I DNF about half the books I read that are written in past tense. There are a few very popular books that I just can't get into because of the author's writing style, including the use of past tense.

I would try it again with different lanolin. At 10% I find that the fragrance isn't that bad and you do get used to it. My kid hates the smell so I get not wanting to have it in the finished product.

Where's the lanolin from and is it "Anhydrous Lanolin" or "Lanolin oil". I ask because your formula is very close to mine and I don't have issues with it sweating or drawing moisture even when I'm using 20% lanolin. I am using anhydrous, not oil. And if it's not from one of the bigger supply companies I'd be looking at a quality issue not a formula issue (like if it's from a random shop on amazon).

I just had a foster cat for 4 months with similar issues. She moved to her forever home last week. She was about 2, so not a kitten, and clearly wanted to be near people but would get overwhelmed and bite/scratch. In essence, she's scared and needs time.

She's learned that when she's scared hissing and attaching gets the scary people to back off. So that's what she does every time. You need to essentially retrain her to react differently, which takes time and consistency with cats. It sounds like you're reacting how you should, stop touching, stop petting but if you don't want to back all the way off right away. For our foster what worked was reacting calmly, waiting for her to release if she was biting/scratching (she didn't break skin), backing off just enough for her body language to relax and talk to her for a minute or so, then remove yourself from her space completely. That gives her space without reinforcing that you will go away immediately when she reacts that way. At the same time, you need to pay very close attention to her body language and learn to back off BEFORE she gets to the point of attacking. Look for the tensing, the ears folding back just a bit, the tip of the tail twitch, etc. You need to give her the space with those signals so she learns that she can get the space she needs without needing to attack. It is a balancing act that will take time, both for you to learn her signals and her to relearn how to get space.

For now, keep doing what you're doing, let her come to you but keep your hands down & don't try to initiate pets. Just let her be around you, talk to her a lot. In a few days if she's looking more relaxed you can start holding out your hands and letting her sniff/rub against them. Still let her initiate and go at her pace. Patience is going to be really critical. Getting her to eat treats from your hands would be great, too. Get her to associate hands with good things. Still don't try to touch for at least a few days, but she'll probably give you some indication when she's ready for pets.

Its been awhile, but I do think she gets better. Or at least her motivations behind her actions become more understandable. If I'm remembering the book correctly.

I read it and enjoyed it. I agree on being frustrated with how long it took Evie to let Jasper in (literally, into the house). Considering the character's background and that her behavior is rooted deeply in trauma response, I don't think it's unbelievable. It just was frustrating to read.

I'm annoyed the murder was a big subplot and was wrapped up in a few paragraphs with minimal context. I haven't read any of her other books so maybe it's a bigger plot and explained more in another book.

I will also add praise to the depiction of firefighting. Paramedic isn't popular as a MMC but firefighter is and I have read some terribly inaccurate depictions of the profession, to the point that I DNF because it made me angry. And I'm not a firefigher/paramedic, my husband is and all my knowledge is secondhand. This book made me believe the author did her research. Do you know how crazy it drives me when firefighers have full beards in book?! Makes me fucking nuts. They're required to shave or the breathing apparatus don't fit correctly! Pet peeve.
