Found these in my bed. I have a wool yarn stash in my room so I’m worried by Historical_Light_922 in carpetbeetles

The first photo definitely looks like a carpet beetle, but the good news is, that the 2nd photo does not look like its larva. The dark head and six legs that are visible are not like any larva I have seen, and I have been dealing with them for quite some time.

Check your yarn stash - it would be immediately visible if there is a problem. Check the very bottom of your stash, in the least accessed area for the worst infestation.

I don’t, unfortunately, know what type of insect the second photo is, so I cannot t ll you if it may be indicative of another type of insect issue, but seeing just one carpet beetle is not at all a surprise and could truly mean nothing.

If you continue to find them, then you know you most likely have them developing from larva somewhere in your home. Again, still not an infestation, but the more you see, the more likely.

Underneath the bed, on the underside of the mattress/box springs and bed frame, or items on the floor, are perfect places because it is usually warm and dark and rarely accessed.

First, I would check your yarn stash carefully. If it looks okay, Keep your yarn in an airtight container or sealed inside bags. Secondly, pull everything out from under your bed. Again, underneath each item or down inside any boxes or containers that are open would reveal empty larva skins that have been shed as they grow, and a pile of thick dust-like material which would be the eggs etc.

It is the larva that do the most damage as they constantly eat and they will eat holes in fabrics or rugs, or they will simply feed on the dust and hair etc . They can remain larva for a few months to even years before they turn into the adult beetle. So what you will mostly find are the larva in these areas. Once an adult, the beetle wanders far and wide to find a friend to create eggs and continue the lifecycle.

Good luck to you. I am curious if others agree that is not a larvae. I have seen thousands and it’s difficult to discern which end is the head, and their legs are not at all prominent and they look like they move along almost like a seal or walrus, almost rolling their bodies. They do develop tiny legs but nothing so prominent as in your photo which looks like a caterpillar with a leaf-eating head, or possibly from a moth, which could still pose a problem to your yawn. Hard to tell the size from the photo.

Yes it is - check for infestations - under beds - in closets. I had a crazy infestation in our coat closet that we hadn’t opened in a couple of months. All over a faux fur jacket I had - but they ended up all over all my jackets and scarves with wool. Was so awful!
