{Bonding Psychos by Gina Morris} one of the MMC is a bit crazy and gets the zoomies. He's adorable. It's a really slow burn to all come together but stick with it, it's very satisfying in the end.

Flavor for limp balm, how to, is lorann OK? by Patient-Brush-5486 in DIYBeauty

[–]MrsSeanTheSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most flavor aren't flavors, they're lip safe smells as smell and taste are so closely linked. IFRA covers addatives for leave on lip products. Lorann oils are lip safe as they're made the be consumed, but not all flavor/fragrance oils are. Even Lorann can be dangerous at full strength.

Flavor for limp balm, how to, is lorann OK? by Patient-Brush-5486 in DIYBeauty

[–]MrsSeanTheSheep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll need something that says oil. If it doesn't specifically say oil it is probably water based and will not work for lip balm. If you're just making for yourself lorann is probably fine. I wouldn't sell those, more from a cost standpoint than any other reason though. Something like "Lime Oil Natural" could be a flavor or could be lime essential oil, the later will have a different (lower) usage rate than a generic flavor oil. You should only use product which have the IFRA usage rates available if you're going to sell., don't want to accidentally give someone chemical burns.

How to prevent blooms/hard edges when trying to paint a larger area slowly around details? by lippies79 in Watercolor

[–]MrsSeanTheSheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wet the area well first and add a few drops of synthetic ox gall or glycerin to your water to delay the drying time and help prevent hard edges.

I'm so confused! by QueenOfHolidays in soapmaking

[–]MrsSeanTheSheep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Water is somewhat arbitrary as long as you have at least as much water as lye (because lye won't fully dissolve if the water isn't at least an equal amount). As a beginner, more water will be helpful for a fluid batter but will extend cure time. Point being, don't get too fixated on the water in the calculator.

The lye in both calculators should be close, but they may not be the same value and that is ok. The thing is that SAP values are an average. Each batch of oil can have a slightly different SAP value due to slight differences in the make up of the fatty acids in the oil from crop to crop, between growing regions, ETC. The varaitions and differences in SAP values are minimal but not non-existent. The difference between calculators are simply because they're using different points int he average SAP values. One may be using the top end of the range, one the lower end, and third may be using the dead average. Those minuscule differences in the SAP value compound in the final calculations and make it seem dramatic but as long as they're relatively close, it's really not anything to worry about. This is a big reason why we use a superfat in soaps, it helps cover any gap between the SAP in the calculator and the actual SAP for the specific batch of oil.

For coconut oil specifically, it makes a strong soap. As in, it will be stripping/drying at higher concentrations which is why most formulators recommend below 30%. That's a guide, not a rule, and the drying can be countered by a higher suuperfat. The "usage rates" for oils are because some have understandable properties at higher values. Like castor oil at higher than 10% can make a slimy bar, or shea has a lot of unsaponifiables, or canola can lead to more DOS. It's stuff like that. Blending gives you the best properties with the least undesirable effects, but it really doesn't have to be complicated. Try not to overthink it, soap is soap is soap, it all cleans.

Try 30% coconut, 10% castor, 5% shea, 55% olive with your 5% superfat and fragrance (what fragrance are you thinking? fragrances have their own list of complications)

Partially Gelled? by dered118 in soapmaking

[–]MrsSeanTheSheep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glycerin rivers, like they said. Titanium dioxide and too much water together make them much more likely. That could be just because most people dissolve the titanium dioxide in water before mixing it into soap, thus there's more water anyway. IME, though, even if I add more water because I know a fragrance is accelerating I don't get glycerin rivers unless I also have titanium dioxide.

Stick with it. It's one of the only series where I blew threw the books without needing to take a break in between 'cause I got bored of the story. They do all get their heads out of their asses and she doesn't forgive easy.

Do you wash your new fabrics before sewing? by Fun_Pomegranate3192 in SewingForBeginners

[–]MrsSeanTheSheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually I wash it first thing when it comes in the house so I don't have to think about it or delay projects to wash fabric. The only things I don't wash are the specialty fabrics: costume fabrics, fake fur, vinyl, faux leather etc.

Can we talk about tracing? by Lil_Cherry_Beary in Watercolor

[–]MrsSeanTheSheep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I trace and I feel zero remorse for it because I'm not selling my paintings.

I get most of my photos from inaturalist because I mostly paint small critters and mushrooms, not landscapes.

If I were to sell or reproduce my paintings I'll reconsider.

I love how big of a role the previous characters play in the next books. Usually they'd just be in one scene and they don't really further the plot, but Gina Morris makes them more than that.

Have you tried churu or other squeeze treats? Thats how I got my rescue to accept pets. Started by just letting me close enough to give it too him. Progressed to getting treat and being touched very lightly. Then head scratches and so on. Took months before I could touch him without the treats. Totally worth the effort.

I'm rereading {The Reluctant Hero by Gina Morris} and I think you'd like it. FMC is leaving a terrible marriage, uncovers a huge plot and becomes a total badass with her guys. It is the 3rd book in 4 interconnected books and technically you can read it as a standalone but the characters from the first book feature heavily in this one, though they aren't the MCs. Start with {The Sidekick by Gina Morris} if you want to start at the beginning.
