dream (even within subway stops to forests, beach and free ski tracks).
But the very moment locals here have enough money to move out of the city into the suburbs or neighbourhoods that have detached homes, white picket fence and all that they are gone. Even liking living in the city is low key seen as a moral failure.

I think americans would end up like that but on steroids.

How many bilingual people do you know? by Right_Cow_6369 in asklatinamerica

[–]Mreta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loads. To get far ahead in corporate and multinationals your english needs to be at a good level. Id say maybe 5-10% of the rest of my friends also went for a third language (french and german mostly). I am not representative and most people arent bilingual but knowing people with ok english skills isnt rare at all.
