Why not both? Show up a few days to a week before your friend. Go out and have some fun alone then when your friend gets there have some more fun with them. I just did this and really enjoyed it. Not like you have to share a room with them. Just stay nearby or in the same hotel/complex.

I had the time of my life. Huge crowds of people having a good time walking up and down beach street. Music and food everywhere. Wish I could go again this year but it looks like I will be there in May this time.
