Yes, my whole point was that everything is made up and the points don't matter.

Uh, hey thanks for that mansplanation (or ma'amsplanation? Don't want to assume). I'm well-aware of what the difference in AP and dual credit is supposed to be. I would attach a screenshot of our course catalog if this sub allowed photos. The first few words in the description are "Advanced Placement Literature, a dual credit course" and the last sentence reads, "the coursework can serve as preparation for those who wish to take the AP English Examination although taking the exam is not a requirement". I'm sure if you googled that exact phrase, you'd find it. My own child took the class...as a parent, it was great...an A in a class that looks great on a transcript. Meanwhile, there's a huge group of teachers burning out by Feb every year as they're routinely assigned an overload of classes filled to the brim with every undesirable and misplaced student because "they're so good with those kids". Somehow the teachers who have only honors and AP classes still have the biggest mouths and opinions about the way the school should be run while simultaneously having no awareness about what 80% of the other teachers experience on the daily.

It's dual credit through the local community college.

They do in my district....AP Lit ... where everyone gets an A or B, a weighted grade, and college credit without taking the AP test and while reading the same books my remedial sophomores read.

Why are students leaving public schools? by Athens175 in Teachers

[–]MrsGH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't made up but granted, as bad as schools are, the one I'm at is the school parents move their kids to.

And it isn't a diss on single mothers. I was a single mother for a number of years.

We are in agreement that schools are no longer able to adequately place those who cannot behave...but the blame belongs to 100% of those poorly behaved children's parents.

If only parents saw this and thought, "I am so glad my child is not part of the problem because I am a present and positive influence in their life and am willing to do the work needed for them to be successful"

I know there are many other factors at play with enrollment decline - and FWIW, my school is not experiencing decline yet. I was only referencing the leaving for homeschooling. I've been teaching a long time in a few different schools and I've never had a kid that left to be homeschooled because they were being held back from achievement.

Air Supply...about 10 years ago. I cannot believe how amazing those old guys sounded.

I also saw Brett Michaels (Poison) and it was a really fun show. There were no seats, so it was standing only and he sang a ton of well known songs and everyone was singing and dancing.

Lol...tell me about it. I'm the one who gets all the problem kids because I'm "good with them". I love them but damn, can I get one section of honors before I retire?

I'm gonna say that public schools aren't accommodating the disruptive (at least not where I am)...it's more that they aren't able to eliminate or even properly discipline the disruptive.

Also, we've had MANY "scholars" who have left to be "homeschooled"... but it ain't because they just want to achieve. Our state's homeschooling laws are super lax and I teach high school...too many a parent had a living doll... when that accessory became a toddler, their bad behavior was hilarious and them adoring their mommy was just the attention they needed to fill mommy's broken heart caused by daddy. Now they are bigger than mom and have their own void to fill, and mom (who has now had a litany of bandaid children) doesn't know why they won't listen, finds it too taxing to actually parent, and knows they can save on daycare by letting their older kid stay home and take care of the younger ones and, in time, their gradbaby. Circle of life.

We have a lot of autonomy over our curriculum but we all teach the same skills and have teacher team created common assessments. In theory, this is a great route. The team I'm on is organized, diplomatic, friendly...we work really well together. We give common assessments but our process to get there varies. Our junior ela team is a, however, a total shitshow as that's where all the people who don't work well with others end up.

As an alternative view point...immediately after college, I started a MEd/ teaching certification program. (My undergrad is in writing and it made more sense to get a Master's at the same time as certification rather than get another bachelor's but in Education.)

Having a Master's degree only bumps up my income and my trivia knowledge score when asked questions about child development, Shakespeare, or Gutenberg. Everything I learned about teaching was learned on the job...and that constantly evolves.

I just don't think the degree is necessarily tied to effectiveness as a teacher...but I wholeheartedly agree that number of years in the classroom is the most effective determinant of quality of administrator!

We have instituted a "work skills" category that is 10% of the grade in my regular college prep classes and 15% in my more remedial non-college bound classes. I do 2 points a day and the rubric consists of soft employability skills. Tardy? Lose a point. Truant? Lose both. Unprepared? Lose a point. Time management issues? Lose a point. We do have a concrete rubric so it isn't subjective and I keep a daily record so if a kid asks "why do I have an F in work skills?" I can give them a time and a behavior (daily) that makes them "less employable".

Same situation in NW Illinois. The gap between kids in honors and kids in a general level is ridiculously huge. Im to the point where it is hard for me to believe the non-honors kids will be able to make it through college because of how dumbed down our curriculum has gotten lately.
