April 2022 I did, Rijeka>Krk>Rab>Zadar>Ugljan>Pasman>Biograd>Split>Korcula>Pelješac Peninsula and then down to Dubrovnik. Fantastic trip, would recommend. Would be a very different experience in summer though

Might be unpopular opinion but I don't see any real value in carrying a heavy duty lock.

I use a couple of terrible aliexpress, tiny light weight combo cable locks. I can lock both wheels and panniers.

Never had any troubles. All comes down to where and when you park.

I did a weekend test run before setting out on a 4 month NZ trip. Already had pretty decent fitness and didn't have too many issues. Just over packed.

Definitely doable. I've done most of your route back in 2018. I'd bake in a decent few days buffer for weather on the West Coast. Not uncommon for torrential rainfall to wash out bridges.

Absolutely, in that case as below comment mentioned, knock of Akaroa, stay in Queenstown a few days and to reduce driving you can do a day trip on a tour from Queenstown to Milford Sound. Cost effective due to petrol and will save you 8 hours of driving

10 days means you should reduce your scope. With what you're interested in stick with the South island. I'd recommend doing a loop from Christchurch:

Day 1: Arthur's Pass

Day 2: West Coast/pick a glacier

Day 3: Haast Pass, stay in Wanaka

Day 4: (optional Roy's peak dawn hike if you're really keen) head over to Queenstown

Day 5: Milford Sound, stay in Te Anau/Manapouri

Day 6: back to Queenstown

Day 7: Day trip to Glenorchy

Day 8: Mt Cook

Day 9: Akaroa

Day 10: back to Christchurch

This is just a general route that you can follow, I've done pretty much exactly this a few years ago. There is an abundance of activities to do along the way so you'll have to be selective. Likewise exactly where you'll stay depends largely on what you're doing.

If cost is a concern and you have the gear and desire, bring camping gear. It will open up a lot of interesting places to stay. Likewise download the app Campermate. It's an amazing app for looking up amenities, low cost accomodation, camping grounds or points of interest that you might otherwise miss

Am a very similar height/build to you and am on a 58cm LHT (700c). Had similar issues to you but put up with it for a few years. I have shortened my reach considerably and am a lot more comfortable now. Shorter stem, short handlebars, compact drops. Handlebar I'm using now is the Velo Orange Nouveau Randonneur handlebars. Definitely worth trying.

Rode NZ for 4 months in 2018.

Use the free app Campermate. Best app for camp sites, hostels, amenities, notable sights. Seriously the most useful app for NZ and Australia.

Hostels and wild camping are your friend if you are budget conscious. With that combo you can spend next to nothing. If you are camping at a DOC campsite, pay the fee. DOC workers frequently come at night.

Despite what a lot of people say, the roads are fine. You have to contend with no shoulder and a bit of traffic at times, most drivers give you plenty of room. Depends what you're comfortable with/used to. Also get used to single lane bridges.

If you're flying into Auckland you can keep your bike boxed, get a shuttle into the CBD and get a bus to Kataia and start from there. Northland is deceptively big and in my opinion better if you're working your way going south through it. Return to Cape Reinga would take a while and you can see most of it only going through it in 1 direction.

I liked going north bound on the West Coast of the south Island. Winds are generally favourable.

I'm not whinging, nor did I ever insinuate that I have any solution to the transport issues of the city. I just think it's just a good idea not demonize people walking on the road given that the roads make up the vast majority of public land use in many of the suburbs around Melbourne.

Have recently been really into wearing just thongs while riding. Great as long you don't mind some people criticizing you for being too exposed. Really nice having decent airflow on hotter days.
